Leaked Kindle Fire render lends credence to incoming refresh

Leaked Kindle Fire render lends credence to incoming refresh

The case for an incoming Kindle Fire update seems to be getting stronger every day — not only have we seen benchmarks and alleged photos of the device, but now @evleaks seems to have come across an official render. The purported press image matches previous leaks in bezel size and design, but lacks the front-facing camera Amazon introduced with the Kindle Fire HD. This leads us to suspect that the render is of a non-HD model of Bezos’ latest tablet. The flagship model is rumored to have a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution, the aforementioned camera upfront and an OS based on Android 4.2.2. We’re still waiting for Amazon to give the official word of course, but for Kindle users waiting for an upgrade, it’s something to salivate over.

Benchmarks hint at Snapdragon-based Kindle Fire HD with 2,560 x 1,600 display

Benchmarks hint at Snapdragon-based Kindle Fire HD with 2,560 x 1,600 display

While benchmark leaks can be wobbly info-stones to tread upon, the arrival of some purported Kindle Fire HD scores could be the first steps toward a timely refresh. The results in question refer to a “Amazon KFAPWA” device with a reported Adreno 330 GPU, which by implication would likely mean a Snapdragon 800 SoC. The field that really leaps out, however, is that 2,560 x 1,600 resolution. If true, it could mean the 8.9-inch version is getting a bump from the previous iteration’s 1,920 x 1,200 display. This certainly chimes with earlier reports, and, if nothing else, would certainly make that new browser UI all the more pretty to look at.

Amazon’s bringing its Kindle Fire HD 7, 8.9 to India on June 27th

Amazon's bringing its Kindle Fire HD 7, 89 to India on June 27th

Having recently rebranded its operations in India under the Amazon name, the retailer announced today that it’s launching the Kindle Fire HD 7 and 8.9 there later this month. Due on June 27th, the two tablets will ship for 15,999 ($275) and 21,999 ($380) rupees with access to a reported 1.9 million-plus apps, games and books. The company opened its Kindle store locally last year, accessible via the older Kindle device sold at retailer Croma, as well as Kindle Paperwhites currently listed on the Amazon India store. The Kindle Fire will also be sold through “over one hundred” brick and mortar stores in India, with a list available on the Amazon website. There will also be locally-sourced content available with tablet-optimized apps for Indian video services like Big Flicks, Chhota Bheem and more, plus e-book prices that are promised to be the lowest in the country.

Kindle Fire HD 7 and 8.9 now available for pre-order in ‘over 170 countries’ (update: Appstore open in ‘nearly 200’)

Kindle Fire HD 7 and 89 now available for preorder in 'over 170 countries'

Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 7- and 8.9-inch slates have only seen limited shores since they were formally announced, but today the company said they’re now available for pre-order in more than “170 countries and territories around the world.” We could try and list all the new tablet markets, but it’s easier to say that until now, they’ve only found spots in Amazon stores in the US, Europe and Japan. We’re not surprised to see the hardware get a much wider release, given that the e-tailer revealed its plan to take the Appstore global last month. The only other nugget in the PR is an expected shipping date of June 13th. Head over to your local Amazon portal to confirm if your region is one of the lucky 170.

Update: Amazon’s issued a second PR saying those international plans for the Appstore are no longer plans — it’s now up and running in “nearly 200 countries.”

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 LTE hits AT&T retail on April 5th with a $249 contract option

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 89 with LTE reaching AT&T retail stores April 5th

Have you eyed the LTE version of Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 8.9, yet remained skittish about buying such a relatively expensive tablet sight-unseen? AT&T is now willing to accommodate you: stop by an AT&T retail store from April 5th onward and you can pick up a 32GB model in person. The carrier is also offering an alternative purchase model. The $399 contract-free purchase is still available for those who want their freedom, but the initial price can drop to $249 for anyone willing to sign a two-year contract for a data plan. While either is still a lot of money to throw at Amazon’s ecosystem, it’s good to know that we can at least minimize the qualms surrounding an impulse purchase.

Kindle Fire HD 8.9 launched in Europe and Japan, gets permanent price cut in the USA

Kindle Fire HD 8.9 launched in Europe and Japan, gets permanent price cut in the USA

Amazon today launched its largest slate, the Kindle Fire HD 8.9, in Europe (the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, to be exact) and Japan, where it’s been up for pre-order since late last month. That’s not all, though, as Amazon says having to make more 8.9-inch tabs for those markets has cut production costs, and the savings are being passed on to US customers in the form of a price cut. This isn’t one of the time-sensitive offers Amazon has a habit of pulling, so from today onwards, you’ll be able to pick up a WiFi-only 16GB model for $269, or the 4G option with 32 gigs of storage for $399. The higher capacity models — 32GB WiFi-only and 64GB with 4G — now tally up at $299 and $499, respectively.

Amazon discounts 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD models as part of Valentine’s Day promo

Amazon discounts 89inch Kindle Fire HD models as part of Valentine's Day deals

Amazon clearly doesn’t have a problem with slashing the prices of its 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD from time to time. As such, don’t color us surprised after the mega online retailer announced that it’s kicking off Valentine’s Day festivities by offering up to a $50 discount on the 8.9-inch Fire HDs. For starters, the WiFi-only slate is set to be up for grabs starting at a decent $269 for the 16GB model, while the higher-end, LTE-equipped Kindle will be tagged at a pricier $449 (with 32GB of built-in storage), which isn’t too bad an offer when compared to the usual entry prices of $299 and $499, respectively. The Amazon deals run from today through February 8th, so there’s still a little time to find out if your significant other would enjoy one of these — or, if all else fails, perhaps you could just add some Fire to your personal gadget collection.

Engadget’s tablet buyer’s guide: winter 2013 edition

DNP Engadget's tablet buyer's guide winter 2013 edition

As we begin 2013, we’re stuck in a kind of tablet limbo. Most companies rushed to get devices out for the fall, while the models we saw at CES 2013 aren’t yet shipping. As such, it’s a mostly familiar deck, with Apple, Google and Microsoft once again striving for the top spot. That said, there are new entries from Amazon and ASUS, and many of us who didn’t score some sweet loot this holiday season have a slate-sized pile of cash to spend. If you’re in that situation, continue on for our first tablet guide of 2013.

Note: If you’re looking for tablets with an Atom or Core i5 CPU, you’ll find those in our forthcoming laptop buyer’s guide, since they have the same guts as notebooks (or netbooks, in some cases). For the purposes of this tablet guide, we define tablets as slate-type devices with low-power ARM processors.

Amazon slashes $50 off Kindle Fire HD 8.9 models during January, but only for students

Image

While many of us are still recovering from New Year’s celebrations, Amazon is considerably clearer-headed: it wants us ready for the winter school term that’s about to start. Appropriately, it’s offering a surprisingly steep discount on the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 for students. Americans headed back to class can get $50 off the price of the larger tablet for the whole of January, regardless of the capacity or the presence of LTE. The catch, apart from needing a .edu email address for the Amazon Student program, is the requirement for an active Prime subscription — although that’s no great shakes when Amazon accepts both the free six-month offer and the $39 yearly student plan. At $249, the discounted Kindle Fire HD is tempting for anyone who can do their course shopping at the Kindle Store… or just wants a convenient distraction during mid-terms.

WatchESPN sports streaming reaches Amazon Kindle Fire tablets

WatchESPN sports streaming reaches Amazon Kindle Fire tablets

Although WatchESPN viewing has been an option for Android viewers since 2011, those with Amazon tablets haven’t had the same luxury — they’ve sometimes had to watch on an old-fashioned TV. Thankfully, ESPN is giving them a better start to the new year by bringing its app to the Amazon Appstore. Anyone with a regular Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD or Kindle Fire HD 8.9 now has access to live games and news as long as they have a supporting TV subscription. The app is free outside of the cost of ESPN itself; if you’ve got the right mix of hardware and software, it’s easy to get your fill at the source link.
