NASA has smashed its record for transmitting data to and from the moon. Now, it boasts a frankly amazing 622Mbps transfer speed to the rock that circles our little planet.
Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise; highlighting a character’s crotch on-screen at the movies is hi-larious, and always will be. But getting caught with a laser pointer in your hand and tossed out of the theater isn’t. So thankfully red lasers have been around for decades, and have been miniaturized to the point where they can hide inside your smartphone’s headphone jack.

There are more than 450 artificial caves excavated from sandstone beneath the streets and buildings of Nottingham, England—including, legendarily, the old dungeon that once held Robin Hood. Not all of these caves are known even today, let alone mapped or studied.
Ever since the late 17th century, it’s been understood that to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. That’s Newton’s Third Law of Motion. But a group of German scientists recently came up with a trick that appears to break that law, one that lets light accelerate all by itself. And it could bring us faster electronics in the process.
There’s really no practical reason anyone needs to own a high-powered green laser pointer (sorry stargazers, not buying it) but that doesn’t make them any less desirable. Especially now that Wicked Lasers has just revealed the Evo which can be customized and controlled via an app on your Android or iOS smartphone.
Observatories don’t just gaze into the endless starry abyss above our heads; sometimes that’s not enough. Sometimes they shoot righteous 40-watt lasers into the great beyond too. Obviously it looks awesome, and this stellar timelapse showcases exactly how awesome. (Spoilers: very awesome.)
Just getting a particle up to near the speed of light isn’t good enough for today’s physics. To properly unravel the fundamentals of the universe, particles have to be smashed together with enormous force. And two Stanford researchers have just devised a laser-based method that imparts ten times the power of traditional methods at a fraction of the cost.
We’ve seen real laser guns before, pulling off tricks like starting small fires,
If you take a step back and really think about it, we’re living in a pretty futuristic age. People are flying around on jetpacks. Everybody’s carrying around pocket computers. We go to space, like, all the time. We can control prosthetic limbs with our minds
