Nubia Z5 unveiled in China with quad-core chip, 5-inch 1080p display and 7.6mm thickness

Nubia Z5 unveiled as the world's thinnest 5inch 1080p phone, available in January

Much like many Chinese smartphone brands these days, ZTE sub-brand Nubia had prematurely given away the main selling points of its Z5 ahead of its Beijing launch today, but there were still some surprises. As you probably already know, here’s yet another five-inch 1080p Android phone featuring Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064, 2GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage, along with a 13-megapixel F2.2 main camera (with five-element optics by Konica Minolta, plus separate touch focus and touch exposure in the app) and a two-megapixel front-facing camera. For multimedia consumption, the Z5 supports WiFi Display and MHL output should you wish to beam content to a larger screen; whereas on the audio side you are spoiled with either Yamaha or Dolby Digital Plus. But wait, there’s more!

iPhone 5 Sales In China Reportedly “Robust,” Despite Lack Of Lineups

apple china shanghai

Apple’s iPhone 5 is a “hit” according to English-language Chinese newspaper Shanghai Daily, despite the fact that there were not huge lineups or riots in the streets as there were on iPhone 4S launch day. That’s because most of the new phones were sold at China Unicom and China Telecom stores, the newspaper reports, rather than at Apple’s three Shanghai stores. In Shanghai alone, the newspaper puts first day sales at around 20,000 iPhone 5s through brick and mortar retail.

That includes around 15,000 sold through carrier outlets, making for a “robust” launch according to market watchers speaking to the Shanghai Daily, and adds to the 300,000 pre-orders seen through Apple’s China Unicom alone, which the carrier itself reported earlier this week. China Telecom wasn’t as transparent about its overall pre-order numbers but a Beijing subsidiary did reveal amazing 5,000 reservations for Apple’s new smartphone.

Other outlets also report strong iPhone 5 sales, including 100,000 pre-orders from home appliance retailer Suning, which also sold 20,000 handsets through its retail channels in China. It’s hard to compare this to data from previous launches, as last year riots halted sales early with the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4 sold 60,000 units (across the entire country, not just in Shanghai) on launch day, however, with over 200,000 pre-orders through China Unicom, then the exclusive iPhone carrier in the country. The 3GS did far worse, netting 100,000 sales only after six weeks of availability, but it also came to China two years after it had been available in the U.S.

Jay Yarow at Business Insider points out some reasons why this launch appears on the surface to be weaker than others have in the past, including the implementation of a tightly regulated reservation system by Apple to defray the kind of trouble it ran into with the 4S, and also to prevent grey market resale. Apple is also using a lot more third-party resale partners than it has in the past, and as noted above, buyers seem to be flocking to those outlets.

This launch is definitely a much more muted affair than what we saw last year, but those proclaiming that they’re a sign of a weak opening in China could be jumping to conclusions before all the data is on the table.

Microsoft launches Socl into Beta, brings the part(ies) to social networking

Microsoft launches Socl into Beta, throws its federa into the social networking ring

Microsoft has unleashed Socl into beta for all comers to probe, bringing it out of the experimental stages and a step closer to a full-fledged site. We first heard about the project back in July when it was dubbed Tulalip, and MS Research’s Fuse Labs officially launched it internally and into some universities back in October last year. The site carries the Windows 8 tile-like look, and Fuse says that imagery is emphasized over “blue links” for search, helping democratize the site “even for people who speak different languages.” That lets you find others via posts, a people gallery, or someone’s page — where new posts, people and interests can be viewed all at once. A nav bar allows articles to be created by topics like web, videos or news, and users can create “parties,” where they can chat, create playlists or watch videos with others in a similar fashion to Google Hangouts. The project was coded using Redmond’s Java-hued Typescript to allow for rapid coding changes, according to Fuse’s blog in the source below. To try it out for yourself, check the “more coverage” link.

Nintendo TVii will launch with the Wii U in Japan on December 8th, IR remote costs $1

Nintendo’s Wii U has yet to launch in Japan, but over there it’s been revealed that the innovative Nintendo TVii app will be available when the console launches December 8th. Interestingly, the IR remote functionality that we’ve already seen packed in will cost 100 yen ($1.21) from Nintendo’s eShop. The TV guide data will be pulled from Rovi’s G-Guide service, ready to pull up even when you’re not using the console, or in the middle of a TV show or video game. We still don’t have an exact release date for the i.TV-based feature in North America (it’s due in “select” European regions next year) but at least gamers can enjoy their Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and YouTube access until then.

Microsoft’s Greater China VP says Windows Phone 7.8 to launch in the ‘coming weeks’

Microsoft's Greater China VP says Windows Phone 78 to launch in the 'coming weeks'

Sure, Microsoft has already delivered its new Windows Phone 8 OS to the masses, but the WP7.8 release details, on the other hand, have been extremely minimal since we learned about the upgrade earlier this year. Well, according to Microsoft’s Greater China Vice President, Windows Phone 7.8 will be hitting the Chinese market in the coming weeks, adding that there’s an honest belief both numerical versions (maybe more?) of Redmond’s mobile OS could easily live alongside each other in this country. Still, in the “coming weeks” could mean anything, although rumors around the web suggest the 7.8 version could make its official debut as early as next month — which goes perfectly on par with previous whispers of an eventual launch by the end of 2012. We’ll have to wait and see.

Jolla shows off Sailfish mobile OS in official video, pushes speed, multitasking

Jolla shows off Sailfish mobile OS, promises 'effortless multitasking,' speed galore

As promised, Jolla has shown off its newly launched Sailfish OS today, and said that UI will be all about speed and multitasking, while also cutting down on the finger dancing required to use it. The experience will start from the homescreen, where users will be able to control music playback or end a call using a “pulley” menu system without needing to open the respective apps. The Finnish startup also said that “many” Android apps would run on Sailfish handsets without modification, though a simple port would be required for best operation. Jolla foresees the software running not only smartphones from hardware players like new partner ST-Ericsson, but also tablets, smart TVs and in-car systems, for instance. To see it for yourself, check out the official video after the break.

Oppo to unveil Find 5 in Beijing on December 12th, but we all know what’s coming

Oppo

We see what you did there, Oppo: a triple-12 date for the introduction of its next flagship phone, the Find 5. You’d think it’d be a tough act to follow after the Chinese company’s crazy slim Finder from this summer, but as CEO Tony Chen’s already teased previously, his next product will boast a five-inch 1080p (441ppi) display along with a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064. It sure sounds a lot like HTC’s Droid DNA, but we shall have to wait until the Beijing event to see what Oppo’s “fifth element” actually looks like, as well as to see what other surprises it may have for us, so stay tuned.

Wii U gets midnight launch November 18th at Nintendo World Store

Care to be one of the first to buy a Wii U this weekend? Then start layering on the outerwear, swallowing that pride and making your way to Nintendo’s flagship Rockefeller Plaza store in New York City. Starting at midnight this Saturday, the company will begin selling its next-gen console along with other “premium items” to the extreme fanpersons in attendance. And as a special treat for whomever’s waiting at the front of the line, NOA’s prez, Reggie Fils-Aime, will be there to hand over that very first console – effectively doubling your bragging rights. So, if you like your launch day cold and a little bit crazy (yes, there will be folks walking around with Mii heads), November 18th’s one to mark down in the calendar.

Nexus 4 and 10 hit Australian Google Play store first, $20 Nexus 4 bumpers appear (update: Europe too)

Nexus 4 and 10 hit Australian Google Play store first, $20 Nexus 4 bumpers appear

While we wait for Google’s latest to hit the virtual shelves in our neck of the woods, Australian buyers have already seen the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 go on sale, appearing around noon locally. AusDroid reports the 16GB Nexus 4 went out of stock in just 22 minutes, followed by the 8GB version and 32GB Nexus 10. additionally, Android Central reports that official bumpers for the Nexus 4 have appeared in the Google Play store. We didn’t have problems with our review units but since the LG-built handset is rocking glass front and back they may be the difference between a close call and a sob story — friends who’ve smashed an iPhone 4 (or more than one) likely have relevant tales to share. Readers have emailed saying Google Play customer service reps indicated new Nexus sales will start at noon ET here as well, but without official word we’d probably just keep an eye on our inbox / clicking that refresh key to be safe.

Update: Sales appear to have gone live for customers in Europe, specifically UK and Spain, right about…now (3AM ET), those that can actually pull up the site at the moment may be able to get a purchase through.

Update 2: Google has confirmed that UK stock of the Nexus 4 has already been exhausted just hours after going on sale.

[Thanks, Jeffrey Powell]

Ballmer says Surface RT sales off to ‘modest’ start (update: Microsoft clarifies)

Microsoft CEO Ballmer braces shareholders for a 'fundamental shift,' more of its own devices in the future

Microsoft’s been holding Surface for Windows RT sales figures close to its chest so far, but CEO Steve Ballmer has allowed in an interview with Le Parisien that the much ballyhooed tablet is off to a “modest” start. The bombastic exec gave that appraisal while touting the imminent arrival of the tab’s higher-powered sibling, Surface for Windows 8 Pro, though he didn’t elaborate further. After all the cake it’s no doubt lavished marketing the slate, we’ll have to see if the software giant finds the hardware game tough to swallow.

Update: Microsoft says Le Parisien missed the true emphasis of Ballmer’s quote in a summary of its online article (which appeared prior to the full interview), and gave us the following statement:

When asked about Surface, Steve’s use of the term “modest” was in relation to the company’s approach in ramping up supply and distribution of Surface with Windows RT, which has only been available via our online store and certain Microsoft retail stores in the U.S. While our approach has been modest, Steve notes the reception to the device has been “fantastic” which is why he also stated that “soon, it will be available in more countries and in more stores.”

Of course, until we see some hard figures, we’ll have to take Redmond’s word for that sunny assessment of the Surface RT’s fortunes to date. And of course, when we have further details of a more widespread rollout, you’ll be the first to know.
