iPad 5 to be smaller than usual, thinner bezel on the way

Earlier today, we pointed out some photos of what look to be the shell of the iPad 5 right up next to the iPad mini that we all know about. Nothing seemed too off at that point, until people started to notice that the size difference between the two tablets shown in the photos wasn’t that great. It appears that the iPad 5 will come with the same 9.7-inch display, but Apple may slap it into a smaller package.

ipad59to5mac-580x442

In the size comparison photo below, the iPad 5 will be slightly shorter and significantly narrower than the 4th-gen iPad, but as far as we know, it’ll have the same 9.7-inch display, hinting at the fact that the iPad 5 may come with a thinner bezel all the way around, similar to the bezel design of the iPad mini.

compare

It’s not all that surprising, though, and it makes sense that Apple is looking to unify the look and design between the iPad and the iPad mini, by making the larger iPad a bit smaller and sleeker and giving it a black matte finish on the back. We have to say that we’re big fans of uniformity, so this comes as a happy surprise.

The iPad 5 is said to be thinner than past iterations, although we’re not sure if it’ll surpass the thinness of the iPad 2, which is Apple’s thinness iPad so far. Other than the design change, everything else should be relatively the same. Volume buttons, the screen lock/mute switch, and the power button all look to be in the same locations, and it’ll obviously come with Apple’s new Lightning connector, as well as a rear-facing camera along with a front shooter.

Purported images of budget iPhone 5 for China surface

A plastic budget iPhone is quickly becoming the stuff of myths, yet it is as persistent as ever, surfacing despite Apple’s Phil Schiller’s insistence that such a device will never happen. The rumors have reached a new level, with the folks over at iLounge publishing what are purported to be leaked images of a budget iPhone 5 made of plastic and destined for China.

5x

The budget iPhone 5 rumors have stated that such a device would be constructed from plastic and would cost less than its higher-end counterpart. Such is said of the device pictured, which is supposed to be of a plastic iPhone created for China, where such a device would be well received (as it would elsewhere). The handset is said to resemble a smorgasbord of other Apple devices.

The alleged budget iPhone is said to be slightly larger than the iPhone 5 by about half a millimeter in height and width. While the device looks like the iPhone 5 in one image, it is said to actually resemble the iPhone 5, the classic iPod, and the 5th gen iPod Touch mixed together. The device has a 4-inch display, the bottom is said to be like that of the iPod Touch, and its overall design is said to be close to the iPod classic.

The resolution is said to be 1,136 x 640, with the Gorilla Glass display being elevated a tad from the rest of the face similar to the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The rest of the body is said to be made from plastic. Aside from the design, little else about the handset is specified. The information is said to come from “reliable sources,” but as with all rumors, take this with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 images leak before MWC reveal

This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about Samsung’s rumored Galaxy Tab 3. Not too long ago, we were treated with another leak that revealed two different screen sizes that the company will shell out. Today, though, we’re seeing actual photos of the device that give us a better idea of what we’re in for before its possible reveal at MWC next month.

Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-3-jpg

From the size and proportions of the tablet seen in the photos, we’re guessing it’s the 7-inch variant of the Galaxy Tab 3 (with the other being a 10-inch model), but nothing in the images point to one or the other. We’re guessing that both sizes of the tablet will be identical in design for the most part.

Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-3-box-jpg

Both of the photos include the actual device and the box that it comes in, along with a model number and everything. However, the full model number isn’t completely legible, but it starts with “GT-P,” which is what most Samsung tablets usually start out with. The photos also don’t show the device on or running, so we can’t get a closer look at the UI just yet.

So far, no specs have been revealed, other than the 7-inch and 10-inch size variants. Until we see more leaks of photos or even video, it looks like we may have to wait until Mobile World Congress in Barcelona before we get a real glimpse at the thing. Of course, we’ll be there live covering the event, so be sure to stick around for MWC coverage.

BlackBerry Z10 press images leak out

We’ve already seen plenty of leaked shots of RIM‘s upcoming BlackBerry Z10 handset, but this is the first time that we’re seeing what look to be official press images of the device. There’s not a lot of new information here, but we finally get to see RIM’s new device in proper lighting, even if the images are only renders.

BBZfLJJCQAAp8Fv

The leak comes from the EVLeaks Twitter account, who posted the leaked press shots yesterday. While we’ll still keep a skeptical mind (as with any rumor and leak), these press photos look like the real deal, and EVLeaks has been quite reputable in the past with leaked shots, so we’re pretty certain these will be the ones hitting the front pages of carrier websites.

What’s even more revealing about these “official” press photos is that this is most likely what the final product will look like when RIM officially unveils the new phone come January 30. In the past, we’ve certainly seen our fair share of leaked photos, and while those may have just been prototypes, these press shots reveal the final product.

Overall, we definitely like the design. It’s nothing too special by any means, but it’s sleek and stealthy, and it definitely has that BlackBerry feel to it. Since BlackBerry 10 seems to be a competent platform, we can’t see a reason why the Z10 wouldn’t be a success for RIM, but we’ll ultimately have to wait and see later this month.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 shows up in the wild

We’ve been hearing plenty of chatter about Samsung’s rumored 8-inch Galaxy Note tablet lately, and we’ve already seen plenty of leaks of the new tablet, as well as a hint from a Samsung exec that we should be seeing the new device at Mobile World Congress next month. However, we’re now seeing the tablet itself out in the wild in all its glory.

tab4_b_7733

Italian website DDay.it ended up getting a hold of some photos of the new device, where the tablet is actually being used by a patron out in the public without so much as a, “How do you do?” It’s said that this is the Galaxy Note 8.0 that Samsung may reveal at Mobile World Congress, and while we’re definitely excited for an 8-inch variant of the Note, the tablet looks pretty much like an enlarged Galaxy S III.

However, what’s perhaps particularly striking is the button layout. Samsung’s Galaxy tablets in the past have traditionally used on-screen buttons when Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich rolled around, but it looks like the new Galaxy Note 8.0 is a different story. Instead, it looks to have a physical home button, with two capacitive touch buttons.

The photos also suggest that the Galaxy Note 8.0 will have two cameras, one on the back and one on the front. Plus, there looks to be a speaker above its display, which we’ve seen before on the Galaxy Tab 7. Other than that, it’s rumored that the new tablet will have a 1280×800 resolution, a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and up to 32GB of internal storage with a microSD card for expandable opportunities.

ASUS MeMO Pad 10 details surface, 1.2GHz Tegra 3 and Jelly Bean tipped

We heard about the Eee Pad MeMO tablet from ASUS at CES a couple weeks ago. It’s essentially an Ice Cream Sandwich-equipped 7-inch tablet running a Tegra 3 chip and 1GB of RAM on the inside. However, we’re now hearing about a 10-inch version that will supposedly come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and a Tegra 3 chip clocked at 1.2GHz.

Screen Shot 2013-01-21 at 12.54.59 PM

The 10-inch display is said to have a resolution of 1280×800, which is the same resolution as the Nexus 7, so not a huge feature for this new tablet, but it is a budget device after all. We’re also looking at 16GB of internal storage, a 5MP rear-facing camera, and a 1.2MP front-facing camera — predictable specs that don’t seem too far off of what we’d expect. There’s even an unboxing video below that shows the rumored tablet in all its glory.

Like many devices out on the market currently, ASUS will offer the MeMO Pad 10 in a bevy of colors, including a gray/blue combo, pink, and white. There’s no word on pricing or availability, but it’s speculated that ASUS will announce the MeMO Pad 10 at Mobile World Congress next month in Barcelona.

It’s said that ASUS might price the upcoming 10-inch tablet at around €300, or $399 in US dollars. We already know that the Eee Pad MeMO will cost $249, so we’re prone to believe that the price point for this 10-inch variant will only be slightly more expensive than that. However, we don’t expect it to jump into $500 territory like the iPad or Nexus 10.

Microsoft Xbox 720 specs leak: 8-core CPU and 8GB of RAM

There have been no shortage of Xbox 720 rumors lately, and with E3 2013 just months away, we suppose there’s no better time for speculation than right now. Microsoft’s next gaming console is rumored to make an appearance at E3 this year, and Major Nelson himself (head of Xbox Live, Larry Hyrb) is even counting down the days until the big event. However, the latest on the rumor block is that the hardware specs of the new console have leaked out, and they look mighty impressive.

17_xbox360_gtsNonLiveEnabled_4CPCentered_L

According to the leaked specs, and if they turn out to be true, the Xbox 720 is going to be an absolute machine. According to VGleaks, who ended up snatching up all the details, the new Xbox will have an 8-core 1.6GHz processor, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, an 800MHz graphics card, a 6x Blu-ray drive, USB 3.0, and gigabit ethernet.

durango_arq1

Of course, the graphics is one of the most important aspects of a gaming console, and while we don’t know the exact brand and model of the graphics unit, we’re told its a custom D3D11.1 class processor clocked at 800MHz, with 12 shader cores providing a total of 768 threads. It’s said, that at peak performance, the GPU can “effectively issue 1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second.”

Of course, we’re skeptical, and you should be too. The source doesn’t really have a lengthy track record of any sort, but they’ve been posting up significantly lengthy spec lists for upcoming gaming consoles. Hopefully we’ll continue to find out more information on Microsoft’s latest console, but we’re most excited about E3 coming up in June, where we’ll hopefully see the new console in all its glory.

SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: January 21, 2013

This morning it’s leak city as the rumor mill starts spinning like a propeller before Mobile World Congress 2013, coming up sooner than you think! The iPhone Math has to be one of the most absurd of the collection, bringing with it a 4.8-inch display alongside the plastic iPhones tipped earlier this month. Sergey Brin has been riding the subway in NYC sporting Google Glass as we inch closer to the developer events in that city and down westward at the start of next month. BlackBerry will be bringing the heat with BlackBerry 10 at the end of this month as well, RIM changing the name now of App World to BlackBerry World in celebration it does seem.

The folks behind Memoto have delayed the life-logging camera but are adding in a digital compass for fun. Eric Schmidt and his daughter Sophie have been there and back again to nowhere less than North Korea. Real-life Mario Kart is being made real in a demonstration of RFID-tagged boosters throughout a real-deal course with go-carts – amazingly amazing! RIM’s own CEO has tipped the idea that they could sell their hardware devision after the launch of BlackBerry 10 – quite the pre-event note!

If you’ve not seen the HTC M7 in a set of supposedly real photographs, now’s your chance. If you’re living in the USA and love the PlayStation Store, you may be super gloriously happy to find that you can use PayPal there now as well as your cold hard cash. Intel is working non-stop at the moment to bring on technology that’ll hopefully help Stephen Hawking to continue to communicate as his body continues to deteriorate.

The lovely beast known as the Alfa Romeo 4C will be coming to the USA next year – that’s 12 months or more from now, so get out your crying eyes. The folks at EA and GlassLab have announced a student-friendly title by the name of SimCityEDU. Those of you familiar with the way we currently understand human DNA to be structured will find a quadruple helix DNA in a human cell to be quite the announcement via scientists at Cambridge University.

HTC M7 first real pictures leak out

We’ve been hearing a lot about HTC’s upcoming rumored flagship handset recently, and there’s definitely no shortage of renders and images of the new device. We’ve already seen a couple of rendered images of the new handset, as well as some screenshots of the Sense 5.0 UI. However, today we’re seeing actual, real photos of what is said to be the HTC M7.

nexusae0_wm_IMG_20130121_105044_thumb copy

What you see above is supposedly the HTC M7 in all its glory. It matches up fairly well with the newest renders that we saw over the weekend, save for a few minor changes between the two. And the homescreen looks to be the newest version of HTC’s Sense UI, version 5.0. Since we obviously can’t be certain that this is truly the M7, we’ll be keeping a skeptical mind until we hear an official announcement.

While this could very well be the M7, we can’t help but feel funny about the soft buttons below the display. The home button and back button are switched, and they sit particular close to the display, rather than being centered in the middle of the bezel on the bottom. The back of the device also has some minor changes from the renders we saw. The LED’s position is switched, the HTC logo is gloss black rather than a chrome, and the Beats logo doesn’t have the “Beats Audio” text underneath it.

Of course, this may just be an early prototype we’re seeing with our eyes, so it may not be the final version that we’ll hopefully see at Mobile World Congress next month in Barcelona. No other rumors have been outed as far as hardware specs go, since December. We’re still looking at an Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core chipset clocked at 1.7GHz with 2GB of RAM, and a 13MP camera on the back.

HTC M7 first full image leaks out, looks vaguely familiar

Look what we have here, folks. After months of rumors and no images to go along with them, we finally have what is said to be the HTC M7 in all its glory. We saw a slight glimpse of the device last week when a couple of screenshots were leaked, but this is the first image of the alleged M7 where we see it all.

HTC_M7_render

Be aware, though, that this is just a render, not an actual photo of the rumored device. Either way, it gives us a better idea of what HTC’s upcoming flagship may look like. The render comes from EVLeaks, which has been incredibly reliable in the past, so while we’ll still remain a bit skeptical, we wouldn’t be too surprised if this is real.

The render is said to be part of a short animation clip that teaches new owners how to install a SIM card. Then again, there’s a big lack of any kind of branding, so this may not be the exact design that HTC will use when the phone is expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress next month in Barcelona, Spain.

And yes, it looks strikingly similar to the iPhone 5, right down to the two-tone backing and the rounded corners, so if this actually turns out to be the design that HTC uses, I’m sure we’ll hear from Apple lawyers in no time. As far as for the M7, we’re looking at a 4.7-inch 1080p display with a 1.7GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM. There’s also supposedly going to be 32GB of internal storage, a 13MP f/2.0 rear camera, a 2MP front-facing camera, and a 2300mAh battery to power it all.
