Synaptics enters the keyboard market, announces the ThinTouch keyboard aimed at Ultrabooks

Synaptics starts making keyboards, announces the ThinTouch keyboard aimed at Ultrabooks

More likely than not, when you think of Synaptics you think of its touchpads. Or maybe, if you’re a mobile aficionado, you know it for its touchscreens, used in phones like the HTC One X and Sony Xperia P. Now, though, the company is about to start making another kind of tactile product: keyboards. That thing you see up there is ThinTouch, a keyboard Synaptics will supply to PC makers looking for ways to make their Ultrabooks even thinner. Indeed, the keyboard is said to be up to 50 percent thinner than its competitors, and Synaptics’ big pitch to OEMs is that a thinner keyboard allows for slimmer PCs, with room for larger batteries (now that we need). The company is also promising stronger backlighting, since the keys sit close to the substrate and there aren’t rubber domes blocking the light source. Lastly, there’s a capacitive sensor underneath the keyboard, allowing the laptop’s touchpad to be disabled automatically while you’re typing. (Naturally, this works best if the trackpad is also made by Synaptics.) The company is also developing a feature in which the space bar could be a touch sensor in and of itself, with support for functions like autocomplete.

Perhaps our biggest question is how much travel these keys will have — after all, the last thing anyone needs is another shallow Ultrabook keyboard. Synaptics reps told us the company isn’t yet ready to share such technical details, though we did get to compare Synaptics’ keys with its competitors (see the image after the break). At first blush, it seemed just as flat, but not flatter, but we’ll reserve full judgement until we can use the keyboard for an extended period of time. Also no word on which PC makers will take a chance on the ThinTouch, but Synaptics says the keyboard will start shipping sometime in 2013.

Razer DeathStalker Ultimate comes with all-new Switchblade user interface

I have mentioned many times in the past before, concerning gamers who are extremely particular with their gaming peripherals. For those who are looking for a decent gaming keyboard to help them frag their way to the top, then I am quite sure that you cannot go wrong with the Razer DeathStalker Ultimate, where it is touted to come with the all new Switchblade user interface.

The Switchblade user interface found on the Razer DeathStalker Ultimate is similar to the acclaimed, customizable LCD trackpad and LED keypad combo which was first introduced on the Razer Switchblade concept a couple of years ago. Apart from that, it can currently be found in production on the Razer Blade gaming laptop, in addition to the Star Wars: The Old Republic gaming keyboard, so this is not exactly new. Let us take a closer look at the Razer DeathStalker Ultimate gaming keyboard right after the jump.

This particular interface will be able to turn gaming keyboard functionality into a customizable control panel that is accompanied by 10 dynamic, adaptive tactile keys which you are able to bind commands, macros, skills and spells in order to experience an unparalleled in-game competitive advantage. Individual keys are able to display any image thanks to Razer’s Synapse 2.0 software, allowing you to enjoy what Razer deems to be the “smartest keyboard on the market”.

As for the LCD panel that is located right below the keys, it can play nice in a couple of modes – the first setting will show off critical in-game information, ranging from damage dealt and heals-per-second on the new Star Wars: The Old Republic Battle Logger application, or countdown timers that are able to keep track of in-game events with the Razer Gamer Timer application.

As for the second mode of the panel, it will be able to function as a highly sensitive, multi-touch trackpad with intuitive gestures built-in, delivering an alternative method of navigating games or PC desktops. The list of Razer apps include Trackpad, Numpad, Macro Recorder, Gaming Mode, Browser, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Clock, Screenshot, and Game Timer amongst others. It will retail for $79.99 a pop, while those living across the pond will have to pay €79.99.

Razer DeathStalker Ultimate Keyboard has an Awesome Name. Oh and an LCD Trackpad

The LCD multi-touch trackpad on Razer’s Blade gaming laptop was just about the only truly unique thing about it. Fortunately that cutting edge device is no longer exclusive to the laptop, because Razer has incorporated it into its latest gaming keyboard.

The 4″ trackpad is available on the high end variant of the DeathStalker keyboard, the DeathStalker Ultimate. As with the Blade, the LCD can be used either to display information when you’re gaming or browsing, but it can also be used as a multi-touch trackpad. It also comes with 10 buttons with customizable icons and functions – bind commands, macros and other things that need to be bound.

There are also a variety of apps built-in for use with the trackpad, such as a macro recorder, apps for Gmail, Facebook and Twitter, and two game specific apps, one for Battlefield 3 and one for Star Wars: The Old Republic. That’s kinda sad, but I guess it’s better than nothing.  Razer has also launched a cloud service called Synapse to make it easier for users to save and sync their configurations.

As for the keyboard itself, it has anti-ghosting technology enabling up to 10 simultaneous key presses, chiclet keys with changeable backlighting, a fixed wrist rest, braided fiber cable and a name that absolutely cannot be topped. Unless Razer names its next keyboard the DeathDeader. The DeathStalker Ultimate will be available on Razer’s online store in September and will be sold for $250 (USD).

Razer DeathStalker Ultimate gaming keyboard surfaces

I’ve been a PC gamer for a long time and one of my favorite gaming keyboards was made by Razer. Razer has unveiled a new gaming keyboard called the DeathStalker Ultimate, and it’s one of the coolest keyboards I’ve ever seen. Rather than having a questionably useful number pad on the right-hand side, this thing gets a touchscreen and customizable buttons.

The keyboard features the Razer Switchblade User Interface that we first saw on the awesome Switchblade portable gaming device. The Switchblade UI allows the touchscreen and 10 buttons above the screen to have custom programmable icons. The screen can also switch modes depending on what you’re doing at a particular time.

Razer offers a special interface for Star Wars: The Old Republic that has custom keys and uses that LCD panel to show a special application for adding control to your game. That panel also functions as a multitouch track pad with support for gestures and more. There are a number of apps available for that LCD panel.

The apps include a track pad, number pad, macro recorder, gaming mode, browser, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, clock, screenshot, and a game timer. There are enough apps to let you do just about anything you want using that touchscreen. The keyboard also features anti-ghosting technology allowing you to hit up to 10 keys at once in game mode. All keys are backlit as well for gaming in the dark. The keyboard will launch in September for $249.99, and I want one.

Filthy Keyboard Transformed into Ch-Ch-Chia-Keyboard

Like to eat and drink, then use your computer keyboard without washing your hands? Eventually, you end up with a sticky, dirty mess of a keyboard. Apparently, one office worker was sick and tired of seeing the grimy keyboard in their co-worker’s office, and did something about it.

garden keyboard 1

No, they didn’t clean it up – instead, one Redditor transformed the grimy, slimy keyboard into a pocket garden, filling the already dirty bits between the keys with more dirt, and a bunch of garden cress seeds. The end result looks something like a Chia Pet, but in keyboard form. It took only a couple of days before the seeds started to sprout, and within two weeks, it was a fully-grown sprout garden.

While it’s a hilarious prank, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that the keyboard isn’t particularly functional anymore after being saddled with dirt, water and vegetation. I suggest that if you decide to try this on one of your vacationing office-mates, you try it with a crappy old keyboard nobody cares about.

SwiftKey 3.0.1 update brings Google Voice Dictation

It’s time for the 3.0.1 update to SwiftKey, one of the most in-depth 3rd party onscreen keyboards available for Android right this minute. This update takes the 3.0 update and adds several boosts to already existing features such as Smart Space – where before you were only getting spaces without tapping the space bar if you had everything spelled correctly, now there’s two-word corrections and spacing as well. This update also changes out SwiftKey’s voice recognition for the official Android Ice Cream Sandwich / Jelly Bean voice input from Google.

This update for SwiftKey 3 will be free to all those who’ve already purchased the keyboard and will be the version you pick up if you head to the Google Play app store today. SwiftKey 3.0.1 has two new themes for your keyboard including white on light blue and white on pink. The space bar has also been updated – made just a bit longer and taller here in this new update.

There are several new languages in this update including Malay and Urdu, and prediction has been upgraded as well. Prediction sees the words you’ve used in your current sentence and the sentences you’ve created in the past, learning as it goes to predict what you’re going to say. If you say the same phrases day in and day out, you’ll only have to tap your prediction row to make it all happen.

The quick punctuation key has been modified a bit to reflect the collection of characters that exist inside it as well. Those of you used to working with SwiftKey will notice the improvements instantly, while those of you who’ve used it in the past and are just coming back to it now will only see the changes once you realize how much faster you’re typing here in the present. You can find this app in the Google Play store now in both free (limited) and full editions!

Razer Deathstalker gaming keyboard announced, packs Switchblade UI LCD panels (hands-on)

Razer launches new gaming keyboard, packs Switchblade UI LCD panels

It’s pretty obvious from Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan’s one-man presentation at Gamescom that he’s buzzing about his new gaming keyboard. Ready to accompany the accessory maker’s Ouroboros gaming mouse (hands-on impressions coming very soon), the Deathstalker will arrive in Ultimate and Standard versions. They both plump for chiclet-style keys and the pricier (and larger) Ultimate felt both light and slim. The standard issue packs three backlit color options, while the bigger board adds in Razer‘s light-up Switchblade UI, seen on its first gaming laptop. The first part of this is ten LCD keys that can be customized to gaming buttons or more typical PC use. They’re still contextual, meaning if you launch the calculator from one of the keys, they will then transform into more appropriate calculator functions. Beneath that, a touchpanel LCD can act as a trackpad and accepts several gesture motions. It can also display your Twitter feed, game information and plenty more. The keyboard will also feature Synapse 2, Razer’s new cloud-based settings service. The CEO explained that a player’s custom layout and profile for the ‘board could be stored online and then accessed from any computer it’s plugged into, ready for your next (online) fight. Get our first impressions after our gallery and the break.

Mad Catz STRIKE 7 gaming keyboard announced at Gamescom handson

In the hubbub of a late evening soiree in the center of Cologne, Mad Catz unveiled its new gaming keyboard. While the S.T.R.I.K.E. 7 keyboard is certainly punctuation-rich, it’s aiming to match all those periods with just as many functions and permutations. The keyboard has a modular design, including a new touchscreen interface offering up some new swipe and gesture controls across both gaming titles and day-to-day PC use. Mad Catz reckons it’s the final piece in their gaming range puzzle, complementing both the aforementioned R.A.T. mice and its F.R.E.Q gaming headsets. We take a closer look — and throw in the suitably bombastic promo video — after the break.
