Google 'opens the playground' for an Android event October 29th

Add one more social event to your October calendar, as Google has just pushed out invites to an Android event in New York on the October 29th where we expect to be introduced to the next generation of Nexus. The LG E960 Mako — which we’ve taken to calling the Nexus G but has also been referred to as the Nexus 4 — seems to be a sure bet to make an appearance after its many leaks, and a 32GB Nexus 7 variant rates as highly probable. There have also been long-running rumors that we will see Nexus hardware from more than one manufacturer, although lately whispers have focused on the possibility of a 5-inch phablet from HTC, and a 10-inch Nexus-branded tablet made by Samsung. Without the benefit of physical evidence we’d take those with a huge grain of salt, but we’ll obviously be ready for anything. Of course, it’s adding up to be a long day for us no matter what, since Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 launch event is scheduled for just a few hours later on the West Coast and our own reader meetup is in NYC later that night. We’ll be on hand bringing you all the news no matter what time zone it occurs in, and Google even promises a live video stream on YouTube.

LG 84-inch LCD for Interactive Whiteboards is first of its kind in the world

LG achieves yet another world’s first by mass producing their 84-inch Ultra Definition (UD) LCD display which will see action in interactive whiteboards. Classrooms are definitely trending towards being smarter than ever before, and such interactive whiteboards will certainly help propel students to learn faster and teachers to dispense of knowledge more effectively and efficiently. Not only that, there would no longer be any more “fun times” where kids throw chalk bits or dusters at one another when the teacher is not looking. The new 84” UD panel measures a whopping 1.9m x 1.1m, making it ideal for classrooms as shares similar dimensions to conventional whiteboards. Not only that, you get a maximum brightness of 350 nit, which is 3.5 times brighter compared to current projector-type interactive whiteboards; while the resolution count of 3840 x 2160 (about 8.3 million pixels) is a stunning 8 times the image quality of current HD projectors.

LG Optimus G Review

We were at the LG Optimus G launch in Korea  on September 17*, where we were able to briefly play with it. The Optimus G is the first smartphone to launch with the Quad-Core SnapDragon S4 Pro processor, so it is supposed to offer state-of-the-art performance. From what we have seen with the pre-production unit in Korea, it was fast indeed.

It looks like LG is back in the game of high-end smartphones with this well crafted unit that is truly a great competitor for the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S3. The elegant chassis sports a Quad-Core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor 2GB RAM (vs 1GB for both the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3), a 4.7-inch True HD IPS Plus display (1280 x 768 pixels),  a 13 MP camera or 8 MP depending on regions (the international unit we have here has the 13 MP shooter) and 32GB of internal storage.

Google seems to have acknowledged the Optimus G as a top device since, according to the recent rumors, the search giant’s upcoming Google Nexus 4 smartphone might have been designed by LG. This would be the first time that LG will manufacture a Google phone.

With a 2-year contract, the Sprint LG Optimus G will retail for $199.99, which is in line with most high-end smartphone launches, with a few exceptions.  AT&T has just announced  that the handset will be available on 2ndof November and will be priced at $199.99.

Although performance looks good on the paper and as perceived on the pre-production unit, we need to look into this in detail and answer the question: “How good is it?”. Our goal here is to provide you with our best shot at answering this. In this review, we hope to give you a realistic feel on how it is to use the LG Optimus G  in the real world. Ready?

AT&T announces the LG Optimus G for 2nd November, pre-orders now available

This is LG’s latest flagship handset and looks quite promising in terms of hardware specs and could in theory be one of the most powerful smartphones available on the market. AT&T has also announced that pre-orders for the handset are now up so pop on over to AT&T’s website to pre-order the device today!

So what sort of specs are we looking at here? Korean IPTV service LG Uplus launches a Google TV-powered set-top box

Korean IPTV service LG Uplus launches a Google TVpowered settop box

While we’ve seen the Google TV platform spread to additional manufacturers and some new lower-priced form factors, LG Uplus (not the same as LG Electronics) is the first we’ve seen offering a set-top box for its IPTV service based on it. new and existing customers alike can opt for the U+TV G, which will blend live TV streams, video on-demand and Google TV apps. Rapper Psy will be playing a large part in a national campaign to promote the offering, and after making Korea the tenth country Google TV is available in, Google says it will continue to work with providers around the world. Jumping inside the cable box is a notable move for the project, however at home hasn’t significantly improved integration beyond that originally offered by Dish Network, and it’s not even built into the Google Fiber set-top box. Check out a few (oddly silent?) demo videos embedded after the break.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 15, 2012

Welcome back to Monday everyone – we’ve got a heaping helping of news to recap, so let’s dive right in. Today we found out that Apple’s manufacturing partnership with Samsung may not last much longer, and that the Google Nexus 7 might just be the best-selling Android tablet ever (which, given its immense popularity, doesn’t surprise us in the least). One Walmart store has its shelves fully stocked with copies of Windows 8, and this afternoon, we have reason to believe that a new, slimmer iMac may be in the pipeline.

By now, you’ve probably heard plenty of iPad Mini rumors, but today we found out that Apple may reveal a new Mac Mini alongside the bite-sized tablet. Today we saw some pictures that appear to have been snapped by the camera on the yet-unannounced Nexus 4, and Apple has managed to bring former Amazon executive William Stasior on to oversee the continuing development of Siri. Android 4.1.2 was sent out to eager Galaxy Nexus owners today, and just in case you missed Felix Baumgartner’s death-defying jump over the weekend, you can see the highlights again today – complete with terrifying shots from his helmet cam.

LG delivered its Jelly Bean update schedule for a few of its devices today, and speaking of LG, AT&T announced that the Optimus G goes up for pre-order tomorrow with a price tag of $200. We heard that Windows 8 is getting an underwhelming response from vendors today, and Nintendo dropped the price of the original Wii down to just $130 in anticipation of the holiday rush. A new study is claiming that file sharers actually buy more music than people who don’t partake in that rather controversial activity, and Microsoft released a brand new Windows 8 ad today.

Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition players found out that they’re in for a treat tomorrow, while Notch was busy showing off new footage from his upcoming game 0x10c and Microsoft was handing out Xbox Live bans to Halo 4 pirates. Activision announced today that Call of Duty Elite will be free with Black Ops II, and we were told that the Wii U gamepad boasts a latency of only 1/60 of a second. Google is in trouble in Europe over privacy concerns again, and we got to take a look at a new robotic wheelchair that can actually walk up stairs. How cool is that?

Finally tonight, we have quite a few original articles for you to have a look at. Chris Burns puts the Optimus G through its gaming paces with Wild Blood, and we pit Xbox Music, Spotify, iTunes, and Google Music against one another to see the strengths and weaknesses of all four. We’ve got a new review of the Huawei Ascend D1 quad XL by Chris Burns, and a review of the Motorola Electrify 2 by your humble wrapper-upper. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

AT&T LG Optimus G coming November 2 for $199

We’ve been hearing a lot of about LG‘s upcoming flagship phone, the Optimus G, and finally, details on availability and pricing have officially hit the airwaves — for AT&T at least. The carrier will launch the Optimus G on November 2 for a decent price of $199 after a two-contract has been signed.

We heard earlier this month that AT&T would be bringing over the LG Optimus G to its own network, but as with many announcements, pricing and availability were yet to be known. To say the least, we’re excited that they finally decided to give us the details that really mattered. And in just three weeks, the phone can be yours

The best part is, AT&T will begin receiving pre-orders starting tomorrow. Just visit their Optimus G page, and you’ll be able to reserve your phone as much as almost three weeks in advance. If the phone lives up to the hype, pre-orders should go pretty quickly, so you may want to stay on top of reserving your own before they end up possibly selling out.

To review, $199 will get you a 4.7-inch 1280×768 True HD IPS Plus display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor, an 8MP rear camera (sorry, no 13MP version like on the global model), 2GB of RAM, and dual-band AT&T 4G LTE. For just a dollar under $200, this doesn’t sound like a bad deal. Be sure to hit up our hands-on to learn more about the phone.
