Facebook campaign for LG QuickMemo

LG Electronics has introduced a new social media marketing campaign for their special LG Mobile UX feature known as the LG QuickMemo, and this campaign will play the role of furthering the upcoming sporting season, what with the summer Olympics about to kick off pretty soon. Well, to celebrate this momentous occasion that happens only once every four years, LG Mobile will conduct a digital event dubbed “Take Dreams Further with QuickMemo”, where it will consist of two parts. The first event happens from July 6-18, where participants are able to show off their support for their favorite athletes or friends who are seeking to achieve personal goals, leaving them encouraging messages via the virtual QuickMemo on LG Mobile’s Facebook page.

As for the remaining part of the campaign, fans are able to participate in an interactive game on the LG Mobile Facebook fan page, letting you create your very own personal moments in soccer, gymnastics and track events. These moments will then be shared with your mates using the virtual QuickMemo. There are prizes up for grabs, so if you think that a new Optimus smartphone would look handsome enough in your pocket, what are you waiting for? [Press Release]

LG Prada 3.0 receives Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update in Germany and Italy

Italy, the losing finalists in the recently concluded Euro 2012 championships, as well as Germany who lost to Italy in the semi-finals, have at least something to cheer about – both countries will have owners of the LG Prada 3.0 receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. This is definitely a jump up from the Android 2.3.7 version when it rolled out via T-Mobile UK in February earlier this year.

This is not a simple Over The Air (OTA) update, so you will need to be extra careful. First of all, you will need to plug your LG Prada 3.0 smartphone into a Windows-powered computer, and then fire up the LG Mobile Phone Support tool which works only in a Windows environment. For folks who are rocking to the Mac platform, that means you will still need to find someone else who owns a Windows PC. The entire updating process on the LG Prada 3.0 will require just a few minutes of your life, but as usual, a backup of all your data comes across highly recommended before you start anything. After all, you can never quite tell just when Murphy and his law will strike.

Amazon’s new Kindle Fire set to debut in early August? (update: maybe July)

Amazon's new Kindle Fire set to debut in early August

We knew that there would be another Kindle Fire at some point, but we didn’t know when it would arrive, or exactly what it’d look like. If the latest report from the China Times is true, however, we can expect Amazon’s new slate to ship around August 7th. Like the first Fire, this new version will be built by Quanta, with a metal chassis and displays provided by LG and Panasonic. Other details, like its size or the contents within said metallic frame, are still nowhere to be found. What we can tell you is that the new tablet can’t get here fast enough for Amazon given the Fire’s declining sales numbers and its fresh competition from Mountain View.

Update: Looks like something was lost in translation — it turns out the China Times report actually states that the new Kindle Fire is set to make its appearance in July or August, not specifically on August 7th.

ComScore: iOS and Android market share continues to climb, RIM and Motorola continue to fall

ComScore iOS and Android market share continues to climb, RIM and Motorola continue to fall

Ready for some hardcore smartphone market share numbers? ComScore’s got ’em for the three-month period ending in May 2012, and you probably won’t be terribly surprised by the outcome. First, let’s tackle smartphone platforms: Apple and Google posted minor increase month-over-month at 0.5 and 0.1 percent, respectively (1.7 and 0.8 over a three-month span). Microsoft (consisting of Windows Phone and Windows Mobile) didn’t budge between April and May, though it nudged up a tenth of a percentage point since February. RIM dropped 0.2 percent over one month, but it already experienced a much more painful sting — 2.0 percent — during the three-month period. Symbian also went through similar concerns, going down 0.2 percent month-over-month and 0.4 percent since February.

As for specific manufacturers, Apple once again comes out on top, adding 1.5 percent to its customer base over the last three months for a total of 15 percent share. Samsung, still leading the pack in total market share at 25.7 percent, only grew by 0.1. Given the OEM’s success in deploying the Galaxy S III to every major US carrier, we suspect that number will spurt up even higher over the next quarter. Among the companies losing share: LG, Motorola and HTC, losing 0.3, 0.8 and 0.2 percent, respectively.

FCC Fridays: June 29, 2012

FCC Fridays June 29, 2012

We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we’ve gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!

LG Optimus L7 review: a beautiful, entry-level Android 4.0 smartphone with LG’s new UI 3.0

DNP LG Optimus L7 review a beautiful, entrylevel Android 40 smartphone that introduces LG UI 30

Consider your last trip to the car dealership. Let’s say you saved up and hit up BMW. While you might’ve looked at — or even test driven — the M3, there’s a good chance that your better judgment (and your budget) led you to drive off of the lot with a 328i. Sure, it’s only got a four-cylinder engine inside, but the car offers great handling and good gas mileage. Better yet, you didn’t have to spend an atrocious amount of money to get behind the wheel. The same goes with mobile phones. While it’s fun to dream of owning a One X, a Galaxy S III or an Optimus 4X HD, they’re called superphones for a reason: they cater to power-hungry individuals with a fair amount of disposable income. Like supercars, they’re designed to bring people into the store, even if shoppers ultimately leave with something else in hand.

Enter the LG Optimus L7. Positioned at the higher end of the company’s entry-level lineup, it aims to be the 328i of smartphones. Sure, no one’s lining up to drool over it, but LG is aiming for this to be a practical choice with just enough elegance and pizzaz to keep consumers grinning. Of course, that sweet spot is difficult to achieve, and we’ve seen plenty of smartphone manufacturers miss the mark in attempting to balance performance and amenities with a palatable price. So, does the Optimus L7 rise to the challenge? We’ve spent the past week with it as our daily driver, and we’re ready to make the call. Read on for the answer.

LG Optimus Vu could hit Verizon

Our pals at the FCC have let slip what appears to be a new version of the smartphone from LG called the Optimus Vu. The line art on the left-hand side of the image below is clearly the back panel of the Optimus Vu. In place of the LG logo, you’ll note a model number and the 4G LTE logo.

That model number LG-VS950. The 4G logo and other details from the filing tip that the Optimus Vu is heading to the Verizon network. None of the FCC images or documents point to the name Optimus Vu, so it could be the name will be changed when the smartphone hits the Verizon network. It is certainly not uncommon for smartphones to change names depending on the carrier.

The FCC filing also shows that the smartphone has NFC and operates on LTE band 13. It also has integrated GSM 850/1900 MHz compatibility. Assuming all the hardware is the same, the device will pack a 1.5 GHz dual core Snapdragon processor, a five-inch IPS screen sporting a resolution of 768 x 1024, and 1 GB of RAM. The Optimus Vu we already know also has 32 GB of storage, and eight-megapixel camera on the back, a 1.3-megapixel camera with front, and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. That operating system is certainly stale by most accounts, but ICS updates are inbound.

LG VS950 hits the FCC with Verizon LTE, looks suspiciously like the Optimus Vu

LG VS950 hits the FCC with Verizon LTE, looks suspiciously like the Optimus Vu

LG and Verizon have something special in the works, and judging from the information we were able to glean from some mysterious documents submitted to the FCC (and subsequently approved today), it appears to be Big Red’s version of the Optimus Vu. While the docs don’t come out and specifically mention the Vu name or the phone’s iconic 5-inch display, the diagram (seen above) of the LG VS950 shows the exact same speaker grille setup on the lower left as well as the SIM flap on the upper right. But if that weren’t enough to clue us in, you can clearly see something that looks curiously like an antenna on the top left — in the very same place as the Korean Optimus Vu. The VS950 sports NFC and offers LTE band 13 and GSM 850 / 1900. The phone’s already received Bluetooth Certification, so we’re hoping this means it’s in the final stages of testing. Let’s just hope it comes with a newer version of firmware than its Korean counterpart.
