Gigabyte Smart Lamp doubles as an Ultrabook hub, is missing a few ports handson

Things we expected to see at the world’s premier computer show: mainstream notebooks, gaming notebooks, thin notebooks (“pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp“), maybe even a tablet or two. But a desk lamp? Not so much. And yet, that might be the most memorable thing Gigaybte is showing here at Computex. The Smart Lamp is, as you’d expect, a proper light, one you can use on four different brightness settings. But it also doubles as a laptop hub, with a DVD player built into the base, along with a handful of other ports. These include two USB sockets, dual headphone / earphone jacks and an SD reader.

It’s a neat idea, to be sure — who doesn’t love two-in-one devices – but considering it’s supposed to supplement the ports normally found on Ultrabooks, it seems to be missing quite a few big ones. Why not throw in an HDMI port, or some other kind of display output? Ooh, or how about an Ethernet jack? Or a DVD drive that can burn discs in addition to play them? Anyway, you can color us slightly disappointed after having gotten an up-close look, even if the concept itself deserves an ‘A’ for creativity. No word yet on how much this will cost, when it will go on sale or in which countries it will be available. Until then, check out the walk-through video below — not that this thing needs much further explanation.

Evolution of Nintendo Controllers: The Lamp

I could use a new bedside lamp, but I’m pretty sure my wife would make me sleep in the doghouse for a week if I bought this one.

nintendo lamp

This Nintendo controller lamp was cobbled together by Etsy artist Woody 6 Switch, and features controllers from the N64, Gamecube, Super Nintendo, NES and Wii. While it’s incomplete without a Wii U touchscreen controller, I’d imagine that would increase the cost of the lamp significantly. Though I do think it would make for a good base for it. And if you’re wondering about the NES Zapper light gun, that’s available in a separate lamp for the other side of the bed.

While these are awesomely geeky, they’re never coming in my house. For some reason, I’m reminded of the whole Leg Lamp story in A Christmas Story. I think I’d wake up one morning to find it in pieces on the floor, and all of the glue in the house would be used up.

Portal Test Chamber Wall Lamp: Proceed at Your Own Risk

dominator24 moved to a new apartment and needed to do something about all the bare walls. They did what any geek would do, and decided to make something cool, instead of just buying another crummy IKEA fixture – a wall lamp based on the level signage from Portal’s test chambers.

It was a simple design since it had to be able to fit in the car (due to college, dominator24 moves every three months.) It also had to be cheap. He came up with the idea of using white cloth stretched over a wooden frame with LED rope backlighting.

The detailed drawings are made from cut out bits of duct tape – the black ones on front of the cloth, and the grey ones taped on back.. It’s a simple and cheap way to geek up your room. If you want to try making one for yourself, head on over to Instructables for the details.

Satechi USB Bottle Lamp lights your desk with LEDs and power from a PC

Satechi's $25 USB Bottle Lamp lights your desk with LEDs and power from your PC

Sure, the novelty may have worn off years ago when it comes to those miniature USB-powered accessories that reside on your desk and suck power from a PC, but this nifty lamp from Satechi has a bit more going for it. The simply named USB LED Bottle Lamp consumes just 1.2 watts of power, and while it won’t likely have enough output to fill a room, it’ll probably do a fair job of bringing some warmth to your workstation. The kit includes only a lampshade, LEDs (rated for 50,000 hours) and a USB cable — that’s right, it’s BYOB (Bring Your Own Base). A heavy liquor bottle might be the best fit when it comes to support, but you can use a vase or any similar vessel to keep the lamp upright, too. The USB Bottle Lamp can be yours today for just 25 bucks. Hit the source link below to pick one up.

Liquid Lifebar: Trippy HP

Lava lamp? Pfff. YouTuber bfayer made a life-a-lamp. His calls his invention the Liquid Lifebar. It reflects to the amount of health or mana of his character in Terraria in real time. If he has a lot of health, the lamp’s water level is high and it glows a healthy green. But if he gets hit, the water level drops and the color gets warmer. When it turns red, he’s dead.

Bfayer made a time-lapse video of his build process. You can see the Liquid Lifebar spring to life at about 3:50 in:

Check the video’s description on YouTube to see the complete parts list. It would be awesome if bfayer could make it work in reverse as well, i.e. the Liquid Lifebar dictates the amount of his character’s health or mana.

Steampunk AT-ST Desktop Lamp: For Fighting off Desk Ewoks

Desk Ewoks can be a serious problem. They are attracted by crumbs and spills from hundreds of late night gaming sessions with never a clean-up. Yeah, I’m surprised you haven’t seen them yet either. It’s just a matter of time. So how do you combat Desk Ewoks? You get yourself a AT-ST Desktop lamp, that’s what.

This Steampunk AT-ST Lamp was made by Gozdom using wood, bronze and copper overlays and looks pretty awesome. It’s made to resemble the AT-ST scout walker, but with a head that resembles the boiler of a steam locomotive.

Okay, so the Empire’s machines didn’t do so well against Ewoks and their primitive weapons on Endor, but at least you will have a fighting chance when the Desk Ewoks show up.

The Mister Boom, featured above, has a light switch that looks and works like an old-fashioned TNT detonator, while Little Miss Dynamite has a smaller and more modern dial switch. Both are meant to be wired to “light bombs” shaped like bundles of dynamite.

Super Mario Bros. Lamp Lights up the Darkest Secret Areas of Your Mushroom Kingdom

If you are going to make a Super Mario Bros. lamp, it definitely needs to have some pipes in it. And this lamp uses pipes very effectively, being made from black iron pipes with a candelabra lightbulb sticking out of one of them.

To turn on the lamp, just pull the chain on the left and it’s like Mario is about to enter a Warp Pipe. It’s a simple but effective design and totally captures the feel of the game. You choose from different characters if plain old Mario isn’t your favorite. You can even go with Yoshi or Toad.

These lamps are made to order by T Rowe Designs and will ship within 7-10 days after your purchase. They sell for just about $200(USD). Better start collecting some gold coins now.
