OLPC XO-4 to sell starting at $206, production commencing March

OLPC XO4 to sell starting at $206, production commencing next March

We were told we wouldn’t be hearing any pricing or availability information about the OLPC XO-4 until later in the week, but it didn’t take the One Laptop Per Child folks too long to let us know a little more about their gameplan. Just a short while ago, OLPC let us know that its recently announced XO-4 kid-friendly laptop will sell for $206 per unit with a minimum purchase of 10,000 units, while pricing is said to be lowered with a greater volume order. Additionally, the company noted that it’s planning on meeting its own expectations and starting mass production in March, which should be more than enough time for interested parties to start figuring out just how many OLPC XO-4 orders they will be placing. Oh, and in case you’re interested, we also got some hands-on video earlier today — you can check that out right after the break.

Samsung Series 7 Chronos and Series 7 Ultra hands-on

Samsung may have focused on Smart TV in its CES 2013 press conference, but the company also had a pair of new lightweight notebooks – the Series 7 Chronos and Series 7 Ultra – to announce. Packing a 15.6-inch and 13.3-inch display respectively, the two new laptops offer up to 11hrs runtime and Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution displays, while throwing in a touch layer for 10-finger action, too.

The Chronos – shown below – runs Windows 8 on a Core i7-3635QM processor with up to 16GB of RAM and AMD Radeon HD 8870M 2GB graphics. There’s up to 1TB of internal storage, a 720p webcam, backlit keyboard, and 4Wx2 JBL speakers.

The whole thing is surprisingly lightweight, given it’s a 15-inch notebook, and the keyboard feels crisp and responsive. The brushed metal finish is suitably premium, but the display is incredibly glossy; true, we were playing with the Chronos in a well-lit hall, but even sunlight from a nearby window could prove more than distracting. It only gets worse when you start to add in greasy fingerprints, too.

As for the Series 7 Ultra, shown below, that runs a choice of Core i5 or i7 processors with AMD HD8570M 1GB graphics and up to 16GB of RAM. It opts for a 256GB SSD rather than an old-school hard-drive, though the smaller form-factor means it makes do with half the speaker power. Samsung will offer both touch and non-touch variants; both will have a backlit keyboard, which is usable despite the smaller size.

It’s a lightweight machine, with easily accessible ports – including USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 – and both HDMI and mini VGA. Samsung reckons up to eight hours can be squeezed from the battery, and there’ll be optional 4G LTE. The portability box is ticked straight off, then, and Samsung’s quoted 178-degree viewing angles work out to a screen you can see clearly, without inversions or blurring even if you’re sat off to one side of the notebook.

Unfortunately, Samsung isn’t talking pricing or availability for either the Series 7 Chronos or the Series 7 Ultra.

AMD announces Temash, Kabini, Richland, and Kaveri APUs at CES 2013 (video)

AMD announces Temash, Kabini, Richland, and Kaveri APUs at CES 2013 video

AMD’s press event here in Vegas just wrapped up, and if there’s a single acronym to describe everything that we witnessed, it’s this: APU. The two highlights were codenamed Temash and Kabini, two products that the company is touting as its first true system-on-chip APUs. In fact, each of ’em will launch as the “industry’s first quad-core x86 SoCs” in the first half of 2013. It also took the wraps off of Richland, an APU that’s presently shipping to OEMs and promises to deliver “more than 20 percent to up to 40 percent over the previous generation of AMD A-Series APUs.”

The outfit will be bundling Richland will new software for consumers such as gesture- and facial-recognition, while the follow-on will be the 28nm APU codenamed “Kaveri” — a device that should ship to customers during the second half of 2013. We’re also told that AMD’s newest silicon will be used in various HP Sleekbooks and Vizio’s 11.6-inch APU-powered tablet, two Vizio ultrathin laptops, and a 24-inch AIO desktop. Hungry for more? The full release is after the break.

Sony announces touch-enabled VAIO T15 Ultrabook with touch, new touch-enabled VAIO T14

DNP EMBARGO Sony

We’ve already hinted that the name of the game for laptops at CES will likely be incremental updates, and the latest company to prove our point is Sony. The PC division just announced an optional touchscreen for its VAIO T Series 14 Ultrabook, which originally debuted back in October. The touch T14 will be available for $800 in the spring.

In addition to updating the T Series 14, Sony is releasing the T Series 15, which boasts a full HD touch display and will go for $950 when it hits the market this spring. Why no specs, you ask? Well, the company isn’t sharing any yet — and we suspect that has something to do with Intel’s releasing a new chipset in the near future. Finally, talk about incremental — Sony’s last PC announcement is a new color for the VAIO Duo 11 slider: it’s now available in silver in addition to the original black.

Samsung expands its Dropbox integration to include PCs, Smart Cameras

Dropbox eagle velociraptor shark isn't this awesome

Samsung has been enraptured with Dropbox and its cloud storage since last year, and we’re quickly learning that it’s a long-term love affair. The Korean firm is expanding its integration with Dropbox to not just include another smartphone, the Galaxy Grand, but also its 2013-era PCs (now that Windows 8 has support) and Smart Cameras. Details of when the integration comes, and exactly how it works, aren’t forthcoming just yet. It’s safe to presume, however, that a large part of Samsung’s technology this year will put online sharing front and center.

X875 Q7280 OPEN FRNT LT45 Toshiba Qosmio X875 Laptop Announced

[CES 2013] If Ultrabooks aren’t your thing and you’re looking for something a little more powerful in the graphics department, Toshiba has announced the Qosmio X875 laptop, a 17.3” laptop with an optional 3D-ready display along with a decent discrete graphics card that should allow you to play some of today’s newer games, although we expect that maybe more hardcore gamers will want to stick to a full desktop system. The X875 will sport a TruBrite display and like we said earlier, there is an option where users can configure the laptop to come with a 3D display but we expect that should cost you a bit more.

Vizio 14-inch Thin + Light Touch Notebook

VIZIO 14 inch Thin Light touch Vizio 14 inch Thin + Light Touch Notebook[CES 2013] We have seen our share of new touch notebooks for Windows 8 and today, Vizio is coming to CES with its Thin+Light Touch lineup. The 14-inch model runs the AMD A10 4657M Quad Core 2.3GHz  processor with 8GB RAM and features a HD+ (1600×800) touch display.

From the product photo we have, the aluminum unibody chassis looks thin and elegant, at 0.66-inch it is slimmer than the 13-inch Macbook air, however, it is one pound heavier than the Apple notebook (4.1 lbs vs. 2.96 lbs). I am eager to see it on the show floor at CES to be able to compare the built quality.

VIZIO 11.6-inch Windows 8 Tablet PC

VIZIO 11 6 tablet windows 1 VIZIO 11.6 inch Windows 8 Tablet PC[CES 2013] VIZIO is coming to CES with a number of Windows 8 including thin laptops and one 11. 6” tablet. A hair thicker than the iPad (0.4” vs. 0.37” – 9.4 mm / 10.16 mm) for a significantly larger display (11.6” vs. 9.5”), the VIZIO tablet  runs an AMD Z60 dual-core 1 GHz processor with 2GB RAM. That processor should deliver higher performance than the Microsoft Surface which runs on nVidia’s Tegra 3. The downside of the AMD solution would probably come from the shorter battery life.

The Full HD display (1920 x 1080) supports ten-fingers touch to comfortably operates the new Microsoft OS. There is only one front facing 2 MP camera however, the 64GB SSD offers good storage capacity. On the connectivity side, you will get the standard Micro HDMI out, micro USB 2.0, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. At 1.66 lbs, the device weighs a little more than the iPad (1.44 lbs) and the Surface RT (less than 1.5 lbs) with a larger body.

This seems to be an excellent Windows 8 tablet on the paper, but with no information regarding the pricing we cannot tell if this is a good product or not. In addition, we need to see it with our own eyes to check the build quality and actual battery life.

Toshiba updates its all-in-ones, mainstream Satellite laptops for early 2013

Toshiba updates allinones, mainstream Satellite laptops for early 2013

Sometimes a PC lineup just needs a little nip and tuck, you know? Toshiba certainly thinks so, as it’s sweeping through its everyday all-in-one and laptop ranges with tweaks. The most conspicuous update we see is for the higher-end Satellite P series portables, which receive a Windows 8-friendly touchscreen on the 14-inch model and a 1080p display for the 17.3-inch behemoth. Toshiba also says it’s sprucing up the LX815 and LX835 all-in-ones, as well as the Satellite C, L and S series laptops, although the company isn’t specific on what’s truly new — we’ve reached out and will let you know what tune-ups are enroute. Regardless of the scope, all the new mainstream models should ship in February, with prices to come later.
