PDP Afterglow Multi-HDMI Cable Adds Light-up Color-Coding

Do you often get bamboozled trying to figure out which cable is which when wiring up your home theater gear? While you could simply put color-coded dots on the cable ends, that’s just not nearly as cool or geeky as these new HDMI cables with light-up color-coding.

afterglow light up hdmi cable

Coming soon from PDP, The Afterglow is a 6-foot-long HDMI cable that group four cables into one. The light-up LED heads make it easy to identify which cable is connected to which device, and just looks cool when connected.

What’s not clear is how much slack you’ll get at each end of the cable – since not all of your devices are going to be that close together. I can only imagine that the other end of the cable has a bit more distance between the connectors, but we’ll have to wait until PDP releases the full specs – which I’m guessing will turn up during CES in early January 2013.

Small LG TVs to Get Smart TV and Wi-Fi?

I was digging around on the Wi-Fi Alliance website checking out the latest certified devices today when I came across an interesting batch of small displays from LG, all with Wi-Fi support built in.

lg wifi certified displays

It appears that a wide variety of LG’s small LED-backlit LCD televisions, ranging in size from 22″ to 29″ will offer Wi-Fi in the upcoming model year. While I’m not certain of the use for the wireless connectivity, I’d bet it’s to provide access to LG’s Smart TV or other digital services through these more compact displays. Up until now, LG’s internet-connected displays have been designed for the living room, but this new feature could put streaming video, images and other digital media in your bedroom, den, kitchen or other location where a large display doesn’t make sense. Sure, you could always buy an add-on box like a Roku or Apple TV for those locations, but having the feature built into the set should keep the cost lower for consumers.

The exact details on these sets have yet to be revealed by LG, but I’d bet they’ll turn up at CES 2013 in a couple of weeks.

Adorama Flashpoint 500C LED camera light Review

It’s time to get extremely bright with the Flashpoint 500C LED Light from Adorama – so bright it’ll make your photo session as visible as the sun. What this unit actually consists of is 500 individual Ultra Bright 5mm LED bulbs in a lamp with 4 barndoors, a 2-way switch , two color temperatures, and a 13-foot long power cord. This unit is both extremely light and super bright, especially for the cash you’re going to lay down on it.

IMG_0854

We used this array of LEDs in a single unit for several product shoots as of late, including (but not limited to) the Parrot Zikmu Solo speaker, Sony HX850 BRAVIA hdtv, and the Samsung UN75ES9000 HDTV (as seen above and below). This light is more than ready to be one of your key lights in any portrait or product shooting situation, without a doubt.

IMG_0856

You’ll be working with 50%-5900 K (Kelvin) Color Temp and 50%-3200 K (Kelvin) Color Temp and there’s a two-way switch for when you only need 250 bulbs instead of all 500 at once. You’ve got AC V style battery pack or XLR connection for power and of course four lovely barndoors to pull the light in what ever direction you do so desire. The light itself is 35 cm X 19 cm X 7 cm / 14 X 7.5 X 2.75 inches in size and you’ve got the ability to work with an add-on Flashpoint battery V Lock mount Li-ion 162.8-watt battery if you do so desire. We just used the massively long cord straight to the wall, this coming in standard with the package.

You do need to purchase a stand separate if you don’t have one handy, this costing around $40 from Adorama as well. The final cost of the light itself without the stand or the add-on battery is $199.95 USD, and for such a price you’ve got yourself a heck of a deal. Brighten up your life with so much light blasting from this beast that you’ll never know how you lived, breathed, and shot without it!

Light by Moore’s Cloud Goes for Homegrown Crowdfunding

About a month ago, a project launched on Kickstarter called the Light by Moore’s Cloud. Unfortunately, the project failed to meet its funding goal, despite gathering about 2,000 supporters. With the company’s Kickstarter funding plans foiled, it has decided to run its own homegrown crowdfunding project.

light moores cloud

The Light is an open-source, computer-controlled cube that has 52 individual LEDs inside that can change to any of 2 million different colors. The light can be configured to produce static colors, or cool animation effects. The Light is also Wi-Fi connected allow you to control it from an application running on the iPad or iPhone. And since it’s running an embedded Linux computer with the LAMP stack on it, you can write your own custom applications for it as well.

Moore’s Cloud is now seeking funding from its own website allowing people to pre-order the Light for $149(USD). That is about $50 more expensive than the device was on Kickstarter. Not only is the device more expensive, but it now has a $10 shipping fee as well. The increased prices will allow them to go into production with about 3,000 of the lights being pre-sold, which is significantly lower than the nearly 7,000 they had to sell to hit their Kickstarter goal. The increased price could be a turn-off to the people who had previously committed on Kickstarter, so only time will tell if they will hit their goal.

Assuming they can make it this time, they’re estimating a ship date of July 2013.

Quantum Bits LED Playthings Offer Hours of Light-up Geeky Fun

Looking for a fun stocking stuffer that I’m pretty sure your intended recipient doesn’t already have? Then check out Quantum Bits. They’re little light up thingies that react to motion.

f25e quantum bits

Just toss em around when you’re bored, and the tiny motion sensors inside will cause a pair of bright white LEDs to blink when they move around. In addition to throwing them in the air, you could glue them onto your shoes so they light up with movement, or even attach them to a speaker so they blink with the vibrations. I also like the idea of velcroing them to my cat’s paws.

Each Quantum Bit is rated to last up to 100,000+ flashes, so they should keep blinking for a good long time.

For $19.99(USD), you get a set of eight Quantum Bits – and you can order them over at ThinkGeek now.

LED Astronaut Helmet: It’s Spaaaace Magic!

While most of us will never get the chance to travel to far-off planets in a spaceship, that doesn’t mean we can’t fantasize about space travel right here on planet Earth. If you’ve always wanted to be an astronaut, then you might want to order your very own space helmet.

led space helmet 1

This lightweight acrylic space helmet looks extra fine thanks to the bright LED lighting inside of it. These light strips can even change colors, thanks to the included remote control. While it might not keep you breathing in the vacuum of space, it is perfect for a night out on the town (assuming you go to raves or costume parties regularly.)

led space helmet 2

Adding to the effect are light-reactive fluorescent visor pivots, which glow even brighter when the LEDs are illuminated. You can expect at least 8 hours of light on a single charge of the included battery pack, so your mission flight can last all through the night.

Artist Jenn Mann made the first of these helmets for a David Bowie-themed party, but is now making them custom for those who want to join her on her journey through space.

The LED space helmet sells for $182(USD), which I think is a steal for something that looks this awesome.

Freerunners decked out in light suits put on a pretty impressive light show

If you’re into freerunning, then the video above is probably one that you have to watch. While freerunning itself is a pretty impressive feat of athleticism, what makes this video doubly impressive is the fact that these three freerunners – Jason Paul, Shaun Wood, and Anan Anwar – were freerunning around the streets of Bangkok, Thailand after dark while donning light suits. The suits themselves appear to be rather simplistic and basically consists of LED strips, duct tape and some batteries, and like its director Frank Sauer pointed out, these suits look like they could have been taken from the Tron movie. If you have a few minutes to spare, you should definitely check the video out for a pretty spectacular light show!

Super Guitar Licks Rock Star Jacket Lights Up Any Concert

A rock concert is nothing if there are no crazy costumes, loud music, a banging performance and fantastic tunes and riffs, although you are always more than welcome to leave out the bat biting finale. Well, the only way you can get away from wearing strange looking costumes and yet pass off as being perfectly normal or even cool, would be in a music video, or in a concert as a celebrity. Fashion designer Christian Joy might be on to something here, as she is famous for her eclectic range of stage costumes for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and recently she was challenged by silicon giants Intel to come up with something that would reshape her world with nothing more than an Ultrabook. Her effort gave birth to this design project known as the Super Guitar Licks Rock Star Jacket, which currently falls under the prototype stage.

Basically, the Super Guitar Licks Rock Star Jacket functions as a denim jacket that is high tech as it has been fitted with LEDs that will respond to guitar music, lighting up whenever you play to create different patterns. Rock on!

Running Around Bangkok with Light Suits Looks So Damn Fun

Freerunners are already freaking insane. I mean, it’s a bunch of dudes turning the world into some sort of video game. How insane is that, right? But when you deck them out in LED lights and have them run around at night in Bangkok? It starts to really look like a video game. More »
