Best Buy takes 2012 Amazon Kindle pre-orders for those that hate online shopping, appreciate irony

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 impressions

There’s a certain amount of self-contradiction going on if you’re visiting a brick-and-mortar store to pre-order a device that’s all about e-commerce. If you relish the irony, Best Buy will gladly let you reserve Amazon’s $69 Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, upgraded Kindle Fire and both sizes of the Kindle Fire HD (including the LTE model) at both regular locations and Best Buy Mobile. The retailer isn’t as specific with its in-stock dates as Amazon: beyond the $69 Kindle’s September 14th date, we’re only promised a generic October release for the Paperwhite and 7-inch Kindle Fires, while the 8.9-inch tablets will be available “before Christmas.” Not the quickest path to getting a new Kindle in your hands, then, but it may be the best way to get a hands-on before clinching the deal.

Amazon Kindle press event round-up

All right, so there was no Kindle smartphone announcement after all, but now that the dust at the Amazon Kindle press event has settled, what’s hot and potentially not? Let us give you a quick summary here so that you can shimmy off to the link of your choice later.

As many had expected, the Kindle Paperwhite was announced, delivering a new frontlit display that is easier on your eyes, not to mention a phenomenal battery life that ought to offer forgetful folks a brief respite from constantly charging their devices.

The Kindle Fire HD has been made official as well, where you will be able to choose from 7″ and 8.9″ screen sizes. These will come with 16GB of internal memory right out of the box, with the main differentiating feature compared to its rivals being the inclusion of dual antenna, playing nice with 2.4GHz and 5GHz spectrums. Amazon claims this allows you to theoretically experience superior data transfer speeds over a Wi-Fi connection.

The cream of the crop in terms of announcements would be the Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE (what a mouthful!), where it retails for $499 a pop and comes with an annual data plan of just $49.99, looking squarely into the new iPad’s eyes. It does seem to shape up to be the new standard in 32GB tablets, but time will tell whether the Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE can catch on.

Oh yeah, lest we forget, the vanilla Kindle Fire was also given a minor hardware update, where Amazon threw in a faster processor that naturally boosted its speed, not to mention having double the amount of RAM also helps in making the entire user experience easier.

So, which of the new Kindles announced tickled your fancy? Are you disappointed, or did everything fall within your expectations? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.

Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE at $499

Amazon has had a pretty good run with their Kindle Fire tablets, and this morning, the Kindle Fire HD certainly had us sit up and take notice – but when you offer Amazon $499 in exchange for a tablet, what can they give you in return? How about the Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE for starters? Amazon has called it the “ultimate tablet feature” for the built-in 4G LTE connectivity, sporting 32GB of storage space as well as dual antenna 4G for all 10 bands, now how about that?

Not only that, having 4G LTE radio on your Kindle Fire HD device is of no use if there is no corresponding data plan to keep it company. This is the reason why Amazon also announced a new 4G LTE package which costs $49.99 annually, where in return, you will get $10 Amazon Appstore credit, 20GB of cloud storage, 250MB of data each month, all coasting along to 4G LTE speeds.

You can see that Amazon intends the Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE to go up against the iPad 3 here in this $499 price segment, and they have broken down the total ownership cost for a year (data included) to $549 as opposed to the iPad 3′s $959 price point. If you have $499 to spare, why not place a pre-order for the Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE today and have it ship on November 20th to your doorstep? Do you think the iPad 3 is in trouble, or will the pull of Apple’s brand name still be too hard for common sense to resist?

Amazon announces $499 Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE on AT&T

More tablets with more ways to connect! Jeff Bezos has just announced another flavor of the Kindle Fire HD, this one offering connectivity to AT&T’s 4G LTE network. It’s the 8.9-inch model, meaning you’re paying a $200 premium for that LTE antenna. But, Amazon has paired that with an absolutely killer data deal. For $50 a year you’ll get 250MB monthly. AT&T’s current data plans would have you paying $14.99 monthly for that much data. If we were a mathematician we’d say that’s a savings of 129.88 a year. But, since we’re not, we’ll just say that sounds like good value to us. The Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE will be available for pre-order today, shipping on November 20th.
