Hasta La Gadget!

Nokia and Microsoft plan to offer us the first taste of Windows Phone 8 today, refreshing the phone-maker’s Lumia line in the process. We’ve had glimpses of what we’re about to see, but we’re expecting more details on that new software at this decidedly blueish event. Join the liveblog after the break.

Greetings from Berlin! We’re kicking this year’s IFA off right with a liveblog of Sony’s press event. If last year’s event is any indication, we can expect to see a little bit of everything this morning: phones, tablets, TVs and HD eye goggle thingies, amongst others. The announcements are sure to be fast and furious today, so grab a comfortable seat and stay tuned!

You might be thinking, “it’s too early to be talking about CES,” and we wish you were right, but you’re not. January’s consumer electronics extravaganza is inching closer, plans are already being laid and Samsung President Stephen Woo is filling in appointments in his calendar. The most important of those will be his keynote that’s set to kick off day two of the festivities in Vegas. The talk will largely focus on the little things, and we don’t mean unimportant things, we mean components. All those tiny slivers of silicon that make your gadgets go are really what is pushing the industry forward and Samsung is a major player — pumping out processors, memory, SIMs and camera sensors. The former Bell Labs and Texas Instruments employee will bring his 20-plus years of experience to bear on a vision of the future, presumably powered by Sammy’s chips. Will he also unveils something new… perhaps a next gen smartphone CPU? We’ll just have to wait and see. Guess it’s time to start booking those flights.

Among the premature Google Play leaks this morning is a line about a purchase bonus, to ship alongside each Nexus 7 tablet. As a temporary incentive, Mountain View is offering customers a $25 credit to spend on Play store content, along with additional content, including a copy of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. We’re just minutes away from the start of Google’s I/O conference keynote, where we expect to hear full details about the tablet and bonus cash, along with a handful of other devices, such as the Nexus Q.
