Push notifications come to Chrome and Chrome OS with battery life as a focus

Push notifications come to Chrome and Chrome OS to save battery life

The push notifications on our mobile devices aren’t just for convenience’s sake — they let apps stay idle and conserve precious battery life. That would explain why Google Cloud Messaging is now integrated with all versions of Chrome and Chrome OS, then. While both platforms are usually online as a matter of course, GCM lets developers refresh a web app or extension only when there are noteworthy changes, such as new chats. All end users have to do is sign in. Developers will have to build the feature into their apps before anyone sees the benefits, but we wouldn’t be surprised if our Chromebooks last for just a little bit longer in the near future.

NEC launches VersaPro VX business laptop, VG Ultrabook in Japan

NEC launches VersaPro VX business laptop, VG Ultrabook in Japan

You probably won’t ever see these latest NEC computers hit retailers on this side of the Pacific, but if you do your laptop shopping in Japan, it’s time to listen up. NEC’s just flooded the market with a bounty of fresh models, all likely destined for corporate IT departments, and maybe a few homes.

There are a few additions to the Mate series, including an MG all-in-one, along with ML, ME and MB slim towers. Then, on the portables front, there’s some VB, VH, VD and VA notebooks, followed by two standouts: a VX laptop for 138,500 JPY ($1,400) and a VG Ultrabook priced at a whopping 261,000 JPY (about $2,650). That first model is available with Intel Core i3 or i5 processors, a WXGA 15.6-inch LCD and integrated graphics. The pricey Ultrabook, for its part, can be had with a Core i5 or i7 processor, four gigs of RAM, a 1,600 x 900-pixel 13.3-inch LCD, integrated graphics and either Windows 8 Pro or Windows 7 (huzzah!). There’s plenty more to discover, of course, but we’ll leave that up to you. NEC loyalists can get their fix (in Japanese) at the source link below.

Pegatron increases workforce by 40 percent, adds more grist to Apple rumor mill

DNP Pegatron increases workforce by 40 percent, adds more grist to Apple rumor mill

Whenever a company involved in making Apple products adds to its workforce, the internet is flooded with “cheap iPhone” and “iWatch” stories. The latest event to perk up the rumor mongers is Pegatron, which announced that it’ll be hiring 40,000 more workers in China for the second half of 2013. During an investor call, company president Jason Cheng predicted that revenue from “communication products” would increase by 16 percent between July and December — so hopefully he’s seen something on his order book to make him that confident. That said, the only solid fact we have is that the company has stated it’ll be producing Haswell-powered laptops for a variety of companies, but we won’t let that stop you staring at your wrist and hoping.

Mystery 13-inch Sony Ultrabook slider pops up in horribly grainy YouTube video

Mystery 13-inch Sony Ultrabook slider pops up in horribly grainy YouTube video

We’ve already seen Sony take a stab at a Windows 8 hybrid in the form of the VAIO Duo 11, and now a clip has appeared on YouTube apparently showing an unannounced 13-inch Ultrabook slider with a 1080p Triluminos touchscreen display. Allegedly, the video is being used for training at UK retail chain Dixons, and in addition to repeatedly collapsing and opening the slim white and silver unit, the demonstrator plays around with a stylus in Microsoft’s Fresh Paint. There are a couple of text overlays near the end of clip, highlighting the “SurfSlider design,” backlit keyboard, ClearAudio+ and ActiveSleep tech, as well as its 10 hours of battery life. NFC is also said to be on board, along with an 8-megapixel camera with Exmor RS sensor, Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD. The incredibly grainy video is embedded after the break, and although we can’t verify its authenticity, we also can’t ally it to any known product.

Update: There’s also a handful of press images — we’ve included one after the break too.

[Thanks, Aiga and Christopher]

Airbus A320 family to use Dell Latitude laptops for electronic flight bags

Airbus A320 to use Dell Latitude laptops for some electronic flight bags

Airbus isn’t putting all its eggs in one basket — or rather, one bag. While it already has a suite of iPad cockpit apps to assist pilots, the aircraft maker is hedging its bet with a deal to use Dell Latitude laptops as electronic flight bags on the A320 family. Crews will get the Latitude E6330 installed as a Class-2 device that can link up with the A320’s avionics; as you’d expect, the PCs will also ship with software for maps, manuals and weather. We’ve reached out to learn just which carriers are going this route, although possible expansion to other Airbus vehicles could make Dell a common sight at 36,000 feet.

ASUS ‘We Transform’ Computex teaser leaves us waiting for more teaser videos

ASUS 'We Transform' Computex video lets us know we can expect more teaser videos

Just like last year, ASUS is filling time before the Computex trade show by posting teaser trailers. Sporting a “We Transform” tag, its first one for 2013 features the spun metal casings, touchscreen laptops, convertibles, tablets and phones we’ve become accustomed to from the company. So what’s next? The video doesn’t appear to provide any hints — other than an oddly blacked-out tablet with stylus about 30 seconds in — however the press page linked below includes a countdown to ASUS’ press conference June 3rd, and blank spaces for four more videos to come. We’ll keep an eye out for anything else that fills in the blanks (US release info for the Transformer Book would do the trick), check the video after the break to “transform your expectations of technology.”

Sony VAIO Fit 15 review (2013): Sony’s mainstream notebooks get a makeover

Sony VAIO Fit 15 review 2013 Sony's mainstream notebooks get a makeover

And it begins: back-to-school season. Even though some students are still embroiled in finals, and even though Intel has yet to formally launch Haswell, the next few weeks will see multiple PC makers unveiling their summer lineups. First up: Sony. The company just introduced some new mainstream notebooks, dubbed the “Fit” family. These laptops, which replace the current E series and most of the T line, include the lower-end Fit 14E / Fit 15E, which are made of plastic, and the Fit 14 / Fit 15, which step up to a thinner aluminum chassis and optional SSDs. Either way, Sony is standardizing on certain specs across its entire summer lineup, including 1080p displays, backlit keyboards, NFC and Exmor R webcams for better low-light images. We’ve just spent a week testing the Fit 15, which will be available later this month for $700 and up. (The rest of the Fit line starts as low as $550.) Head past the break to see if it’s worth a closer look once it hits store shelves.
