LG Optimus Vu 2 arriving this fall?

LG Optimus VuThe Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has been rumored to announce later this year and it looks like it might not be the only phablet in town. According to rumors online, LG will also be announcing the sequel to its large smartphone, the Optimus Vu. It will be called the Optimus Vu 2 and is said to be unveiled before this year’s IFA (where the Galaxy Note 2 is rumored to make its appearance). The Optimus Vu 2 is going to feature a 5″ 4:3 1024 x 768 display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It is also expected to hit the shelves in September or October.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note proved to the world that there’s a market for these humongous smartphones, so it’s going to be interesting to see if other companies can follow suit with their own devices. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted when we find out more.

Verizon LG VS930 cameos, is actually an Optimus LTE II?

What you see above is the LG VS930, although for those who are extremely knowledgeable about the world of smartphones, you would be quick to point out that it is also known by another name – that is, the Optimus LTE II. This handset does seem to be the latter for Verizon Wireless, and when you consider that the Optimus LTE II’s predecessor is the VS920, it makes perfect sense to call this the LG VS930 for continuity’s sake.

What are some of the specifications that you will find the LG VS930 deliver when you unbox it? For starters, it will have Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich as the operating system of choice, although we are quite sure that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean should be supported sometime down the road. Apart from that, there is also a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 SoC running proceedings from under the hood, accompanied by a 1280 x 720 pixel 4.7-inch “True HD IPS” display, 16GB of internal memory, global radio support (GSM/UMTS/CDMA/LTE),
NFC compatibility alongside programmable tags, and perhaps 2GB of RAM if the Optimus LTE II’s specifications are anything to go by.

Stay tuned for more word, especially in terms of pricing and availability.

Optimus LTE II makes a cameo on Verizon as LG VS930 (Updated)

Optimus LTE II makes a cameo on Verizon as LG VS930

Oh hello there, LG VS930. This handset — which was caught in the wild by Mr. Blurrycam’s cousin, Ms. Quickiecam — looks an awful lot like an Optimus LTE II for Verizon. This makes even more sense when you consider that its predecessor, the VS920 aka. Spectrum, recently received end-of-life status. According to the anonymous tipster who sent us these pictures, the phone will ship with the following features:

  • Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 SoC
  • 4.7-inch “True HD IPS” display (1280 x 720 pixels)
  • 16GB of built-in storage
  • Global radio support (GSM/UMTS/CDMA/LTE)
  • NFC (it comes with programmable tags)

There’s no word on whether the VS930 will inherit the Optimus LTE II’s 2GB of RAM [see update below] or the VS920’s branding — Spectrum 2 perhaps? We’ll keep you posted when we find out more, like pricing and availability. In the meantime, take a look at the gallery below for some closer shots.

Update: More information is coming to light about the VS930, including a possible July 13th launch and the service manual (PDF link), which contains a ton of photos and information. The 9.2mm (0.36-inches) thick handset features 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel autofocus camera.

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

LG quad-core L9 chipset arriving this September?

When it comes to smartphones these days, taking the dual-core route is just not quite enough. The quad-core route seems to be the next big thing, and consumer electronics giant LG from South Korea does not want to miss out on the bandwagon, having announced that they have every intention to release their very own quad-core L9 chipset sometime later this September. The LG L9 will boast of a quad-core ARM processor alongside a beefy GPU, albeit the architecture remains unannounced. The number ’9′ is there for a reason, as it does point towards the possibility of it being based on the older generation ARM Cortex-A9 cores, rather than the more recent Cortex-A15 architecture. All we need is plenty of patience and wait for September to roll around on our calendars, as we await for the truth to be uncovered. Expect at least a 10-megapixel camera and a True HD-IPS display on this puppy when it arrives! It should then be priced somewhere on the high end side, too.

LG Optimus 4X HD review: runner-up to the quad-core throne

DNP LG Optimus 4X HD review runnerup to the quadcore throne

LG has an ongoing smartphone problem: despite a few valiant efforts (the G2x comes to mind) the company continues to live in the shadow of rival Samsung. Most of this malaise can be attributed to hit-and-miss hardware combined with lackluster software (we’re looking at you, Spectrum). Last February, at Mobile World Congress, LG spiced things up with an attractive collection of devices including the Optimus L7, Optimus Vu and Optimus 4X HD — the latter being one of the first quad-core handsets announced. Now, six months later, we live in a world where the global versions of HTC’s One X and Samsung’s Galaxy S III dominate the superphone market and share the quad-core crown. With me-too features like a Tegra 3 processor, 4.7-inch HD display, 8-megapixel camera and Ice Cream Sandwich on board, the Optimus 4X HD appears ready to play in the big leagues. Does it succeed or is it just a flash in the pan? Is it all style over substance or does it bring something unique and meaningful to the table? Hit the break for our full review.

LG working on quad-core smartphone with 10MP camera

LG may just have launched the Optimux 4X HD, but it trailed behind the launches of the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III. The European versions of those phones featured quad-core processors and 8-megapixel cameras just like the 4X HD, but arguably had better construction and software customizations. The company isn’t satisfied, with LG’s chairman and co-CEO Koo Bon-moo planning a new phone that will feature a 10-megapixel camera.

Bon-moo is reportedly frustrated that LG didn’t make full use of the technology at its fingertips, and will be feeding direct input into the new device. Not much is known about the handset, except that it will feature a quad-core processor and 10-megapixel camera. The phone will reportedly go on sale in September.

LG currently supplies various electronic parts to companies like Apple, with some of the Retina displays in the latest iPad and next-generation MacBook Pro supplied by the South Korean company. Despite the fact that LG is keeping pace with the likes of HTC and Samsung spec-wise, its handsets haven’t gained the same kind of traction in the market. The company also recently revealed it would be sidelining tablets and focusing on smartphones in the near future.

AllThingsD: New Kindle Fire will feature 1,280 x 800 resolution, ship in Q3 2012

Rumors and scuttlebutt are already afoot: Amazon is ramping up to release a Kindle Fire successor later this year. It certainly seems reasonable enough; come November the original $200 slate will be a year old, outpaced by the young Nexus 7. According to AllThingsD, however, Amazon aims to keep things fresh — updating the tablet with a thinner profile, a 1,280 x 800 resolution display and a built-in camera. According to sources “familiar with Amazon’s plans,” the tablet is slated for a late Q3 launch, agreeing with its previously rumored July / August debut. The finer details — like the unit’s price and internal specs — are still MIA, but we’ll let you know if the rumor mill churns out anything new.

FCC Fridays July 6, 2012

We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we’ve gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!
