Portraits “Drawn” with LEGO: Brick Sketches

We’ve seen a LEGO creation that can draw, but I was pleasantly surprised to realize that you can also use LEGO to draw. That’s what Chris McVeigh is doing with his Brick Sketches series. He makes 12″ x 16″ portraits of geeky characters not with ink or paint but with LEGO.

Speaking with My Modern Met, Chris said he was inspired by his artist friends, who were creating miniature sketches. You might think that using LEGO would be easier than using ink, but it has its own challenges as well. Chris said that “it can be a real challenge to find just the right combination of plates to represent a specific character. Adding to the complexity is that not all parts are available in all colors, and worse yet, I may not have all the parts on hand. “ He’s done a great job so far though!

Legobot Is A DIY 3D Printer

There is nothing quite like a DIY project to keep you occupied, especially when you have plenty of technical know how brimming in your head, and want to “free” all of that in a project that you have an interest in. I do not know of many people who are able to turn down a shot at Lego building, and if you have always wanted to own a 3D printer of your own, why not build one using Lego bricks? That is what engineering student Matthew Kreuger came up with, where you require an old camcorder, a hot glue gun and a few hundred bricks of Legos, you are more or less good to go. The full instructions can be found on popular maker site Instructables.com if you are interested.

Kreuger did mention that this particular DIY 3D printer happens to reside more in the realm of prototype territory compared to being a finished article, but it is capable of churning out 3D objects that have been modeled with LEGO’s Digital Designer software in hot glue. A LEGO NXT brick will be used as the “brain” of the printer, as that is where it operates the printer from, via its trio of output ports that will be used to attach motors, with a quartet of input ports that will see sensors attached to it. Nothing like a little creativity and circumstance (lack of money in this case for the masses) to see an affordable solution, eh?

Delaware Has World’s Tallest Lego Tower

One of the ways to be extremely famous would be to break a world record, or attempt something so audacious (more often than not to the risk of your life and limb), that no one else would have even thought of it before. Well, for the Red Clay School District, Monday evening proved to be an extremely memorable one as the world’s tallest Lego tower was unveiled. This particular Lego tower took months to complete, in addition to a fair number of days of painstaking engineering to ensure that this particular Lego tower will remain upright for quite some time. The number of Lego bricks required to prop the tower up numbered at over 500,000 units, and the entire shebang is definitely not light – we are talking about approximately 1,000 kilograms worth of Lego bricks, all of them painstakingly stacked up to exactly 112 feet, 11.75” in height.

That would make it taller than 10 stories in height, which in turn has made it the officially tallest structure which is made of interlocking toy bricks ever constructed – and it has been verified by the Guinness Book of World Records. What are some of the Lego projects that you think should be turned into a world record breaking feat?

LEGO Cthulhu Will Destroy Your Sanity

When you cast your eyes upon LEGO Cthulhu you will lose any sanity that you have left. It is simply pure evil and awesome to behold. It will leave you a drooling quivering mess that is better off dead. But, hey, don’t let that stop you. It’s an amazing geek creation.

    LEGO cthulu

This custom LEGO sculpture debuted at Bricks by the Bay recently and was made by Carl Merriam. It took 1,400 bricks, and he actually made it look frightening. All of the details are stunning. It took around 30 hours to complete.

The ancient one has awakened and he is amazingly awesome. Even in brick form. Great job Carl. Don’t sleep with the lights off.

    Lego Mindstorms EV3 Unveiled

Lego Mindstorms EV3 UnveiledLego continues to deliver when it comes to their Mindstorms kit, and the latest one is known as the Lego Mindstorms EV3 – which will include construction materials such as studs, beams, girders and wheels which will then be used to construct a robot. Just when you thought that Lego was all about bricks, don’t be surprised to find out that the only brick which you will be able to discover here would be the robot’s very own programmable brain. This new Lego Mindstorms EV3 will hit the markets later this September 1st at most major retailers, where it will retail for $350 a pop.

Truth be told, Mindstorms does have its fair share of community of hackers and hobbyists, and the Lego Mindstorms EV3 would continue to keep this particular community happy. There will be over 550 pieces of the Lego Mindstorms EV3 kit, so it might seem a wee bit more daunting at first, considering how it is meant for kids who are aged 10 and above. At least there are printed step-by-step instructions as well as color-coded pieces that ensure the robot known as TRACK3R is a whole lot easier. When you have completed assembling the TRACK3R, it is capable of accomplishing simple pre-programmed missions such as turning in a circle. According to Lego, the first robot might take approximately an hour to complete.

10,000+ Piece LEGO Retro Gaming Mosaic is Truly Epic

Check out this incredible piece of geekery I just found over on Etsy. This LEGO mosaic is loaded with so many classic Nintendo, Sega and arcade characters, I think my head might just explode. I dare you to try and identify them all.

    lego mosaic 1

It was made from a whopping 10,511 individual LEGO pieces, each affixed to a large grey LEGO baseplate. Since each baseplate measures 15″ x 15″ and there are 15 baseplates, that means this thing measures 75″ x 45″. Wow. That’s almost 24 square feet of gaming awesomeness.

I can’t believe that the artist who created this simply posted it under an Etsy shop called “Mytemporaryshop.” How are we supposed to give him/her credit for this masterpiece? If it’s you, please step forward and be recognized as a god (or goddess) among geeks.

This one-of-a-kind work of art is available for appx. $4823 (USD) over on Etsy, and all profits from the sale of the piece will go to help fund its creator’s project to send her class to Africa next year.
