Lenovo ThinkPad X240 Ultrabook Announced

Lenovo ThinkPad X240 Ultrabook AnnouncedAre all Ultrabooks created equal? Lenovo does not think so, as they have just revealed the ThinkPad X240 which has been touted to be a high performance thin and light business Ultrabook, specially constructed to deliver maximum portability and functionality. Just how lightweight and portable is it? Well, it measures a mere 20mm in thickness and tips the scales at less than 3 pounds, while running on a 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor to provide you with the relevant processing power whenever you are on the go.

Lenovo outs five new ThinkPads, including a 15-inch business Ultrabook

Lenovo outs five new ThinkPads, including a 15-inch business Ultrabook

It was just last spring at Engadget Expand that Lenovo teased the ThinkPad T431s business Ultrabook, and now it’s already coming out with a follow-on product. The company today announced the refreshed T440s, along with the T440, the X240 (shown above) and two mid-range Ultrabooks, the S440 and the S540. In fact, though the S540 isn’t the highest-end machine on offer here, even that’s worth mention, as it’s the company’s first 15-inch Ultrabook aimed at businesses. (Guess that bigger-screen trend is going strong, eh?)

Diving right in, the 14-inch T440s represents a fairly modest upgrade, as the T431s already ushered in some fairly big design changes (buttonless trackpad, latchless lid, 180-degree hinge, et cetera). The T440s has all that too, except it makes the natural shift to Intel’s fourth-generation Haswell processors, along with an optional NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M GPU (which won’t be offered here in North America). The T440 is closely related, as you’d expect, with similar configuration options (optional touchscreens, up to 12GB of RAM and up to either a 1TB HDD or a 512GB SSD). The main difference is that the resolution on the T440 is also capped at 1,600 x 900, whereas the T440s goes up to 1080p. Also, the T440s is a good lighter than the T440 (read: half a pound less).%Gallery-slideshow73415%

IFA 2013 preview: what to expect

DNP IFA 2013 preview what to expect

CES 2013 was a decidedly sleepy show by most accounts, but this year’s IFA is shaping up to be anything but. Devices set for a reveal are still under proverbial lock and key, but chatter, teases and leaks have painted a fairly full picture of what we can expect to see in Germany: smartwatches and wearables, Haswell hardware and phones with 4K shooters. Join us past the break to get up to speed on what Berlin might dish out this week.

Acer updates Aspire R7 with active pen and Haswell, brings touchscreens to the Aspire E Series

DNP Acer updates Aspire R7 with active pen and Haswell, brings touchscreens to the Aspire E Series

Acer’s announcing a slew of new products today at IFA, but it’s also updating a few existing models with a greater emphasis on touch. In addition to getting the mandatory upgrade to Intel’s Haswell processors, the Aspire R7 will now come bundled with an Acer active pen for use on the 15.6-inch, 1080p touchscreen. Given that the notebook offers four usage modes (including an “Ezel mode” and tablet mode), having this additional input option certainly makes sense. To help you take advantage of the digitizer, the company is adding several apps to its pre-load: MemoryBinder for drawing on top of your photos, ScreenGrasp for capturing images with the pen and Scrapboard for collecting images and ideas, much like Evernote. There’s also AccuFinger, which Acer says helps you select tiny items on-screen when you’re using fingers rather than the pen. As for availability, the new R7 will hit Europe, the Middle East and Africa in late 2013, with the base price set at €999, though we’re not sure when to expect it stateside just yet.

The Aspire E notebook series is also stepping up to Intel’s fourth-gen processors, and Acer’s adding in new AMD options as well. The biggest update, though, is the addition of 10-point multi-touch displays to upcoming models — you’ll appreciate having the option to navigate Windows 8.1 with your fingers, after all. Finally, the Aspire E will be offered in additional colors; you’ll have your choice of Keyboard White, Misty Silver or Piano Black for the 14-inch model, while the 15.6-inch version comes in Cherry Red, Clarinet Black and Steel Grey. (Piano and Clarinet Black options, oh my!) The Aspire E1 will be available in mid-October with a starting price of €399 — no word on US pricing just yet.

Lenovo CEO shares $3.25 million of his bonus with employees (again) after record year

Lenovo CEO shares $325 million of his bonus with employees again after record year

After helping Lenovo thrive in the wretched PC industry — while also making it the number one Chinese smartphone maker — CEO Yang Yuanqing earned a sizeable bonus. And like last year, he’s sharing the wealth with front-line employees, giving $3.25 million of his $14.6 million salary to 10,000 workers in 20 countries. Lenovo grabbed a record $34 billion during its last fiscal year, along with an all-time high $653 million in profit. While the sum he shared may be small compared to that, it’s almost a month’s pay for the 85 percent who work in China. And we can’t say we’ve seen too many CEOs stateside willing to part with their personal private jet fuel stash.

Parallels Desktop 9 supports OS X Mavericks and cloud services, provides mighty performance boost

Parallels Desktop 9 supports OS X Mavericks and cloud services, provides mighty performance boost

Parallels usually does a pretty great job at heavily improving its Mac / Windows fusion software, and we’d say this newly minted version doesn’t fall remotely short of that. Parallels Desktop 9 brings an array of improvements and enhancements to the table: integration with popular cloud services (iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive and more), support for Power Nap on compatible laptops, the ability to have a keyboard customized for Windows and, perhaps most importantly, being friendly with OS X Mavericks. This new iteration is on sale now to new customers for $79.99 or $39.99 for the Student Edition, while Desktop 7 and Desktop 8 users will only have to shell out $49.99 to upgrade. The full list of novel features can be perused in the PR after the break, and there’s also a video in case moving visual images are something you prefer.

Kyocera piezoelectric film speaker delivers 180-degree sound to thin TVs and tablets (update: live photos)

Kyocera piezoelectric film speaker delivers 180degree sound to thin TVs and tablets update live photos

The thinner our devices become, the less room there is for speakers and other thicker components. Kyocera has a solution, however: it just modified its Smart Sonic Receiver conduction technology for use with conventional, over-the-air audio. The company’s new Smart Sonic Sound device still relies on a piezoelectric actuator, but vibrates against a film to generate as much volume as a regular speaker in a far thinner (under 1.5mm thick) design. The new speaker might even sound better than its traditional counterparts. It delivers full volume and quality in a 180-degree listening arc, and it’s responsive enough to recreate very subtle noises. Smart Sonic Sound is already shipping in LG’s 55-inch curved OLED TV, and Kyocera expects it to reach laptops, tablets and other devices where interior space is valuable.

Update: Our colleagues at Engadget Japanese have posted their first-hand look at Kyocera’s speaker technology, complete with a gallery of live photos; we’ve posted two of them here.

Sony teases flexible VAIO Flip PC origami-style (video)

DNP Vaio Flip PC teaser video

We believe Sony just proved it’s the master of teasing flexible laptops by using a piece of paper and basic origami skills to tout its upcoming VAIO Flip PC. If we understood the clip correctly, the device can take the form of a laptop and a tablet, but its keyboard can also fold beneath the screen to act as a stand. Sound familiar? That’s because Lenovo’s Ideapad Yoga 11S has a similar form — tell us we’re not the only ones who smell competition. If you missed the teaser video when it went up briefly last week, check it out after the jump. You won’t be able to glean info other than the hybrid’s forms from it, but you won’t have to wait long anyway — the Flip PC is slated for an IFA 2013 reveal.
