Jelly Bean update for AT&T’s Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket now available

Jelly Bean update for AT&T's Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket now available

We’ve witnessed AT&T deliver a very fresh Android experience to a number of Samsung’s galactic handsets in the past few months, but we definitely won’t complain when others get the same treatment — even if it is slightly overdue. Available now via Kies, this Jelly Bean upgrade will give Galaxy S II Skyrocket owners what will likely be a much welcomed boost, including new features such as Smart Stay, Direct Call and Pop Up Play. Of course, the aforementioned tidbits are only part of the bigger Mountain View picture, since the new version means automatic access to Google Now and overall under-the-hood enhancements thanks to things like Project Butter. It’s here, it’s real, and it’s ready to rejuvenate your device — all you have to do is pay our source link a visit, where you’ll find specific instructions on how to get the goods.

Samsung will update US Galaxy S III devices to Jelly Bean ‘in the coming months’

Samsung commits to rolling out Jelly Bean to USbased Galaxy S III devices in the 'coming months'

The about screen on your US Samsung Galaxy S III may look a lot like the one above in the near future (albeit in English). Samsung has officially announced its intention to make an upgrade to Jelly Bean available to stateside versions of the company’s flagship, though it left out one very important detail: the actual date. Instead, all we know at this point is that an upgrade to Android 4.1 will be offered OTA and via Kies sometime in the coming months. Why so vague? It’s likely because Samsung is now at the mercy of each individual carrier to finish testing the new version of Android on the GS3 before unleashing it to the public. The refresh will deliver some TouchWiz-based enhancements like Blocking Mode, Easy Mode and a few new camera settings, as well as the usual suite of Jelly Bean improvements like Google Now and expandable notifications. Head below to check out the press release, which offers a more detailed list of what to expect.

Samsung KIES updated, receives new user interface

It seems that the good people over at Samsung has decided to introduce a new update to their KIES program, where upon a successful download and installation process, it would bump up your Samsung KIES version to 2.5.0.12094_27. Yes, I know that it is not exactly the easier number to remember at this point in time, making nicknames a whole lot easier to carry in one’s mind, but that’s the way things are done in the software world for some time already, and the trend looks set to continue well into the future.

The release date of this version is October 4th (today, of course), and it really looks totally fresh compared to its predecessor. Word has it that Samsung has plans for more changes (for the better) down the road, but none of these have been divulged just yet. Perhaps a leak is in order, anyone? For those who have already given the Samsung KIES update a download and gone through the installation process, how do you find it?

AT&T upgrades Samsung Captivate Glide to Android 4.0, keeps the QWERTY habit going

AT&T upgrades Samsung Captivate Glide to Android 40, keeps the QWERTY habit going

Hardware keyboard fans must feel like they’re part of an endangered species — there’s greater uncertainty these days about software updates, let alone new smartphones. If you’re part of that persecuted group, AT&T and Samsung have your back: they’ve just started rolling out Android 4.0 for the Captivate Glide. All of the features will be familiar if you’ve borrowed someone’s Galaxy S II in the past few months, although it’s hard to object to the better multitasking and support for Chrome. About the only catch is the need to use Kies to grab the update, but that’s a small sacrifice we’re sure many are willing to make.

Samsung Kies software could potentially leave Samsung phones vulnerable

If you’re using a Samsung Android phone, chances are you use the Kies software that comes bundled with it to update your phone, perform file transfers, sync, and all that. However it has been recently discovered on a blog that despite the Kies’ seemingly innocent and straightforward nature, it did have the potential to allow malicious applications to be installed on the user’s device. An app downloaded from the Google Play store could in theory hijack the “install_packages” permission within the Kies software and could then proceed to install more apps without the user’s knowledge or permission! This exploit can be seen demonstrated in the video above for those who are curious. The good news is that this vulnerability isn’t that big of a deal since apparently it can be patched with a simple OTA update, so hopefully Samsung and other manufacturers who rely on custom UIs will be looking into this issue ASAP!

AT&T Samsung Skyrocket updated to ICS

The Galaxy Note isn’t the only device on AT&T getting the precious upgrade to Android 4.0 today, as the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket is jumping on the bandwagon. ICS officially available for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II beginning tomorrow

ICS now officially available for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II

While it’s true a few lucky AT&T Galaxy S II owners were able to get their hands on the official upgrade to Android 4.0 just a matter of days ago, the company wasn’t ready to push it out to the masses quite just yet. The initial tests must’ve gone as well as hoped, however, because AT&T will be ready to make ICS publicly available tomorrow to anyone willing to go through Kies to grab it. Indeed, the one drawback to this wonderful news is the fact that ICS doesn’t just come to you… you need to go to it. As in, no over-the-air capabilities. The silver lining to that, though, is that this may actually work out better for anyone that feels better off sticking with the tried-and-true Gingerbread TouchWiz experience. On a sidenote, AT&T also reaffirmed its commitment to bringing the next version of Android to more devices this summer, but refused to specify which ones we can look forward to. Head below (or check out the source link) to learn how to grab the update.
