Alleged Galaxy S IV pictures and specs appear on Chinese website

We’re in countdown mode to Samsung‘s event in New York City tomorrow, during which the Korean company will launch its highly anticipated Galaxy S IV smartphone. The handset has been the source of numerous leaks and rumors (which you can check out in the Timeline after the jump), the latest of which has appeared just hours ahead of its unveiling on the Chinese forum it168.

The alleged Galaxy S IV featured in the leak, which you can see in the gallery below, is said to be a dual-SIM sample model. It first appeared on it168 earlier this week, but the latest round of images give a better look at the handset, including a handful of specs to go alongside the new batch of pictures.

The plastic backing on the phone features a crosshatched texture, while the home key is said to be embossed, with the entire unit measuring in at only 7.7mm in thickness and weighing 138 grams. The screen is an expected 4.99-inch full HD 1080p display, and inside there’s a reported 8-core 1.8GHz Exynos 5410 processor accompanied by 2GB of RAM.

The internal storage is a decent 16GB, and there’s the ever-present microSD slot for expansion. The battery has a 2600mAh capacity. Also revealed were a few software features, the most interesting of which is the ability to hover a finger over a portion of the display to pull up an S-pen stylus effect. Are the specs spot-on? We’ll find out tomorrow at Samsung’s event in NYC, which we’ll be covering live, so stay tuned!

More Galaxy S4 cases leak on eve of Samsung’s big reveal

Samsung’s big Galaxy S4 reveal is almost upon us, but that hasn’t stopped the steady drip of leaks which today includes a new set of cases for the flagship smartphone. The colorful covers, 98-percent trusted” from UK retailer MobileFun‘s source, are unbranded, but they do fit in with what leaks we’ve seen in the past week or so about the expected form-factor for the new handset.

S4 case

Whereas earlier indications pointed to a squared-off S4, stepping back to the aesthetic of the Galaxy S II in some ways, and away from the rounded edges of the Galaxy Note II, these shells – along with the latest batch of chatter – hint that won’t be the case. Instead, we’ve seen Samsung itself tease with a snippet of the Galaxy S4′s curvaceous shoulder, while more unofficial rumor-mill-grist have shown a phone that looks strikingly similar to Samsung’s existing range, plastic case and all.

S4 case 2

This new lot doesn’t stray too far from any of that, and in fact – though we’re expecting a bigger display, up to 5-inches from the 4.7-inch Galaxy S III – the general aesthetic is almost identical. The speaker and LED flash do seem to have shifted somewhat, though, with the flash now underneath the camera lens (believed to be a 13-megapixel shooter) and the speaker down near the bottom edge.

We’ll have to wait and see as to whether these accessories are legitimate or not, but there isn’t long to go before we know for sure. Samsung’s event kicks off at 7pm ET in New York City on Thursday, and SlashGear will be there to bring you all the news as it happens.

Unannounced Motorola Android phone surfaces, isn’t the fabled ‘X phone’ (video)

Unannounced Motorola Android phone surfaces, isn't the fabled 'X phone' video

The fine folks at Tinhte have gotten their mitts on a Motorola-made Android phone that hasn’t made its official debut. Right out of the gate, the outlet notes that it’s not the rumored “X phone” since it’s missing a large, stunning screen that would rival other flagship gear, but the specs still give it a fair amount of horsepower. Behind the device’s roughly 4-inch 720p screen hide a Snapdragon S4 Pro (or better), an Adreno 320 GPU, 2GB of RAM and a 2,000mAh battery. On the outside, the smartphone sports a curved back reminiscent of the HTC One, a black finish and a thin bezel framing its display. Tinhte reports that the handset carries a XT912A model number, so we reckon it could be a cousin of the Droid RAZR, which is labeled as the XT912. Unknown Motorola Android smartphone appears in hands-on review

An unannounced name-unknown Android smartphone from Motorola has appeared over at Tihn te, where it is given the full hands-on treatment. There’s a murmur of speculation that this could perhaps be the X Phone, but that’s doubtful given the relatively lackluster specs. You can check out a gallery of the handset, as well as a video, after the break.

motorola 1

According to the review, this Motorola handset features a slim, tapered body, which you can see in the photos below. The screen is a large 4.65-inches with a 720p resolution. Inside, users will find an Adreno 320, Snapdragon S4, 2GB of RAM, and a 2200mAh battery. Likewise, it’s running Android.

As for the phone itself, Tihn te says it is constructed from plastic and feels solid in the hand, with thin bevels and a slightly rounded back. The speaker on the back has a drilled-holes design, which is reported to be of lower quality than that of the One X and Lumia 920. Not much else is known, but we’ll certainly be keeping an eye out and will update you when we know more.

Given the specs, all signs point towards a solid mid-range handset, with the lower-end screen resolution being the feature that most separates it from the rumored X Phone from Google, which is said to feature a 5-inch display with full HD 1080 resolution. Still, it looks like a noteworthy Motorola handset will be hitting shelves in the relatively near future.

Samsung Galaxy S III to be updated with wireless charging and HD display

Samsung’s Galaxy S III has sold massive quantities, hitting the 30 million mark back in November 2012. In light of this, the Korean company will be releasing an updated version of the handset, something it has done with other smartphones for smaller markets. The updated version will include, among other things, an HD display.

samsung_galaxy_s_III_review_sg_0-540x3861

Samsung doesn’t typically roll out updated versions of its handsets in the US, but given the Galaxy S III’s rampant popularity, it would seem the company wants to take the device as far as it will go. Other handsets that have been revamped include the Galaxy S II Plus and the Galaxy S Advance back in 2012.

The information surfaced on Twitter courtesy of journalist Eldar Murtazin, who dropped a tweet with a few details earlier today and confirmed the Galaxy S III’s impending revamp. Although it isn’t an official statement, Murtazin has posted correct information in the past, including recently that the Galaxy S IV would be launched on March 14th in NYC.

According to a Google translation of the tweet, the refreshed Galaxy S III will feature an updated HD display, although it isn’t definitive if it will be 1080p. The battery will also get a boost to a 2400mAh capacity, and even better will feature wireless charging, something that was supposed to be a regular feature for the handset. The updated handset is said to be slated for arrival after the S IV is unveiled.

Google Now for iPhone and iPad video leaked on YouTube

A video that is said to be of Google Now for the iPhone and iPad was leaked onto YouTube earlier today, only to be pulled a short while later – not before it was downloaded, it would seem. The video has since been reappeared on the video sharing website, where it is still available for all to enjoy. You can check it out after the jump.

Screenshot from 2013-03-13 01:37:53

The video surfaced over at Engadget, where a tipster made its existence known. As they point out, a careful ear will note that the voice in the alleged promotional video sounds the same as the one featured in official Google Now promotional videos. That and the fact that it was pulled shortly after surfacing publicly gives it an air of legitimacy.

According to the video, using the iOS version of Google Now is as simple as “swiping up.” It provides all the goodies current users enjoy, including contextual data cards and alerts. This leak follows a non-functional tease of Google Now on Chromium, indicating that the service is at least finding its way to the desktop.

Of course, while it is nice to believe this to be a legit foreshadowing of what is to come, there are some other possibilities, the most of obvious one of which is forgery (although it would be quite a high-quality fake if that is the case). And it is also possible that this low-res promotional video shows a project that Google toyed around with but ultimately abandoned. For now, at least, the search engine giant hasn’t commented either way.

Alleged Google Now for iOS video leaks on YouTube, is promptly pulled

iOS fans jealous of Jelly Bean’s creepy Google Now might finally have something to get excited about. An October update to the Google Search app finally delivered an updated voice recognition experience to Apple’s platform, but sadly alerts and contextual cards of data were nowhere to be seen. Of course, Mountain View has never been one to keep its wares to a single platform, and many expect that it’s only a matter of time before Now makes its proper debut on iOS. Those that like to dip their toes in both ponds might be interested in a video brought to our attention by a tipster earlier today.

The clip, embedded after the break, is allegedly a low resolution version of a promotional video for Google Now on iPhone and iPad. The video has since been pulled from YouTube and appears to feature the same voice actress as the original Now announcement (which you’ll also find after the break for comparison). Supposedly, Now will be accessible in an upcoming iOS app update simply by swiping up from the main screen. Of course, there’s always the chance that is an impressive fake or even a canceled project that’s only being leaked now. We’ve reached out to Google for comment, but even if the search giant remains silent, we’re confident the truth will be known soon enough.

[Thanks, Jason]

Is this the Samsung Galaxy S IV or is it in disguise again?

Is this the Samsung Galaxy S IV or is it in disguise again

Mere days before Samsung unveils its newest phone, a Chinese forum post has offered some purported shots of the Galaxy S IV. Now it’s worth mentioning from the outset that Samsung plays a good game of subterfuge. It masked the Galaxy S III ahead of its reveal last year in a blockier plastic frame and it could be that this phone, with a very Note-esque face and outline, is also a filler ahead of the final reveal. It could also be yet another phone that will slot in elsewhere in Samsung’s ever-expanding Galaxy family, or even a Shenzhen knock-off that’s jumped the gun — we spotted that the front-facing camera hole doesn’t quite align properly.

However, with that said, there’s still plenty here to muse on. The shots appear to be taken in a phone unlocking shop somewhere in China, with this GT-i9502 model apparently bound for carrier China Unicom. Interestingly (at least for a flagship), it appears to be a dual-SIM version, with the mono-SIM version apparently picking up model number GT-i9500 — a number that would fit in with the series so far. According to the leak, it’s running a fresh version of Android (4.2.1) with a 1080p display (no word on dimensions just yet), 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera on the back. The mention of a “5410” CPU suggests it’s Samsung’s Exynos Octa chip powering it and while AnTuTu might only recognize that as a quad-core chip, we noted during our hands-on with the new chipset that only four cores were being used at a time. We’re still hoping Samsung’s final design pushes the envelope a little further than a repositioned camera sensor and a new glossy texture — we’ve added a shot of this after the break. Rest assured, Jeremy will be letting us in on the big secret later this week.

Is this a Samsung Galaxy S4 test mule?

All eyes are on Samsung’s Galaxy S4 “Unpacked” event this Thursday to see what the company has for Android addicts, but new leaks in China suggest it’ll be a powerhouse at least. What’s said to be a dual-SIM Galaxy S4 for China Unicom has been spotted at forum 52Samsung, complete with some supposed benchmarking results tipping a quadcore 1.8GHz processor and Full HD display among other things. However, the Note II-alike casing may well be a red herring.

samsung_galaxy_s4_mule_leak_1

The design certainly doesn’t stray too far from Samsung’s existing phablet, though the GT-I9502 – as the Antutu testing would have it – is presumably smaller than the Note II. It also doesn’t look much like what we’d expect given recent case leaks, which have indicated a return to the crisper, squared-off aesthetic of the Galaxy S II.

samsung_galaxy_s4_mule_leak_3

Then again, Samsung is no stranger to disguising its prototypes in order to try to keep some secrets until launch day. The Galaxy S III was a masterclass in secrecy, with Samsung using fake casings, highly limited access, and a code of silence to make sure nobody – even carrier partners – saw the final phone until the South Korean firm was ready.

If this really is a Galaxy S4 prototype, then, it could well be a disguised one: Samsung may have crafted a fake shell into which it could put real internal components so as to allow for partner testing. By keeping it so close to the existing Note II/Galaxy S III style, it wouldn’t be spotted as something more special while out in the wild.

samsung_galaxy_s4_mule_leak_2

According to Antutu, the phone has an Imagination Technologies PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU with OpenGL ES 2.0 support, and runs Android 4.2.1. 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera are also indicated; that all fits in with previously leaked specifications.

There’s a lot riding on it, either way, and not just for Samsung. Other Android OEMs – not to mention Apple – are watching the Galaxy S4 closely, as the handset’s predecessor swiftly eclipsed most other phones running Google’s OS. With HTC pinning its hopes on the HTC One, for instance, the company will be hoping its own innovations – such as the “UltraPixel” camera – still hold up to scrutiny once whatever Samsung has prepared is revealed.

We’ll know for sure in just a few days time, with SlashGear headed to New York City on Thursday, March 14, to see exactly what the new flagship can do. Join us then for all the details!

Lenovo S920 and S820 leak, could pack Android 4.2.1, quad-core CPUs and dual-SIM slots

Lenovo's S920 and S820 leak out in blurrycam shots, could pack Android Jelly Bean, quadcore CPUs and dualSIM slots

Lenovo’s still far from a boldfaced name when it comes to Android smartphones. Its Clover Trail+-packing K900 aside, the company’s mobile focus tends to skew towards the lower-end. And so it seems the company’s prepping two new Jelly Bean handsets for the Asian market, the purported S920 and S820, judging by a few leaked blurrycam shots over on MyDrivers.com. From what we can see, the devices appear to share a similar slim, rounded edge design language with a rear-facing camera protruding prominently on back. According to the rumored specs, both are tipped to rely on MediaTek’s quad-core Cortex-A7 SoC, include dual-SIM support and run Android 4.2.1 (skinned, of course). It’s not clear what resolution Lenovo has in store for the phones, but if the S920’s 5.3-inch screen size proves true, it’s likely to be of the 720p variety. The S820 is more of an unknown, but the Chinese site maintains it’s meant for a more fashionable, female demo. Here’s to hoping it launches with a charm dongle. Remember that?
