Levitron Lamp

You might not be the wise old man sitting at the top of an impossible-to-climb mountain, and neither are you a swami who sleeps on a bed of nails, but this does not mean you are unable to make things levitate. Thing is, you will first need to lighten your bank account by $150 before you are able to get hold of the Levitron Lamp which is light as air, and the middle bit of the lamp does seem as though it is “missing”, hence leaving the top bit floating .

The Levitron Lamp is lit by half a dozen cool-white, high-intensity LEDs, where this illusionary lamp will blend both art with innovative technology into accent lighting. Definitely the way to leave a lasting impression, don’t you think so? Thanks to the power of magnetism, this apparently gravity-defying “shade” of the lamp will remain suspended over an inch above its base, making it look as though it remains floating on a halo of light. Some assembly required, so you might want to enlist some help from your man to get it up and running.

One Swedish Made Light Enlarging Lamp

Simple is an understatement when it comes to the Vinge, a fine piece of lamp from Swedish design firm Note Design Studio. Stripped down to its essentials, the fixture puts out a beautifully soft light as a result of its massive white dome. And if the quality of light weren’t enough for you, the wing around the base spins 180 degrees letting you fine tune the light output to the exact mood you prefer for the moment. More »

Lumio hides a lamp inside the pages of a book, takes to Kickstarter (video)

Image

Last week, we stopped by the TechShop to check out Lumio, a lamp that’s masquerading as a book. While you could probably make one of your own with a few trips to IKEA, we’re rather taken with the idea of toting one of these around in our bags. Now, inventor Max Gunawan has followed through on his promise to get the hardware onto Kickstarter, where he’s already half-way toward his $60,000 goal to start his first production run. Still to be convinced that he needs your money? Head on past the break to watch the pitch.

Lumio desk lamp takes light reading literally (video)

Image

With the future of reading heading squarely in the direction of electronic devices, what to do with the old timey book form? Build a lamp, of course. During a recent visit to the City by the Bay, we popped into the TechShop hackerspace and were introduced to Max Gunawan, the designer behind Lumio (not to be confused with a certain smartphone line of similar name). The product, developed in that very space, offers up a cool take on the desktop lamp, fitting it into a wooden, old timey-looking book form. Open it up and the pages fan out into what looks like a paper lantern.

It’s an LED light powered by a lithium ion battery that’ll give you around eight hours on a charge. Due to the foldable nature of the Lumio, the device is portable and can be opened into a number of configurations, to suit your needs. Gunawan is a couple of days away from launching a Kickstarter page for the project, in hopes of getting together $60,000. Interested funders will be able to pick one up for around $95 — wait for it to come to market, and that price will jump to around $125 or $135.

After the break, check out a video of Gunawan giving us the lowdown on Lumio.

POOP Lamps Aren’t Crappy at All

I’ve seen some unusual lamps in my time, but I have to say this is the first time I’ve ever seen a lamp that’s designed to look like a dollop of poo. Yep, in this world of crazy, crowdsourced ideas, we officially have they quirkiest product to turn up on Quirky yet.

poop lamp 1

Designed by Diana Dumitrescu, the POOP lamp lets forth a lovely ambient glow from its soft and creamy pile. The USB-powered poo is made from a soft foam material which allows the warm glow from inside shine through. At this point, it looks like the POOP lamp will come in a somewhat unnatural orange color – unless you happen to eat a lot of carrots. Diana says it could be easily produced in other colors too. Just don’t make one in green, or with lumpy bits. Heck, if you made a white one, it would just look like whipped cream.

Besides looking like Japanese anime dookie, it’s actually a pretty clever lamp design, with a USB rechargeable battery and cool-burning, eco-friendly LED light source inside. Plus, it’s packed in a lovely can simply marked as “POOPINACAN.” How could you go wrong?

If you’re ready to put a steaming pile of poop on your desk, then head over to Quirky now and show your support for the project.

DIY Legend of Zelda Lamp: The Triforce of Thrift

deviantART member Eric Margera said he was inspired to make his own Triforce lamp when he saw one on Etsy. I wouldn’t be surprised if he saw the exact same lamp that we featured last year. Eric was kind enough to share his build process so you too can save some rupees and make your own lamp.

Eric made his lamp out of 4mm thick beech wood, 3mm thick yellow acrylic glass, a bulb and a bulb holder. He used a Dremel rotary tool to cut the wood and glass and some silicone glue to put them together. He also used his rotary tool to drill the Triforce-shaped holes on the sides of the lamp.

It’s dangerous to build alone! Take this link to Eric’s deviantART page for more info on the project.

Good Night Lamp Is Connected To The Internet

good night lamp Good Night Lamp Is Connected To The InternetSo we have a smart home that is hooked up to the Internet, while there are also smart refrigerators as well as Smart TVs by different manufacturers which basically have one thing in common – they cannot live without the Internet, and I am starting to suspect that regular human beings, too, would find life less than ideal if they were to be deprived of their Internet connection. Well, the Good Night Lamp works in somewhat the same manner as it comes across as a series of Internet-connected lamps which will be controlled by a single, main lamp. Should the Big Lamp turn on or off, the rest of the Little Lamps will also follow in a corresponding manner.

Just what kind of practical use is this good for? Imagine you, being the king of your own castle, send all the other little ones to family and friends who stay far from you – at least when you turn off your lamp, it tells them that you, too, have retired to bed. A representation of the social network on a physical plane, perhaps, and this is a Kickstarter at best for now. If you pledge £89, you will end up with a Big Lamp and one Little Lamp, with the option to add more Little Lamps later on for approximately £15 to £20 a pop.

Lumio a Kickstarter project worth looking into

For some of us, we would love nothing better than to unwind with a good book in hand after a particularly gruelling day at work, and this would mean three things: you would need a very comfortable sofa or chair to read your book, have some cookies and milk on the side, and of course, own a decent lamp or lighting source so that your eyes need not end up more strained than they already are after a long day at the office, staring at the monitor for hours on end.

Chances are most nooks and crannies of your home already have a lamp, but how about getting a lamp that is designed in a less traditional manner? Why not pick up the Lumio, a Kickstarter project that comes in the form of a book and also functions as a light source? It is made to function just like a book as well, where all you need to do is turn the cover, and the light within will turn on. It is powered by LEDs, and a full charge can last it up to 8 hours on the go, making it ideal to bring with you wherever you go. Thanks to its flexible nature, it can be styled a number of ways, ranging from a table lamp to a ceiling pendant and an accent light among others.

Pneumatic Tool Lamps: Nailed It.

Are you handy with tools? Well you could head to your workshop and make yourself a lamp, I suppose, or you could buy one that’s actually made out of a power tool.

pneumatic tool lamps

These unusual lighting fixtures are made by Aaron Jarry of JEngineering using pneumatic nail guns mounted to an ebony-stained oak base, and come with an appropriately masculine black lampshade to top them off. Aaron cleverly conceals the power cord inside the air hose to complete the look.

I’m guessing that they no longer function for firing nails or staples, but it would be cool if that’s how you attached them to your table. You know – press the trigger and it nails itself in place. That’d be cool.

DIYers and Tool Timers can improve their home with one of these lamps over on JEngineering’s Etsy shop for $180 to $200 (USD).
