Left 4 Dead 2 Beta Francis Is Now Available

Left 4 Dead 2 Beta Francis Is Now AvailableFirst of all, let us go through a little bit of history lesson. Valve picked up Turtle Rock Studios when it was still working on Left 4 Dead, and the team has gone indie since again, with this particular version of Francis being dated back to pre-acquisition days. Well, you can now pick him up from Steam Workshop to see action in Left 4 Dead 2. Valve did mention that they are unable to promise for other characters to be introduced, but will still try their darndest best (or words according to that effect).

Francis can be enabled by an update to Left 4 Dead 2, which happens to be primarily in support of modders. To underline that point, Valve did invite one prominent modder (his nickname happens to be Splinks, otherwise known as Zander to the family at Valve) to work in its offices for a few months just to help them develop better tools. Obviously, this particular move has its rewards, where some of the more useful updates include Starter Kits, Maya Files, and Tutorials. Those who are curious can always check out the Tutorial which should also provide enough information to address any particular issues that might just arise eventually, and get them fixed.

Left 4 Dead 3, Source 2 Seen In Valve Offices (Rumor)

Left 4 Dead 3, Source 2 Seen In Valve Offices (Rumor)Have you ever played any of the Left 4 Dead series? It is definitely a different take on the undead genre, and who knew that the undead themselves have different classes to torment the still living? Well, there are whispers going around that Left 4 Dead 3 is in active development – alongside the long awaited Source Engine 2, or at least according to some competitors in Valve’s Dota 2 championships, The International, who toured around Valve’s offices this week itself. Needless to say, any photo can be doctored these days, accompanied by some rather outlandish claims, so do take this bit of news with a pinch of salt.

It must be noted too, that Valve founder Gabe Newell has allegedly said to have confirmed that Source 2 is in the pipeline and in due time, it should be released for the masses. Has it been so long already, that Left 4 Dead 2 was released in 2009? Boy, how fast does time fly, and considering how it was only a year between the first Left 4 Dead title, the third version of the game is long overdue, at least in the books of fans of the game.

Resident Evil 6, Left 4 Dead 2 Crossing Over In Free Update This Spring

There aren’t many games that could make you jump while playing them, even if you’re playing during the middle of the day. Two games that could do this are Capcom’s Resident Evil series and Valve’s Left 4 Dead series. That’s why today’s news of both games crossing over makes complete sense. Sort of.

Resident Evil 6 PC players will be in for a special treat this spring as they’ll be able to play as the survivors from Left 4 Dead 2 in the game’s The Mercenaries No Mercy mode. Those won’t be the only characters from L4D2 to cross over to RE6 as the infected’s Witch and Mini Tank will also be adding their strength to the hordes of infected you’ll need to battle through. (more…)

Left 4 Dead 3 will happen according to Valve, no dates or time frame mentioned

If you’ve loved the Left 4 Dead series, then there’s a good chance that you’re itching for Left 4 Dead 3, hoping for not only stellar graphics but an equally, if not more, addictive gameplay. Well the good news is that Left 4 Dead 3 will happen, but as to when that will be is a complete mystery. This was confirmed by Valve’s Chet Faliszek in an interview with Eurogamer who quoted him as saying, “A 3? You know, some time down the road […] Like anything, I would say that to all of our games. So that’s not a promise of when or where.” In case it wasn’t obvious enough, it means that while Left 4 Dead 3 will be happening, it could be years before it will be officially announced. Faliszek also expressed interest in the possibility of a player-controlled “AI Director” which is basically the AI system in which determines where and when zombies spawn. Granted no specifics were mentioned, but we guess the fact that Left 4 Dead 3 is in the cards should appease many gamers.

Valve says NVIDIA’s the best, Steam and Left 4 Dead for Linux coming along nicely

Valve says NVIDIA's the best, Steam and Left 4 Dead for Linux coming along nicely

The godfather of Linux, Linus Torvalds, may think that NVIDIA is “the worst,” but Valve respectfully disagrees. The company has been working closely with the manufacturer, as well as AMD and Intel, to boost performance of its hardware under the open source OS. The developer clearly has an interest in getting the best from those companies as it works to port Left 4 Dead 2 and Steam to Linux. That close partnership is already bearing impressive fruit as Valve claims its co-op zombie shooter now performs better on Ubuntu than it does under Windows 7 using a GeForce GTX 680. The first Open GL Linux version managed a measly six frames per second, while the Direct X powered Microsoft one was topping 270. Only a few months later, and Left 4 Dead 2 is hitting 315fps on the 32-bit version of Precise Pangolin, outperforming even the Open GL Windows port which sits at 305fps. Of course, it’s relatively well established that Ubuntu has lower overhead and running Direct X only compounds the issue, though, its unparalleled driver support can’t be denied. While it’s not completely fair to compare performance on a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit one, Valve is proving that gaming on Linux need not be some proof-of-concept exercise. Linus can flip NVIDIA the bird all he wants but, through its work with Valve, it may be doing more to bring Linux to the mainstream than anyone previously has.

Left 4 Dead 2 Cold Stream DLC arrives on Mac and PC, Xbox 360 version gets delayed

Valve has finally let loose the Kraken – nay, they have released the highly anticipated Cold Stream DLC pack for Left 4 Dead 2, where it will work with both the Mac and PC platforms. As for Xbox 360 owners, you will need to exercise this zen-like state known as “patience” as it has been delayed. According to the development team, “We are working with Microsoft on a release schedule. We don’t have an ETA yet but we hope to have it out soon.” I have come to realize that the word “soon” is hugely relative, so hopefully things will speed up to cater for the Xbox 360 gaming groupies.

To recap, what is Cold Stream? Cold Stream is actually based on a community campaign that Valve saw enough potential to turn it official. It will come with maps such as Cold Stream, Blood Harvest, Crash Course, Dead Air, Death Toll and No Mercy, in addition to “surprises”. Those gaming on the Mac and PC will be able to get this DLC for free, but our friends who will have to wait for it patiently for the Xbox 360 will have to exchange 560 MS Points for it. When translated to real world dollars, we are looking at approximately $7 thereabouts.

Valve Source Filmmaker makes a movie out of any Source game, now you’re directing with Portals (video)

Valve Source Filmmaker makes a movie out of any Source game, now you're directing with Portals video

Creating machinima with a video game engine usually requires accepting one of two truths: either that it will require a lot of fudging or that it will have all the sophistication of playing with action figures. Valve Software isn’t very happy with that dichotomy, which is why it’s posting its very own movie-making tool, Source Filmmaker, as a public beta. Any game that runs on the Source engine, whether it’s Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2 or another in the family, can have gameplay run-throughs edited and dissected right down to custom facial expressions. As Valve expounds in the video after the break, throwing a gaming-grade PC at the task gives directors the advantage of seeing exactly how any changes will look in the final scene; there’s no rough wireframes or pre-rendering here. Budding Francis Ford Coppolas can sign up for an invitation to the Filmmaker beta at the project page. If you’d just like to see how far someone can go with the end results, we’ve also included the latest Team Fortress 2 character profile video, Meet the Pyro, after the jump.
