Hasta La Gadget!

Sometime last month, it was rumored that LG was conducting research of producing a 60” flexible OLED display. At the moment the largest flexible OLED display measures 7.4”, so as you can expect, 60” is a huge jump. As it turns out those rumors are true and this task was actually set about by the Korean government, which we expect is making LG feel very good about themselves since they were picked over their rival, Samsung who has been researching and working on flexible OLEDs for quite a while now. Assuming all goes to plan, LG expects to have these 60” flexible OLEDs ready by 2017, which can be used for commercial purposes such as displaying information in windows at bus stations, stores and other public places. However the underlying goal here is to generate exports and creating jobs by promoting next-gen technology as part of the country’s Future Flagship Program.

While regular consumers still wait for the first big screen OLED display to make it to big box stores, Korea’s Ministry of Knowledge Economy has chosen LG to lead the consortium charged with developing a 60-inch flexible OLED by 2017. Part of the Future Flagship Program, its goal is to generate exports and create jobs by promoting next-generation technologies. The idea is that these flexible displays could be used in windows displaying information say at a bus stations or other public places like a store. So while it appears the focus is currently on commercial applications, we for one have our hopes that we’ll one day be able to roll down a giant OLED screen where most might expect the screen for a projector.

Tech companies are no strangers to the game of follow the leader — industry imitation is, after all, the sincerest sign of a successful product. In the case of the Galaxy Note, Samsung’s phablet wonder has been enjoying some unexpected popularity in markets abroad and even here in the US. But the company’s ownership of that once-niche category is about to be contested by a surge of copycats, spearheaded by the stylus-toting LG Optimus Vu ($866 unlocked). It should go without saying: this 5-inch not-a-smartphone, not-yet-a-tablet has a steep climb ahead if it wants to oust or even claim equal billing with its successful opponent.

Of course, the Vu isn’t launching an attack on all fronts yet as, right now it’s a Korea-only affair running Android Gingerbread. (It redeems itself somewhat with an LTE radio.) Though the competition is welcome, the duel is not an even one, given the Vu’s unusual mix of internals: a 1,024 x 768 HD-IPS LCD display, dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor, 32GB of non-expandable storage, an ample 2,080mAh battery and a region-specific T-DMB TV tuner. But could that be enough to dethrone the current category king, or at least present a viable alternative? Join us after the break as we crack this rectangular nut and winnow out the marketing noise.

Just a few days ago we heard rumblings that LG was planning another high-end smartphone that would feature a quad-core processor and 10-megapixel camera, and now it looks like the company is about to release another LTE handset on Verizon. Engadget has scored pictures and specs for the VS930. It looks quite similar to the LG Optimus LTE II, and the specs are certainly nothing to sneeze at.

The phone will reportedly come with a 4.7-inch screen with a 720p IPS display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor clocked at 1.5Ghz, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, NFC, and global radio support on top of Verizon’s LTE. The phone will also come with an 8-megapixel camera, and come in at 9.2mm thick.

A leaked service manual for the phone indicates that it will be running Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, have a 2,150mAh battery, and that it may possibly be released very shortly on July 13th. Feast your eyes on the service manual in the meantime, and we’ll bring you the official announcement if the handset does indeed drop on the 13th.
