MagSkin Lets You Stick Your iDevice on Your Fridge, and Then Some

It’s early morning. You’re running around, grabbing your stuff and throwing everything in your bag, and just as you’re about to leave, you double back inside to grab your iPhone from the kitchen table – only it’s not there. So you waste another ten minutes or so trying to find your phone before finally rushing out of your apartment. Sound familiar?

Well, here’s one solution for you: the MagSkin magnetic skin for your iPhone. It’s a thin decorative skin that “magnetizes” your iPhone so you can just stick it on your fridge when you’re not using it. That way, it’s always going to be there for you to just grab when you need to go.

MagSkin

The MagSkin is actually a Kickstarter project by Daniel Weyer in a bid to de-clutter his counter from all the wires and devices he and his wife had. If you have a couple of smartphones and music players, then the MagSkin can probably work on them, too, so you can stick everything onto your refrigerator.

The fact that they’re available in a wide range of colors, some shade shifting and thermo-sensitive, doesn’t hurt on the stylish end either.

A minimum pledge of $12(USD) will get you one of your very own MagSkins over on Kickstarter. Aside from that, you’ll also be getting two MagDocks, which are magnetic backings that will convert any surface into a docking area for the MagSkin-wearing device.

Knut can monitor just about anything

One of the things I like so much about Kickstarter is that you never know what kind of project will turn up. One of the most recent projects that caught my eye is the device called the Knut. This is a small battery-powered Wi-Fi enabled device that you can use for monitoring just about anything you can think of. It can be used to monitor environmental conditions in your home such as the temperature of various things and humidity.

It can also be used to monitor when something is open or closed such as a gun cabinet or liquor cabinet. The Knut is also able to monitor vibration and can be placed inside a box with something sensitive or fragile you might be shipping to monitor if the package is being treated appropriately. You can even use it to remind you to water plants.

The device is controlled by an app that would run on the smart phone or computer and receive the data the Wi-Fi enabled sensor spits out. The device will also e-mail the information to a specific e-mail address so you can check it without bothering with your phone. The user can control how frequently Knut checks sensors, with some sensors such as accelerometers and switches checked anytime they change. This project is seeking $25,000 and has so far racked up $39,834 with seven days to go before funding. It will cost you $80 or more to get one Knut sensor during the Kickstarter project. Delivery is estimated for September.

Insert Coin: LUMOback Smart Posture Sensor thrums when you slouch, charts your laziness (video)

insert-coin-lumoback-smart-posture-sensor

LUMOback wants to show all those DIY posture dilitantes what’s what with its Smart Posture Sensor, an app and hardware combo that tracks your carriage and vibrates when you hunch. The thinnish 8.5mm sensor is worn like a belt, and on top of the tactile nagging, it provides detailed iPhone or iPad charting of the sitting, running and even sleeping you did, complete with an xkcd-like stickman video replaying all your crooked moves. So far the team is about a third of the way to its $100K mark, and a minimum $99 pledge will get you a jet-black model if it’s built, with a $125 chip-in letting you vote on a a second shipping color, to boot. If some of your activities consist of, say, blogging in front of a computer screen all day, check the video after the break for relief.

Yep, Kickstarter Is Pretty Much a Scam for Useless Crap [Watch This]

The Onion, as only The Onion can, exposed the cesspool of faux-inventions of Kickstarter by calling the folks who start Kickstarter projects, Internet criminals who “bilk friends and families out of terrible, ill-conceived and unnecessary personal projects”. Yep, pretty much. More »

You can even order it with an additional Gorilla Glass lens to further protect your phone, while still allowing you to use the touchscreen. The headphone jack is made out of aircraft-grade anodized aluminum that snaps up to offer rapid access to the port. There is a dedicated lever to open it quickly as well. They also will be offering an optional bike mount for the case, which is a great idea.

The project is being launched through Kickstarter, and was completely funded within a couple of days. They have already amassed over $200,000, with a goal of $150,000, so it definitely will be produced. The TAKTIK case starts at $75(USD) and goes up to $250 for a ‘Future-Proof’ version that ships with one case for your iPhone 4/4S and one for the upcoming iPhone 5.

The Knut Is A Web-Enabled Monitor For Everything

knut_sensors

If you’re headed away this summer, leave the Knut behind to keep and eye on things. This small, Wi-Fi-capable widget can transmit various measurements to your iPhone anywhere in the world.

The Knut is a Kickstarter project by Richard Pasek and Jay Gondelman in Boston. They’re looking for $80 per Knut and it has various sensors built in as well as functional sensors for various other measurements.

Knut has a high accuracy temperature sensor and a battery level sensor built in. If you want to monitor more than just temperature, you can connect an external sensor or multiple sensors using the 3-port hub. Currently we have functional humidity, vibration, door, water proof temperature, and water presence sensors.

They’ve surpassed their $25,000 goal so these things will definitely ship. The real questions is how people will use this to monitor their basements, humidors, and elephant paddocks.

Tablift Lets You Use Your iPad in Bed, Effortlessly

I used my iPad last night in bed and woke up with a pretty stiff neck. In fact, it was stiff for the most part of my day, which gave way to a rotten mood and a ruined day. I get similar aches from using the tablet when I’m sitting down or in a reclined position. So when I saw the Tablift up on Kickstarter, well, let me just say that I thought it was a godsend.

TabliftTablift is an accessory that will make it easy for anyone with an iPad to use it while they’re lying down in bed or chilling on their couches. It’s basically a sturdy stand with super long, bendy legs that can be adjusted independently, so you can use it in virtually any position.

At first glance, the Tablift looks like a bulky accessory, but the cool thing is that it folds down entirely, so you can stow it away and take it with you wherever you might use your iPad.

If you’re interested, you can head on over to Tablift’s Kickstarter page to learn all about it and maybe even back the project. A minimum pledge of $60(USD) will get you one Tablift if the project’s target of $78,000 is raised by July 12th.
