Nexus 7 3G reportedly fast incoming

Google is readying a Nexus 7 3G version, adding cellular connectivity to the 7-inch ASUS-made tablet, according to insider whispers. The new model will be officially launched in around six weeks, MoDaCo‘s tipster insists, with hardware identical to the currently shipping Nexus 7 bar the new radio.

Although the Nexus 7 was widely praised for its $199 sticker price, dramatically undercutting rivals such as Apple’s iPad, the absence of a 3G/4G version left some mobile tableteers frustrated. Instead, only WiFi/Bluetooth models were offered, able to tether to smartphones and mobile hotspots, but otherwise unable to connect while on the move.

According to the source, ASUS is currently ramping up production of the new model. Demand for the $199 tablet has been strong, seeing Google forced to freeze new orders shortly after the slate went on sale.

Pricing and availability for the 3G Nexus 7 have not been confirmed, and nor is is clear whether Google and ASUS will opt for 3G connectivity such as HSPA/HSPA+ or 4G like LTE. We wouldn’t be surprised to see a roughly $50-70 mark-up in return for the cellular modem, however.

AMD’s top-end Trinity desktop chip could cost just $130, the same as a budget Core i3

AMD's topend Trinity desktop chip could cost $130, the same as Intel's cheapest Core i3

You can’t get a Core i3 on Newegg right now for much less than $130 — a sum that’ll put you almost at the bottom of the Ivy Bridge league with a dual-core processor, 3MB cache and HD 2500 (i.e. not HD 4000) integrated graphics. That’s why it’s interesting to see these leaked AMD Trinity prices over at retailer BLT. If they’re accurate, they indicate that the same amount of cash might afford a top-end Trinity A10 processor with overclockable 3.8GHz quad-cores, 4MB cache and vastly superior Radeon HD 7660D graphics. At the other end of AMD’s range, a dual-core A4-5300 APU could cost as little as $60. The only catch we can see — aside from the issue of accuracy — is that by the time these processors actually become available rival Intel may well have seen fit to adjust its own prices. In fact, Chipzilla just launched some new Ivy Bridge processors over the weekend that brought the cost of entry down to $117 — which goes to show that nothing stands still for long. Head past the break for some official gaming benchmark claims about the A10, or see More Coverage for extras.

Nokia RM-581 Columbus Harmattan prototype leaked

The folks over at MyNokiaBlog received this particular tip in their inbox, depicting a prototype of yore that hailed all the way from 2009, where it was powered by MeeGo-Harmattan, otherwise known as Maemo6. This particular prototype does bring back memories of the Nokia N8 styling, but assuming it is a blast from the past (3 years thereabouts to be exact), you could say that the Nokia N8’s form factor was inspired by this RM-581 Columbus prototype instead!

The RM-581 Columbus’ branding points towards the device’s leaning towards the landscape orientation, complete with the N-Series branding, making some even wonder whether this was originally supposed to be the N8 before the model that arrived at the market. Under the camera lens, it mentions “AF 12MP” which should more or less be the same camera module as found in the Nokia N8. You can check out additional photos of the leaked Nokia RM-581 Columbus prototype photos in the gallery right after the jump. (more…)

iPhone 5 gets revamped earphones in new video

When Apple unveils the iPhone 5 at that rumored September 12 event, it will apparently be doing so with a new set of earphones. A video showing off these new earphones has popped up on Vietnamese site Tinhte.vn, giving us a look at what may come packaged with the next generation iPhone. If this is the real deal, then it would appear that Apple’s earbuds have undergone a pretty big redesign.

The video you see below originally had sound, but a new version without any audio has since been uploaded in the original’s place. Luckily, MacRumors was able to translate the audio before that switch occurred. Apparently these new earphones are smaller than Apple’s traditional earbuds (though only slightly, judging by the comparison pictures), and it seems that they would fit the ear better than the older round shape. It isn’t exactly a secret that Apple’s earbuds weren’t the most comfortable things to wear, and indeed, Tinhte says that these new ones don’t hurt when put them in your ears.

Tinhte also says that each earpiece is made in such a way that it looks like it’s all one “fully integrated, single unit.” This means that these earphones might not come apart as easily, which should be welcomed change since the old earbuds could feel a little fragile at times. Have a look at the video below to get a first glimpse at what may just be the iPhone’s redesigned earphones:

If Apple is planning a new design for the next iPhone like some of the rumors claim, it wouldn’t surprise us at all to see the earbuds undergo a reboot as well. The last few weeks have brought a pretty steady stream of parts leaks, and in just 10 short days we should be finding out if any of them were legitimate. Keep it here at SlashGear for more information, and be sure to check out our timeline below for the latest iPhone 5 rumors.

Next Apple earbuds potentially sighted in Vietnam, may fix an iconic design (video)

Next Apple earbuds get potential sighting in Vietnam, may fix an iconic design video

The pack-in earbuds for iPhones and iPods have been among the most recognizable of technology symbols for more than a decade… just not for their technical merits. They’re notorious for slipping out of wearers’ ears and having a mediocre sound next to just about anything else you can buy. If Tinhte‘s own discovery in Vietnam is authentic, Apple might be breaking with another one of its longstanding traditions this year by redesigning those earpieces for the better. Gone are the usual buds that only vaguely aim towards your ear canals. Instead, what’s on show has oval tips very loosely resembling those of the Klipsch Image S4 II, and slots in at an angle to fit more directly into the canals — not to mention more comfortably, based on early tests. We can’t guarantee that these headphones are more than just the products of an ambitious third-party manufacturer, but Tinhte has had a good track record for snagging pre-release Apple gear, and that “Designed by Apple in California Assembled in Vietnam” lettering would reduce the possibilities to either a good KIRF or the real thing. One way or the other, we could know the truth soon enough.

LG Intuition 4G LTE may become available on Verizon September 6th

LG Intuition may launch on Verizon September 6th

The day of September 6th is gearing up to be a rather hefty one for Verizon: earlier we reported that the Samsung Galaxy Stellar is slated to launch on that date, and it’s also the day after Motorola unveils its latest lineup for Big Red. Why not throw in another device that we’ve heard so much about, such as the LG Intuition? Indeed, docs detailing the CDMA-clad Optimus Vu is now beginning to make the rounds in Verizon’s internal system — and its intended launch date is among the trove of treasures to be found within. According to the docs, we should expect to see the 5-inch device available online in time for the 6th, while all channels won’t be ready to go until the 10th. We can’t imagine that too many people will be upset over having to wait another four days, however.

In terms of specs, here’s what we can anticipate from the Intuition: Ice Cream Sandwich, a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8660 (Snapdragon S3) processor paired with MDM9600 LTE modem and 1GB RAM, Gorilla Glass, a 5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1024 x 768, 15 hours of talk time, 8MP rear camera with 1.3MP front-facing cam and no microSD expandable storage option. Ultimately, the Intuition is Verizon’s variant of the Optimus Vu, and boasts that commonality right down to the components and design — you won’t find much difference in specs, weight or dimensions between the two. We’ve compiled a few images for your enjoyment, so head below to see. As before, we had to be creative in how we treated these images to protect the identity of everyone involved.

Purported HTC Accord Windows Phone schema leaked on Twitter

HTC Accord images purportedly leaked from Windows Phone ROM

While certain other manufacturers claim a lot of the Windows Phone column inches, there are other players in the game. An image that recently popped up on Twitter reminds us that HTC is also a supporter of Microsoft’s mobile OS. The picture above claims to be a possible schema for a forthcoming handset, which the poster believes to be the HTC Accord. The account belongs to a prolific XDA-Developer user with a history of Windows Phone ROMS, so it’s entirely possible this was found somewhere along the way. Likewise, though, we’ll have to take this with the requisite amount of salt. There’s not much in the way of specification to be gleaned here, either, but at the least we can get a sense of what the design style might be like going forward. We just need to wait now for the official product launch event to join the ever-growing list.

iPhone 5 HD photos appear with specific measurements

If you were looking for a set of high-definition photos of the new iPhone 5 (or whatever they’ll end up calling it) next to the iPhone 4 AND the iPhone 3G, today’s you’re lucky day. Today a collection of photos have been revealed by SoHu.com where they’ve gotten their hands on what appears to be an iPhone 5 case model – handed out to 3rd party accessory manufacturers so that they might know the shape and size of the device before it’s released. Here you’ll see the next iPhone – or this heavily trafficked model that certainly appears to be the iPhone 5 – next to a couple of its predecessors as well.

The folks at Sohu have gotten their hands on a measured model of Apple‘s newest iPhone as well – showing it to be 124.46 × 58.58 × 7.41mm. They compare this set of measurements to the iPhone 4/4S which come in at 115.2 × 58.6 × 9.3mm. This tells us that the new iPhone is almost exactly the same width of the iPhone 4/4S but is certainly taller by about 10mm. This also shows that the new iPhone is just about 2mm thinner than the previous iPhone, as you can also see in the picture below.

This image also shows that the new iPhone will be working with much slimmer sections of glass on top of and on back of the device – though we’ve seen here and before that the back of the device will very likely be mostly aluminum with a couple sections of glass at the top and bottom for signal strength. The sides of the device appear to have two section breaks and the same sized volume buttons as well as screen lock – and the screen lock has a slightly smaller section of red coloring whilst locked, too.

The iPhone 5 will very likely take on a whole lot smoother appearance as far as individual bits and pieces than we expected when the first “renders” were shown off weeks ago. Here we’re seeing an iPhone that seems downright Apple-worthy – realistic, that is. Have a peek at the timeline below to see additional important news blasts and/or tips and leaks in the history of the release of this device and stay tuned for more! The next-generation iPhone has been rumored to be making its first appearance next month!

Samsung Galaxy Stellar slated for September 6 launch at Verizon

We’ve already heard a little bit about the mysterious Samsung Galaxy Stellar 4G LTE, but today the floodgates have been opened. Engadget has been in contact with sources that claim the new budget handset will launch at Verizon on September 6. Strangely, neither Verizon nor Samsung have said anything about the device yet, but Engadget’s source was able to provide documentation that dishes plenty of details on the phone’s specs.

As you might expect, we’re not working with too much in the Stellar. We’ve got unnamed 1.2GHz dual-core processor under the hood, the phone is running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, and everything will play out on a 4-inch 800×480 WVGA screen. The whole unit weighs 4.73 ounces, comes equipped with a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and a 3.2-megapixel rear-facing camera, and offers 4GB of internal storage.

So, it isn’t great, but this phone is obviously meant for those who are entering the world of smartphones for the first time. The proof? The Samsung Galaxy Stellar comes complete with a “starter mode.” This isn’t the first time we’ve seen an Android phone offer such a mode, as the Pantech MARAUDER also features a stater mode for new users to take advantage of. We don’t know too much about the Stellar’s starter mode, but a leaked listing describes it as a “new, simple way to interact Access apps and control device settings with ease.”

The Samsung Galaxy Stellar is rumored to cost $100 if you put your John Hancock on a two-year contract, and if this latest rumor proves true, its launch is less than a week away. If that’s the case, then someone at Verizon or Samsung should be talking soon. Then again, since the Stellar doesn’t really have much to write home about, it may just get a silent launch. We shall see, but in the meantime, have a look at our timeline to see what’s going on with Verizon and Samsung these days.

Nokia Lumia 820 prototype breaks cover in photos, confirms little else

Nokia 820 prototype breaks cover in photos, confirms little else

Renders, shmenders. According to Coolxap.com what you see above is a real-world prototype of the Nokia Lumia 820 — aka Nokia Arrow. As well as some tantalizing hardware shots, we get a sneaky glimpse at that all important “About phone” page. All we can see, though, is that it’s running Windows Phone 8 (shock) and has only 335MB of RAM? Though, being a prototype, that’s likely to change. Sadly little else of note, but it’s at least good to see that while the mock-ups were close, the real thing has a little more going for it.
