Amazon Rumor Roundup: Faster And Cheaper Kindle Fire, Kindle Touch With Better Screen And Maybe A Phone

Kindle Family

Amazon is a company that just cannot stop leaking information about its new products. Before the live coverage of Amazon’s press conference on TechCrunch at 10:30 in Santa Monica, it is now a good time to write down what we know about Amazon’s lineup.

New Kindle devices are highly expected and the major focus of the conference should be on hardware. The Nexus 7 has proven to be a beautifully-designed cheap 7-inch tablet and an update to the Kindle Fire would be a welcomed announcement. The Kindle Touch has lost its edge in the e-reader landscape with the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight. Moreover the Pearl E Ink screen has not been updated since 2010. Lastly, there are some rumors that Amazon might finally be ready to release a Kindle-branded phone.

Kindle Fire

Even though Amazon claims that the Kindle Fire is now sold out, what it really means is that Amazon stopped production of the current Kindle Fire — a device cannot be sold out because it is the company that decides to stop production. Seeing how Amazon is desperate for attention, a new Kindle Fire is therefore very likely.

Some pictures of the device leaked. It still sports a 7-inch display with a narrower matte bezel and maybe a front-facing camera on some models. Amazon could choose to only offer the camera on the higher-end model to keep the entry price very low.

A 10-inch device could be introduced as well but we are much less confident about this rumor as the price has always been an important selling point for Amazon over the years. And of course it would put that purported tablet in direct confrontation with the iPad.

Talking about prices, in order to keep its edge in the race to the bottom, Amazon may adopt a similar strategy as its ereader strategy. In other words, Amazon may lower the price by showing ads — also known as special offers — when you turn on the device. A $149 device sure looks attractive when it is just a click away to add to your virtual cart.

Engadget received some logs that could indicate that the new Kindle Fire operating system will be based on Android 4.0.3 instead of 2.2 — a much needed improvement for third-party developers and even users. A bump in specs would be logical as well, with for example an improved processor and a screen with a better resolution.

And then there is the Firedock. Amazon trademarked the brand, probably for an accessory. Will it be unveiled today?

Kindle Touch

While we are not sure about the entry-level Kindle, the Kindle Touch is likely to receive an update. It is currently unavailable on Amazon.com. It did not receive the same PR treatment as the Kindle Fire, but the Kindle Touch is in need of an update as well.

Yesterday, the new Kindle Touch was teased by Amazon in an ad. The home button is gone and the bezel is now black.

Competitors such as the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight or the just-announced Kobo Glo have a screen that glows in the dark. Contrarily to what it looks like, those devices are front-lit and not backlit. It uses small LEDs in the bezel to project light on a transparent film. The Kindle Touch should probably use the same technology due to the characteristics of E Ink screens.

Another improvement would be a new E Ink screen. The current Pearl screen has been used in Kindle e-readers since 2010. The company E Ink stated that a generation is supposed to last two years. Screen contrast between the text and the background should be improved as well as screen refresh rate for faster page turns — it depends on the processor too. But the more important improvement would be a bump in resolution. The Kindle has had the same 800×600 resolution since 2007. The Kobo Glo has a 1024×768 six-inch screen. Maybe it will be the same resolution for the Kindle Touch, maybe not.

Kindle smartphone?

Over the past few days, some rumors of a Kindle-branded smartphone have emerged. It is probably the next logical step for Amazon after hyping up its App Store so much. Bloomberg has come to that conclusion after hearing rumors from Foxconn and the hire of Matt Gordon, a specialist in patent protection to avoid lawsuits.

It is unclear whether the smartphone will be unveiled today. The rumors come very late. Moreover, specs and design remain unknown. It would be an interesting turn for Amazon, even if it is only released in a few weeks. With its incredible retail presence thanks to the ubiquitous Amazon.com, the device could sell well and prove to be yet another challenger in the smartphone landscape.

Amazon’s new Kindles are almost here (and lateness doesn’t matter)

The clock is ticking, and Amazon is building up to wow us at its Kindle event in just a few hours time. Expectations are high, and yet Amazon is – unusually for the company – playing catch-up, in hardware if not market share. Barnes & Noble pipped it to the post with the backlit NOOK Simple Touch with GLowLight, and – if the phone chatter is true – it trails Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Nexus and other big names to the smartphone segment.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s early advantage in the tablet market, with the low-cost Kindle Fire, has been eclipsed by Google’s own Nexus 7. The pure Android experience – and Jelly Bean at that – for $199 has left Amazon’s heavily customized version looking underwhelming.

What Amazon has, though, is an ecosystem to play with, something all but Apple have struggled to achieve. The Kindle and Kindle Fire may not have the very latest hardware (in the forms we know them now, anyway), but they do tie into Amazon’s raison d’être: selling you (or renting you) content. That’s the reason Amazon opts for a hugely tweaked version of Android, because it funnels you directly to the company’s own storefront.

Google borrowed a little of that strategy with the Nexus 7, emphasizing the Play store for multimedia as well as apps on the 7-inch tablet, but it still lacks the eagle-focus of Amazon’s platform. The retailer’s approach works equally well on tablets as ereaders as phones, and it’s no surprise that all three are expected today.

Slick hardware is eye-catching on day one, but it’s insufficient on its own to guarantee longer term success. The Kindle Fire wasn’t the best cheap tablet even when it first launched, but Amazon’s portfolio of software and services buoyed the user experience to the point where criticisms of missing webcams seemed beside the point.

Amazon can afford to come late with its polished Kindle Paperwhite (tipped to have a backlight to take on the NOOK, as well as a cleaner, more paper-like E Ink display) and even the Kindle smartphone could carve itself a market, thanks to the retailer’s huge brand-recognition and the potential for subsidized pricing and media offers.

There’s not long to wait to find out, so join us in a few hours time for all our coverage of the Amazon Kindle launch event!

New Kindles caught on camera in NFL sneak peak

Amazon has revealed a sneak early view of its new Kindles, dropping a pair of new ereader/tablets into its NFL season kickoff advert. The commercial, which you can see after the cut, gave a few brief glances of the new models expected to launch officially on Thursday, though exact details were in short supply.

According to previous rumors, Amazon has two new Kindles to bring to Thursday’s launch. Although the commercial is too brief to give anything but a quick glance at the new hardware, they look to be thinner than the existing Kindle Fire and at least one is full video capable with a color display.

The second model, however, is expected to use an E Ink display, and be called the Kindle Paperwhite. Previous whispers have indicated it will be an upgrade to the existing Kindle Touch, and deliver a far more paper-like reading experience as well as having a touchscreen interface.

However, there’s no sign of the Amazon Kindle Smartphone that has apparently been “confirmed” by some for an official debut at the Thursday event as well. SlashGear will be at the launch – which kicks off at 10:30AM PT – so join us for all the details as they’re announced!

Amazon Might Have Just Leaked the New Kindle and Kindle Fire in a Commercial [Video]

Amazon’s big gala is tomorrow and we’re expecting a lot of new products: a Kindle Fire, new Kindles with frontlit displays and maybe even a surprise phone. You can see two of ’em right now. During tonight’s Giants vs Cowboys NFL game on NBC, Amazon unveiled a brand new commercial that also shows off never before seen devices. Devices which are very probably the new Kindle and possibly the new Kindle Fire. More »

Did Amazon just tease football fans with new Kindle devices?

Watching tonight’s Cowboys / Giants game? We hope you stuck around for the commercials, because Amazon may have given NFL fans a glimpse of what’s to come during tomorrow’s event. According to folks watching the game, the firm ran a brief commercial featuring what appears to be a pair of Kindle devices, which comfortably fit previous reports that two new versions will be landing soon. One of the devices packs a touchscreen in a black finish, and looks distinct from hardware in the company’s current lineup. At any rate, you can catch the minute-long TV spot after the break or wait until the firm’s press conference tomorrow for concrete details.

Amazon smartphone reportedly in the works, possible reveal tomorrow

As many of you already know, Amazon is planning to hold a press event tomorrow. We’ll be there, and we’re expecting Amazon to reveal at least a new Kindle Fire. Rumors are saying that there may be more than that – a “Paperwhite” Kindle eReader, for instance, or even a second Kindle Fire reveal. The idea that Amazon will reveal two different Kindle Fire tablets tomorrow is already pretty crazy, but here’s one that seems even crazier: Amazon might be planning to announce a new smartphone tomorrow.

Yes, you heard that right – The Verge reports that Amazon has a smartphone of its own in the works, and it might announce the device during tomorrow’s press event. The Verge’s sources “confirmed” that such a smartphone exists, and said that it will come running a modified version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Apparently, it will support Nokia Maps instead of Google Maps, which seems to jibe with Nokia’s announcement earlier today that it will soon be adding a major Nokia Maps partner. Very interesting indeed.

There aren’t too many other details at the moment, as these sources say that the phone is incomplete. Why would Amazon want to announce the phone tomorrow then? Nokia and Motorola both announced a new round of phones today, HTC has an event coming up later on in the month, and the iPhone 5 looks set for reveal on September 12. If Amazon was planning to announce a smartphone of its own, it would probably want to keep up with its competitors, which might be why we’ll get an announcement tomorrow.

If Amazon is truly planning to enter the smartphone business, this is pretty big news. With the current rumors telling us that Amazon may be planning a new, beefed up Kindle Fire that can challenge the likes of the Nexus 7, it becomes easier to believe that the company is also plotting a smartphone reveal. Stay tuned, because we’ll have the information you need tomorrow, straight from Amazon’s press event.
