If you find yourself with a serious hankering for a tablet able to run the same software as your computer at home or work, you’re probably going to need to invest in a Windows 8 tablet. Gadget importer Dynamism has announced the availability of an interesting new Windows 8 tablet called the Kupa UltraNote X15.

Bet you never heard of them either. The Kupa tablet is built in China, but was designed in Germany. It has a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 resolution IPS screen with an active digitizer and supports 10 points of multitouch. The screen supports up to 1024 different levels of pressure making this an interesting option for digital artists.

The tablet uses an Intel Ivy Bridge i5 or i7 processor promising desktop-like performance, and ships with 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. The tablet also has a sideloading battery allowing it to be easily swapped for exta runtime. Down the road, Kupa plans to release add-on modules which plug into the sides of the tablet, extending functionality with things like a card reader or projector. Certain models of the tablet are also compatible with 3G service and the device has an optional dock.

The Kupa UltraNote X15 is available now, with prices starting at $1099(USD). The 3G models range from $1299 to $1599.

KUPA Ultranote X15 puts Windows 8 Pro tablets on notice

This week the folks at Dynamism are presenting a beast of a tablet by the name of KUPA Ultranote X15, made to bring beastly specifications to a space that’s not quite up to speed yet with future-ready Windows 8 UI. This tablet works with 8GB DDR3 RAM combined with either i5 or i7 Intel Core processors – 3rd gen Ivy Bridge, of course. Up front you get a 10.1-inch IPS display at 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution with a 16:10 aspect ratio – and that’s not all!

firstaaa

This machine is exciting – not just because it has the specifications at the top of its game in processing power and display abilities (10 point multitouch included), but because it’s ready to roll with features like a side-loading removable battery. When’s the last time you had any kind of tablet with a removable battery? This beast also comes with an active digitizer (digital stylus) that’s able to work with digital inking under Microsoft Windows, pressure sensitive up to 1024 levels – sounds pretty ok!

second

This X15 machine is able to be delivered with just wi-fi internet connectivity or up to 3G – make sure you’ve got the right model, but the capability is there. You’ve got an optional dock with keyboard (transformable!) as well, offering additional battery time, Ethernet port, VGA out, SD card slot, and one USB port. They say this keyboard is also “very comfortable for long-duration touch-typing”, but we’ll be the judge of that in the near future.

modular

This machine is customizable – it’s got an external side-panel that’s able to be fitted with a collection of modules. Future modules include multi-card reader, video recording unit, projector, scanner bay, and more – but take note: Dynamism warns that you should purchase the X15 only after the module you desire is released for sale. There’s a possibility here that there may be “module release delays” as they say, and they warn that the return window for this unit will not be extended beyond their standard time for any reason, this including module release delays of all kinds.

That said, you’ve got internal memory and mini PCI-E slots to let you boost your customization to the max whenever you need. Have a peek at this monster in the demonstration video below and let us know if you’re all about it or if you’ll be waiting for alternatives in the future from manufacturers other than KUPA.

Kupa X15 Windows 8 tablets now available for purchase

kupax15 Kupa X15 Windows 8 tablets now available for purchaseWe expect that down the road there will be a lot more Windows 8 tablets made available as more manufacturers get on board, but if you’d rather not wait, Kupa might have a Windows 8 tablet for you that could be worth your consideration. Dubbed the X15, Kupa will have four different versions of the tablet for you depending on your price range. It starts at $1,100 for the X15 Elite, and goes up to $1,600 for the X15 Ultra. As far as specs go, all four models will share some basic specs such as 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a 10.1” IPS 1920×1080 Full HD touchscreen display, a 1.3MP front-facing camera, a 5MP rear-facing camera and Bluetooth 4.0.

What differentiates the models would be its storage space which ranges from a 64GB SSD up to 128GB SSD, and the choice of going with an Intel i5 processor or an Intel i7 processor. It should be worth noting that the more expensive models, the X15 Lux and X15 Ultra will come with HSPA+ connectivity. When Kupa first unveiled the UltraNote back at MobileCon 2012, the device came with more features such as LTE connectivity and NFC, but we guess Kupa decided to drop those features in favor of HSPA+, presumably as a cost-cutting measure. For more information or to get in touch with Kupa to purchase an X15 for yourself, head on over to their website for the details.

Kupa X15 Windows 8 tablet gets production ready, now on sale starting at $1,100

When we first saw the Kupa UltraNote back at MobileCon 2012, the convertible Windows 8 slate had all the markings of a reference design: NFC, fingerprint scanner, LTE, digitizer and Intel Core i7 processor. But production realities change things some, and now that this particular tab is finally on sale, a few of its specs have been swapped out. Starting at $1,100 and rebadged as the X15, this 10.1-inch slate still reps a 1,920 x 1,200 IPS display, dual 1.3-megapixel front-facing / 5-megapixel rear cameras, support for WiFi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0, as well as up to 128GB SSD, but now comes in four configurations. Most notably, its allotment of DDR3 RAM’s been doubled to 8GB across the board, although users seeking that previously announced Ivy Bridge Core i7 will have to opt for the high-end Ultra model as the lesser Elite, Pro and Lux builds all feature an Intel Core i5. LTE support seems to have been dropped altogether in favor of HSPA+ connectivity on the Ultra and Lux units. If you’re interested in what Kupa’s selling here, you’ll need to contact the company directly — there’s no easy link on its site to simply purchase the X15 tablet outright.

Keep lurking long enough and you’ll find the unexpected. Even at MobileCon 2012. Exhibit A: the Kupa UltraNote modular tablet running Windows 8. This 0.6-inch (15mm) thick slate is powered by an Intel Core i7 processor (Ivy Bridge) with 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 64GB SSD. It features a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200-pixel IPS display with a ten-point capacitive multitouch layer and a Wacom-like digitizer for pen input. Other amenities include WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and 3G/4G (LTE) radios along with dual cameras (2MP in front, 5MP in back), NFC and a fingerprint reader. There’s a SIM slot, headphone jack, mini HDMI output and two USB 3.0 ports on the right side of the device, plus a proprietary power / docking connector on the bottom edge. A 45Wh slide-out Li-Ion battery is located on the left side.

While the specs are pretty much what you’d expect from a decent Windows 8 tablet, it’s the modular design that makes Kupa UltraNote unique. There’s an Asus Transformer-like keyboard dock which boasts an additional battery, power jack, SD card slot, Ethernet connector, VGA output and two USB 3.0 ports. Accessories such as credit card reader can be attached the left or right edge of the slate thanks to a built-in latch mechanism. It’s clear that the company is targeting the enterprise and vertical markets and even positioning itself as an ODM. We spent a few minutes with the device and were impressed with how lightweight it was (760g / 1.67 lbs). Build quality, however, left a lot to be desired, even for a prototype. Still, overall performance was solid, both in terms of speed and responsiveness.

There’s no word yet on pricing and availability, but take a look at our gallery and be sure to peek after the break for our hands-on video.

Hands On With The Kupa UltraNote, A Modular, Customizable Tablet That Makes Windows 8 Shine

IMG_9478

At the Pepcom MobileFocus event at CTIA MobileCon, an unlikely underdog made a very big impression on me. It was the Kupa UltraNote, and it was my first hands on with a tablet that ships with Windows 8 installed. The Kupa impressed, from its modular design that allows for ample customizability, to its pen-based, pressure-sensitive input system that makes drawing on the tablet a pleasure.

The UltraNote isn’t Kupa’s first crack at a Windows tablet; the company also put out the X11, a Windows 7 device that received positive reviews from some quarters. But this is the first of its tablet products that has a truly compatible and suitable partner in the form of Windows 8, which is built from the ground up for touchscreen input. And the difference really shows in Kupa’s latest effort.

The UltraNote is an Intel Ivy Bridge i7, i5 or i3-based Windows 8 device, with a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 IPS display. It offers 10 points of multitouch input sensitivity, comes with digitizer pen input with 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity (on par with some pro drawing tablets), ships with 4GB of RAM and is expandable up to 8GB, and offers either 64GB or 128GB of SSD storage. It also weighs only 760g, has a seven-hour battery life, or 12 hours with a docking station accessory, and even boasts a user-swappable battery that Kupa says will be inexpensive to replace.

There’s also a SIM card slot on that list of pleasant surprises, and Kupa CTO Yuan Xie explained in an interview that it will work with a modular handset extension to operate as a real, practical phone. It also has two USB 3.0 slots, an HDMI out, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and 3G/4G LTE radios, as well as Bluetooth 4.0, RFID and NFC.

The modularity allows the Kupa UltraNote to dock additional accessories to one side, making it possible to add additional ports, additional hardware accessories and more.

Xie was also particularly proud of the screen, which avoids the typical 1920 x 1080 resolution for 10.1-inch displays Windows is pushing, and providers users with more usable screen real estate, which he says is better for productivity apps.

The UltraNote ships in November, the company says, and for a price that’s yet to be determined, along with a keyboard dock accessory that’s also still not priced. We’ll have more time with the device when it’s ready to ship and will let you know how it performs in longer trials. But for now it’s a very promising early look at Win 8 on tablet hardware.
