LG Spectrum user manual updated, has Ice Cream Sandwich references

Hmmm, I guess the age old adage that “better late than never” can be safely applied to the LG Spectrum. After all, we have already spotted leaked renders of the LG Spectrum 2, and here we are with word that the old school LG Spectrum user manual has just been updated, sporting references to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Unless someone out there made a typing error on purpose, this can only mean but one thing – Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is coming to the original LG Spectrum. Basically, it does seem as though the operating system update is just awaiting its final approval from the folks over at Verizon.

Some of the new features found on Ice Cream Sandwich has been included into the updated manual, including multi-tasking capability. I guess it takes nothing else other than patience for Verizon to perhaps issue a statement for the arrival date of Ice Cream Sandwich for LG Spectrum owners. After all, if you had waited all this while, what is a short while more, right?

LG renames Quick Voice to Q Voice with English version to launch in 2013

LG recently launched its Quick Voice service in Korea to challenge Apple’s Siri and Samsung’s S Voice. About a month after launch, the company is rebranding it to compete with Samsung’s S Voice and has changed its name to Q Voice, which is expected to debut with an English version in 2013. Currently, Q Voice is limited to Korean-speaking LG users and offers standard voice control functions that have been integrated with 11 Android apps.

LG uses its own technology in combination with Google software to process words and phrases to understand them. It can even pick out any single female voice in a crowded and noisy room full of male voices and can have its settings adjusted by speech to Bluetooth, sound and vibration.

Q Voice is already available on the 5-inch Optimus Vu slab and is scheduled to come to the Optimus LTE II with a software update at the end of the month. LG has also emphasized that Q Voice will be heading to additional smartphones in the future.

LG’s voice recognition app studies English, aims to pass the test next year

LG’s Quick Voice app’s monolingual status shouldn’t last long. After a quick restyle — it’s now Q Voice — the app is gearing up to launch internationally with an English language version ready for the first half of next year. LG also adds a bit more detail on its voice recognition offering, which can pick out a single female voice in a noisy room full of men and have the ability to make settings adjustments to Bluetooth, sound and vibration by speech. Perhaps only slightly less important than real functionality, the Q Voice interface will also include some “witty emotional responses” — ask what the device had for lunch and it will say it chowed down on 220 volts. LG Korea reiterates that the functionality is still limited to its domestic models of the Optimus Vu and incoming Optimus LTE II at the moment, but will feature on additional phones in the future. While voice recognition from bigger mobile rivals hasn’t revolutionized how we use our phones just yet, LG’s hoping the sheen of the newish tech won’t have worn off by 2013.

LG’s Q Voice voice assistant feature to arrive in English-speaking countries in 2013

It seems that voice assistant features are starting to become a trend in the smartphone industry, what with Apple hyping the use of Siri in the iPhone 4S, which was then followed by Samsung introducing the S Voice for the Galaxy S3, RIM’s Blackberry 10 is also expected to gain a voice assistant feature, and LG with Quick Voice. Unfortunately for LG users though, is that Quick Voice is currently limited to South Korea and Korean speakers only, which means that if you do not speak the Korean language, Quick Voice would be virtually useless for you.

Well the good news is that if you’ve always been a fan of LG, you will be pleased to learn that LG’s Quick Voice is expected to play catch-up in the first half of 2013 where it will be rolled out to English-speaking countries. It is also expected to undergo a name change and will be known as Q Voice instead. According to LG, Q Voice is expected to be better and more intuitive than the competition as it uses “reasoning with a probabilistic model to find the best answer”, which basically means that it will take into context the question as opposed to relying on a database. We have yet to try Quick Voice/Q Voice out for ourselves, so we can’t really attest to its effectiveness just yet, but it is certainly looking as though the voice assistant market is starting to get crowded. So, any LG users looking forward to Q Voice arriving for their phones?

NTP reaches agreement with 13 patent defendants including Apple, Microsoft and Google

NTP reaches agreement with 13 patent defendents including Apple, Microsoft and Google

One of the original “non-manufacturing IP firms,” NTP, has just signed an agreement with 13 of the companies it sued for infringing its email patents. The tech industry whales paying for licenses include Google, Microsoft and Yahoo on the software side; wireless operators Verizon, AT&T, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile; and handset companies Apple, HTC, Motorola, Palm, LG and Samsung. If all the litigation is blurring together in your head, we remind you that NTP is one of the founding patent under-bridge dwellers who made lawyers’ eyes everywhere light up with a $612 million payout from RIM back in 2006. That seemingly gave them the courage — and bankroll, presumably — to attack the above companies in 2010 for infringement of its eight wireless email patents, including push technology. The terms of the settlement weren’t disclosed, but considering the dollars paid out by RIM, “we can imagine quite a bit,” to quote Han Solo.

LG Spectrum 2 renders spotted?

LG Spectrum 2While we’ve heard that the original LG Spectrum will be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich soon, it might not be the only upgrade to the phone; it looks like LG has plans to replace it with a newer device. The folks over at Techno Buffalo have managed to get their hands on what appears to be a render of a new LG phone – the LG Spectrum 2. Considering that the original Spectrum only came out earlier this year, it seems a bit strange that the OEM is releasing a sequel to the phone.

The LG Spectrum 2 is said to feature a 4.7″ True HD IPS display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera, NFC capabilities, Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, Verizon 4G LTE connectivity, international GSM and UMTS support for global roaming. No word on a price yet, but I can’t imagine LG Spectrum owners being too pleased at this news if it turns out to be true.
