Light ‘0’ Concrete Lamp: Definitely Not Light as a Feather

I’ve seen lamps made of many different materials, but this is the first concrete lamp I’ve come across. It looks quite interesting, but it’s not going to be a very lightweight lamp.

Light ‘0’ was created by the South Korean studio 220plus. Their solution is simple, and the structure mixes both warm and cold materials. The most striking feature is the lampshade that’s made from concrete, with an exposed cable. The designers say that it’s been made to enhance the mobility and functionality of the lamp, allowing for different positions to manage your lighting solution.

The Light ‘0’ lamp will be available for purchase in October 2013, and it will come in both table and floor lamp variants.

Anyone who grew up with cassette tapes is going to love these LED mixtape lamps from Etsy seller Break The Record. They look amazing, even if they don’t play any music.

Nintendo Controller LED Wall Art: A Gamepad for your Pad

Looking for something classy to hang on the wall of your man-cave? Something that screams video game geek, but has a classy feel? Well, this Nintendo Controller LED Light Art may be just the thing.

Etsy artist TheDailyRobot experimented with a lot of laser engraving and LED lighting configurations before he was able to offer this amazing edge-lit laser-etched light piece. Ultimately, he laser etched a piece of clear acrylic and placed it behind another identical non-etched sheet to get the cool effect. It looks fantastic.

The NES controller glows a bright red, but he does have other colors available if you so desire.  This light is only $75(USD) and would look great in any geekily decorated room.

Your Busted Apple MagSafe Cords Power These Clever Lamps

The MagSafe power cord is one of Apple’s smartest features. They tend to crap out after a few months of hard use, though, thanks either to your poor wire-wrapping technique or your dog’s penchant for copper wire. But that doesn’t have to be the end of the line.

Philips Hue Adds LivingColors Bloom Lamp and Flexible LightStrips to the Family

I really love my Philips Hue wireless bulbs. In fact, I’ve got my entire man cave/home theater/game room outfitted with the colorful, remote-controlled lights in my ceiling fixtures. But one thing that’s bugged me about the lamps so far is that they only come as reflector bulbs. Well, not for much longer. Philips has just announced that they are releasing the lamps in two new form factors, being dubbed the “Friends of Hue” line.

First up is the LivingColors Bloom. This compact lamp can be set on any flat surface and used to add a splash of color across walls or ceilings. It’s similar to earlier LivingColors lamps, but at a more reasonable price-point ($79.95 USD), and compatible with the Hue controller without any fiddling.

The more intriguing of the additions to the Hue line-up are the Hue LightStrips. These multicolored strips of LEDs can be placed just about anywhere – under furniture, inside bookcases or window sills, and can produce a bright line of linear accent light.

The LightStrips come in 6.6 foot-long sections which can be cut to size if you’d like. At $89.95 per strip, they’re not as cheap as plain-jane RGB LED strips, but they’re fully compatible with the Hue controller and apps without any additional hardware, which is what really makes these unique. Both products are made to complement Hue bulbs, so they’re designed to add splashes of rich color instead of some of the less saturated colors of the bulbs.

Both LivingColors Bloom and LightStrips will be sold through Apple Stores starting this Thursday, August 8th, though I already found the Bloom Lamp listed as in stock.

Nintendo R.O.B. Robot: The Lamp

I always thought that Pixar’s original Luxo, Jr. had a whole lot of personality for a desk lamp. But imagine if your lamp had eyes and arms? That’s what you get when you buy the Nintendo Robotic Operating Buddy lamp.

nes rob lamp 1

It started out as one of those Nintendo robots from the 1980s, but has since been decommissioned and turned into a table lamp. Despite the fact that R.O.B. no longer functions as a NES peripheral, you can still rotate him 360 degrees, open and close his arms, raise and lower his arms and shoulders, and even grip things in his pincers.

The NES R.O.B. lamp is available over on Woody6Switch’s Etsy shop for $125(USD).

How to Train Your Dragon… To Be a Lamp That Breathes Fire

If you have watched How to Train You Dragon – and who hasn’t? – then you already know that the Night Fury dragon is pretty cool. Well, he just got cooler. How about the Night Fury dragon in your room as a lamp that breathes fire?

I thought that would get your attention. Crafter Undead-geologist created this desktop lamp. It looks neat, yes, but the best part is that it actually breathes fire from it’s mouth instead of using a lightbulb. Though its fuel source is ethyl alcohol, not dragon’s breath.

Don’t drain your dragon though. When you are done using the lamp, just cap the flame with a mini viking helmet. Perfect.

Geometric Origami Lamps: Folding Light

Many years ago – it seems like a lifetime – I used to be a theatrical lighting designer. Even though I’m not in the business any more, I’m always on the lookout for cool lighting fixtures. While digging through the recesses of Etsy, I came across a unique series of lamps from artist Roger Gano of Golden Heart Illuminations.

My personal favorite is his red and gold Dream Weaver origami table lamp shown here. The fixture has two main components. The globe is handmade from 120 interlocking origami components, constructed from translucent parchment paper held together with shoji paper and Japanese Nori glue. The base of the lamp is constructed from veneered MDF formed into a wavelike shape, and then strung with thread. The spines of the lamp are textured with sand and eight coats of acrylic paint, infused with iridescent mica particles. The finished lamp base is reminiscent of the structural composition of a suspension bridge.

It’s really a spectacular design, and definitely something your friends won’t already have in their homes. The lamp shown here is selling for $365(USD), but Golden Heart Illuminations has many other lamps, including ceiling floor and table lamps ranging in price from $55 all the way up to $825.

King Edison Pendant Lamp: Which Came First, the Light Bulb or the Chandelier?

What you see below is not a product of Photoshop. It’s the King Edison Pendant Lamp designed by Young & Battaglia, and it’s a cross between a light bulb and a chandelier.

King Edison Pendant Lamp

Now normally, the chandelier would have a bunch of bulbs installed all around it. The tables are turned in this unusual lamp, though, as the chandelier is found inside a larger-than-usual “light bulb” with a diameter of 15 centimeters. It’s definitely an unusual piece to have in your home.

The King Edison is described as a combination of “the pure simplicity of an Edison light bulb with the romance and glamour of a Kings chandelier”, consisting of “a miniature brass chandelier inside a hand blown clear glass shade and satin chrome fittings.”

Something as intricate and unique as this obviously doesn’t come cheap. The King Edison is available online from Mineheart for £480 (~ $737 USD).
