LG Optimus L9 expands the L Series family

I remember back in the fledgling days of the mobile phone industry, where a new model was released not every couple of months, but rather, it can sometimes take an entire year before a new model hit the market. Needless to say, things have certainly progressed at lightning fast speed these days, and we get bombarded with new smartphones left, right and center.

Well, I guess LG has decided to follow the adage, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” to the letter after looking at how the Optimus L3, Optimus L5, and Optimus L7 smartphones performed in terms of sales post release earlier this year, hence coming up with their latest addition to the L Series family, the Optimus L9.

Well, just what kind of hardware specifications and performance does the LG Optimus L9 pack underneath the hood? We are looking at a body that measures just 9.1mm thin, where it sports a slimming metallic streak as well as a modern square style which your hand will definitely find comfortable in holding.

Apart from that, there is also the vaunted largest-in-class 4.7” IPS display which is touted to deliver clear and true-to-life images complete incredible detail for comfortable viewing experience. In order to make sure that the Optimus L9 does not end up dead before the day is over, it will be equipped with a high-density 2,150mAh SiO+ battery so that you can enjoy maximum performance.

To ensure that this is truly a smartphone, the LG Optimus L9 will also come with differentiated UX features, including the QTranslator and My Style Keypad function along with the ever-popular QMemo. First of all, the new QTranslator function is a hoot to play around with, where it is touted to instantly translate words, entire sentences and phrases using a simple scan, drawing from its reservoirs of nearly 44 foreign languages to 64 user languages.

The implementation of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology will also enable it to recognize letters upon scanning with the camera, while the integrated electronic dictionary or online translation engine are able to translate words, sentences or phrases.

No idea on when the Jelly Bean update will arrive, although it comes with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system right out of the box. The 1GHz dual-core processor should be enough to keep it running most apps decently, while 1GB RAM is accompanied by 4GB of internal memory.

LG Optimus L9 packs big screen, big battery and clever translator

LG has announced its latest Android smartphone, the Optimus L9, delivering a sizable 4.7-inch IPS display and Ice Cream Sandwich for the budget to midrange market. Slotting in beneath the LG Optimus G revealed yesterday, the Optimus L9 has a 1GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM, running the company’s customized reskin of Android 4.0.

There’s also a 5-megapixel main camera on the back, and a VGA-resolution front facing camera for video calls. LG isn’t talking screen resolution right now, but it has used an IPS panel which should offer broader viewing angles and improved brightness over regular LCD.

Otherwise, there’s 4GB of onboard storage and a high-density 2,510 mAh battery using the company’s SiO+ technology; no actual runtime figures, beyond an “all day long” prediction, however. LG manages to squeeze that into a 131.9 x 68.2 x 9.1 mm and 125g casing with a few metallic highlights to help the L9 look as though it’s worth more than it is.

As for software, there’s an on-screen keyboard that can change layout depending on whether you’re using it right- or left-handed, along with QMemoTM for recording notes (with handwriting support, though there’s no included stylus). QTranslator uses OCR and either online translation tools or – useful if you’re roaming abroad with no data connection – a local dictionary to convert foreign text to your native language in real-time.

LG isn’t talking price or release date for the L9, but we’re expecting to hear more about it at IFA 2012 this week.

LG Optimus L9 revealed

So we took a closer look at the LG Optimus G earlier this morning, where that was touted to be the flagship under the LG umbrella. LG’s Smart TV alliance grows, promises first cross-platform HDTV apps in September

LG's Smart TV alliance grows, promises first crossplatform HDTV apps in September

The Smart TV Alliance consisting of LG and TP Vision (Philips) is still hammering away at its dream of platform-independent Smart TV apps, and as IFA 2012 gets under way it has a few new announcements. After promising Japanese manufacturers would join back in June it has welcomed Toshiba to the fold, as well as other supporters like Qaulcomm, Mstar, Onigo and YuMe. At IFA 2012, LG is showing off the first apps built to the original SDK 1.0 spec built by Accuweather, Eurosport, online music channel Vilanoise and others. It’s not stopping there however, as the SDK 2.0 we’d heard about is still due before 2012 is out, and has been built to take advantage of the new more powerful SoCs that companies like Qualcomm (the S4 family) and Mstar can provide to HDTV manufacturers.

LG Optimus L9 announced with 4.7-inch display, language translation app and custom keyboard

LG Optimus L9 announced with 47inch display, language translation app and custom keyboard

There will soon be a new Optimus L-Series smartphone on the prowl, as LG has just announced the Optimus L9 as a followup to its Optimus L3, L5 and L7 handsets. This series is viewed by LG as a budget lineup that places an emphasis on style, and the L9 will undoubtedly be the leader of the pack, as it boasts both a dual-core 1GHz CPU and a large, 4.7-inch IPS display. The phone will be outfitted with Android 4.0, 1GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel rear camera and a beefy 2,150mAh battery.

New software is also set to ship with the Optimus L9, which includes both a redesigned keyboard and a language translation app. The new keyboard is dubbed the My Style Keypad, which allows users to adjust the key placement for easier one-handed typing — like we’ve seen in Android 4.0 for the Galaxy Note — along with a separated layout for landscape view (that you can peek in the gallery below). Meanwhile, the language translation service is dubbed QTranslator, which leverages OCR to translate sentences and phrases from 44 different languages into 64 native languages. There’s no word yet on pricing or availability, though we’ll be sure to let you know the moment those final tidbits become known.

LG Spectrum 2 accessories spotted

Earlier this morning, we spotted the LG Spectrum 2 under Verizon’s equipment guide, but when it comes to the slew of accessories that accompany the LG VS930 (which is the code name for the Spectrum 2), then I guess you could say that the world had remained pretty much mum on the situation. Still, the list of specifications for the Spectrum 2 remain very much under the rumor mill, but at least we now have a glimpse of what is to come in terms of its accessories, including a car dock, a home dock, and a protective case that does seem as though it is full well capable of handling its fair share of wear and tear under regular use.

Still, it is fair to say that an official announcement would be very much welcomed, in addition to two other highly essential details – availability as well as pricing. Hopefully as more leaks are released to the market, it would signal the impending release of the full spectrum (sorry, I just could not resist that particular pun) of accessories to the mass market. Still, the handset itself out to roll out prior to its accessories, as that makes a whole lot more sense.

LG Optimus G is first LTE smartphone with quad-core Snapdragon processor in the world

LG breaks new ground yet again with the introduction of the LG Optimus G, which is touted to be the first LTE smartphone in the world to carry a quad-core Snapdragon processor. There is definitely no doubt right from the very beginning that this will be a high-end smartphone, delivering powerful performance right out of the box while coming in an elegant and sleek design, in addition to offering an innovative user experience. Since it is the first LTE device in the world that features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad-Core processor, you can be sure that the LG Optimus G will be the prime example for all future flagship handsets from the good people at LG.

Just what kind of hardware specifications can you expect from LG’s flagship smartphone? Well for starters, it will not only deliver LTE supported capabilities, the LG Optimus G will also feature the latest generation Adreno 320 GPU for all your mobile graphics needs. The Snapdragon S4 Pro will clock in at 1.5GHz, delivering Asynchronous Symmetric Multiprocessing (aSMP) that is said to allow each core to power up and down independently, which is good news for the handset’s battery as every single drop of juice will be maximized in this manner. As for the Adreno 320, it is touted to deliver more than three times the speed of the Adreno 225 which can be found in previous Snapdragon processors.

Thanks to assistance from LG Display, the LG Optimus G will come with a beautiful 4.7″ WXGA True HD IPS+ Display with 320ppi high pixel density (1280×768 pixels) and Stripe RGB IPS Panel with 15:9 aspect ratio. You know that this is a beauty right from the get go, where the display offers sharper and crisper images with color accuracy of sRGB 100% to showcase natural and life-like images.

You can perform Live Zooming that enables zooming in and out while viewing a video, while the Dual Screen Dual Play feature enables mirroring between the smartphone and a TV, in addition to displaying different content on each screen. The LG Optimus G will come with 32GB of internal memory, 2GB RAM, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity, USB 2.0 support, A-GPS, DLNA and NFC capabilities. It has a 13-megapixel at the back and a 1.3-megapixel in front. Any takers for the new superphone?

LG Spectrum 2 caught posing with docks and cases

LG Spectrum 2 pictured with accessories

At this point, there isn’t much mystery left surrounding the LG VS930, aka Spectrum 2 for Verizon. Despite the onslaught of rumored specs, however, we still haven’t seen much in the way of the phone’s accessories. That has all changed now, as we’ve gotten our hands on a few smallish images of the new Spectrum residing in a car dock, home dock and a rugged-looking protective case. We’re still waiting on an official announcement along with availability and pricing (though we imagine all three details will come at the same time), but we try to convince ourselves that each new leak is a step closer to reality.

LG EA93 21:9 aspect ratio 29-inch LCD spotted on IFA show floor (eyes-on)

LG 29inch EA93 219 aspect ratio LCD spotted spotted on IFA show floor

Fancy a wickedly wide 21:9 aspect ratio LCD that’s more than a touch larger than what you’ll find on that unique Toshiba Ultrabook? It looks like LG’s got you covered, with its 29-inch EA93. We spotted a half dozen of the ultra-wide IPS displays during a preview of the show floor at IFA, and were able to grab a few frames. You need to see this LCD in person to get a feel for just how wide it really is — with a 29-inch diagonal panel that’s incredibly short and squat, you’ll be compromising quite a bit of desk real estate in order to add some horizontal pixels.

From booth materials, it seems that LG is promoting this product as a multitasking solution — the format is well-suited as a replacement for dual-monitor rigs, letting you view several windows at once without adjusting your eyes vertically. We already had a solid grasp on the EA93’s specs, which include a 2,560 x 1,080-pixel panel, a four-way split screen feature and plenty of inputs, including two HDMI ports, DVI Dual Link and DisplayPort, though the product placard also revealed USB 3.0 connectivity and 7-watt stereo speakers. Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but if you’re prepared to add such a device at any cost, we’d suggest clearing some desk space now — these are set to ship in November.
