iPhone 5 in-cell touchscreen rolling out at LG

The CEO of LG Display has this week made it clear that they’ve started production of display panels using in-cell technology, these panels quite likely headed for Apple’s new iPhone (aka the iPhone 5) next month. While LG has not been able to be specific about where the panels will be used, Han Sang-beom, LG Display’s chief executive, did allow reporters to know that though they’d been struggling with perfecting the technology up until now, “those hard times have finally ended.” LG is a major supplier of flat screens utilized by Apple’s iPad and iPhone devices.

If you’ll have a peek back at an in-cell patent that appeared with Apple’s name on it earlier this month, you’ll find that they are indeed prepping the technology for future products. This technology allows LCD and touch recognition hardware to be integrated into one unit rather than two, allowing whichever product that uses a touchscreen with said technology to have much more room for other components behind the screen – or a thinner product overall.

Another interesting point to be made here is that the patent was originally filed all the way back in 2007 when the iPhone was first produced. This very well could simply mean that the technology was invented then and took this long to perfect – this tying in well with LG’s current announcement that they’d “had some hard times at first”. Han also let reporters known at that “the in-cell technology is the industry’s latest development. We will be able to supply the panels without any fail.”

For those of you looking to pick up the new iPhone, you’ll want to make sure you’re prepared to pick up a converter accessory as well as the device itself – there’s a new docking port in the mix too! We’ll be prepping several articles between here and the final announcement for the iPhone 5 – or whatever it’ll end up being called – so that you’re fully ready for the drop. Get ready for a whole new generation of Apple product!

Also note that the image above is a rendering of the new iPhone as created by the talented folks at NWE. Probably quite close to reality!

Verizon’s LG Optimus Vu could be the Intuition

LG’s reply to the Samsung Galaxy Note when it came to the phablet market was in the form of the LG Optimus Vu, offering all 5″ of viewing goodness to boot. Well, we do know that the LG Optimus Vu is making its way to the circles of Verizon Wireless, and there are some anonymous tipsters who have spoken to the folks over at Droid-Life, (hence the watermark in the images above) touting that Verizon will rename the LG Optimus Vu by calling it the “4G LTE Intuition by LG”. Seriously, does a piece of hardware like a phablet need such an obnoxiously long name? You could have just called it the LG Intuition without the 4G LTE suffix, and the world would have moved on nicely (and I would have had to type less words). It seems that the LG Intuition will retail for $199.99 on contract, but if you want to pick it up sans contract, then it will cost you $549.99 a pop. Those rocking to Verizon can look forward to a phablet from LG in due time.

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro could be new processor for LG’s future phones

When it comes to processors in your smartphones, one of the names that are surely worth taking note of would be Qualcomm, and it seems as though the company is working on a spanking new quad-core processor known as the Snapdragon S4 Pro, which has been speculated to see action in the upcoming LG device. Right now, the company mentioned that they are unable to give further comments on the device, at least not until LG steps forward with an official announcement of their own. Qualcomm did mention, however, at this particular handset from LG is already “currently in production”, where it will be sold in South Korea sometime from September this year onwards, with a very high probability of a global release arriving later in the year. Do you think that Qualcomm’s latest attempt at a quad-core processor in the form of the Snapdragon S4 Pro is going to be a winner?

LG mass produces thinner display with iPhone 5 as the speculated target

LG Display is one of the manufacturers for Apple when it comes to displays for their devices, and we have received word that LG Display has begun mass production of an unknown, albeit thinner display, and many people are speculating that this new and thinner display could very well be the same display that sees action in Apple’s upcoming next generation iPhone. Right now, the display’s production schedule is said to remain in line with customers’ product release plans, according to LG’s chief executive. “We just began mass production and we don’t expect any disruption in supplies,” mentioned Han Sang-beom, chief executive of LG Display. Apart from LG Display, Sharp of Japan is also speculated to begin shipping displays meant for the new iPhone sometime from this month onwards.

LG Display starts volume production of in-cell touch screens, we have a hunch as to who wants them

LG Display 1080p 5-inch panel

Looks like we’ll be finding in-cell touch displays in our devices sooner rather than later: LG Display has confirmed that it’s been mass-producing the thinner LCDs since earlier in August. CEO Han Sang-beom also notes that manufacturing has been going as smooth as, well, glass. Despite the complexity of building touch input directly into a display, the company expects to keep the supply going “without any fail,” according to the executive. As to who’s making the orders? LG Display isn’t naming its customers on the record, and production could be as much for its sister company’s phones and tablets as anyone else’s. It’s hard not to pinpoint Apple as the 800-pound gorilla in the room, however. Apart from Apple representing one of LG Display’s biggest existing customers, multiple rumors and component leaks point to an iPhone with an in-cell display being in the works. The timing raises a distinct possibility that we’ll know more about the screen manufacturer’s clients in less than a month.

LG Has Started Production on Super Thin Screens Supposedly for the iPhone 5 [Rumors]

Reuters is reporting that LG has started mass production of a “new and thinner display, widely speculated to be for use in Apple’s next iPhone.” It makes sense, especially since we expect the iPhone 5 to be announced on September 12th, for factories to start pumping out iPhone 5 parts. More »

LG Optimus Vu to bow on Verizon as the Intuition, stylus not included?

LG Optimus Vu to bow on Verizon as the Intuition, stylus not included

Could this 5-inch LG handset be Verizon’s answer to the Galaxy Note? Our Intuition tells us otherwise (get it?), but that screenshot above and corresponding FCC docs deign to differ. Really though, that lady razor name’s the purported new moniker for Big Red’s rebranded Optimus Vu: the heretofore Korea-only phablet we recently reviewed. While we found the outsized handset’s worth as a true S-Pen rival hampered by its lack of a digitizer and 4:3 aspect ratio, it could catch on with folks eager for a 7-inch tablet alternative. However this one eventually shakes down in the crowded Android marketplace, it appears subs are in store for a 4G LTE ride and the carrier’s typical $199 on two-year contract pricing. Curiously, the leak makes no mention of an included stylus, so perhaps the operator’s opting to spin this one as a more traditional smartphone release. Smart move, that.

Qualcomm confirms its role in LG superphone with quad-core Snapdragon S4

Qualcomm confirms its role in LG superphone with quadcore Snapdragon S4

There’s nothing like jumping the gun to announce your involvement with a phone that technically doesn’t exist, but we’ve gotta say, we love Qualcomm for doing it. The company has just revealed to us its role in the production of a smartphone from LG that’ll feature quad-core Snapdragon S4 internals, and if it performs anything like recent benchmarks suggest, you’d best hold onto your hats. For a little backstory, rumors are currently circulating that LG is producing a smartphone of epic proportions that’s known as the Optimus G, which is said to wield a quad-core processor, a 4.7-inch IPS True HD display, 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera. Whether it’s related to this announcement is anyone’s guess, but you’ll be forgiven for salivating at the prospect. Fortunately, you won’t have long to find out the true home of the quad-core Snapdragon S4, as Qualcomm has also revealed that LG plans to release its next superphone for commercial availability this September in South Korea, with other territories to follow.

Update: AnandTech has gotten word from Qualcomm that the LG device in question will pack an MDM9615 LTE baseband chip as well.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 22, 2012

Welcome to Wednesday, folks. This particular hump day saw news that the Department of Justice and the FBI have brought down a trio of websites that dealt in pirated Android apps, while a picture of a mini dock USB cable for the iPhone 5 surfaced as well. Microsoft announced a number of things related to the Xbox 360 today, kicking off a search for people to beta test its new dashboard update, permanently dropping the price of the Kinect by $40, and announcing Xbox 360 Essentials packs, which come packed with accessories to accommodate Xbox 360 owners.

The FTC has ended its investigation of Facebook’s Instagram purchase, though the FTC wrapped things up rather silently. LG has a massive new 4K HDTV available now in South Korea, HP posted less-than-stellar results for quarter 3 of its fiscal year, and today NASA talked about how the Curiosity rover has been getting around on the surface of Mars. Today also brought some new sample shots of the Nikon CoolPix S800c Android camera, along with a new video demo for the device.

We got a closer look at the Archos Gen10 XS tablet line today, and the struggling HTC is planning to cut the price on its One series of phones after the line posted disappointing sales. T-Mobile announced that it will begin offering nationwide unlimited 4G next month, while Rockstar delivered a new round of Grand Theft Auto V screenshots today, and we have a feeling that move screenshots are coming sometime later this week, so keep an eye out for those.

AT&T has reiterated its decision to block FaceTime, and cited an FCC ruling in support of it. Verizon looks be gearing up to offer a Nokia Windows Phone 8 later this year, and sadly, Nintendo confirmed that Nintendo Power magazine will be shutting down in December. NASA has kicked off a simulation meant to test landing on a near-Earth asteroid, and there’s a new iPhone app on the scene that will help you determine which Super PACs are putting out those constant political ads. Black Isle Studios appears to have risen from the dead, but no one seems to know the circumstances surrounding the re-opening.

Finally tonight, we have a review of the new Archos 101 XS tablet by Chris Burns. Enjoy the rest of your evening, everyone!

Toshiba / Samsung joint venture hit with lawsuit by LG over DVD+RW/RAM patents

LG Electronics has found itself at the center of quite a few patent lawsuits in recent years (both as a plaintiff and defendant), and it’s now kicked yet another one off. As Bloomberg reports, LG has today filed suit against Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology, alleging that the Toshiba / Samsung joint venture violated a number of patents related to DVD+RW and DVD-RAM technology. In the complaint, LG further alleges that TSST is knowingly infringing on the patents as they were previously licensed to Toshiba itself (and TSST as an affiliate company) as part of a deal that expired in 2010. LG is asking for a jury trial to sort things out, and demanding that TSSC pay “no less than a reasonable royalty” along with some unspecified damages. You can find the complaint in full at the link below.
