LG Optimus G2: so thin it can’t use buttons

If you weren’t excited about the next edition of LG’s hero device by now, the following news should spark your interest: apparently this smartphone is going to be so thin that it wont have room for a power button or volume buttons around its sides. With news of the LG Optimus G2 coming in from South Korean news sources that may or may not be entirely reliable, the concept certainly seems intriguing enough to be possible: could it be? The framework of this next-generation device is said to be such that the left, right, top, and bottom will have a completely non-traditional button layout.

sadfds

While the LG Optimus G was so impressive that Google hired LG to make them their own in the Google Nexus 4, the G2 has to step things up a notch. With the 2013 wave of smartphones out-doing the G with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 processors (in the HTC One and Samsung GALAXY S 4), it wont just be the body that’s getting a cut. LG has also been tipped to be including Qualcomm’s best yet: the Snapdragon 800.

The LG Optimus G2 is being quoted as containing the following today, straight from the source speaking with MyDrivers. The physical design of this device may be the biggest change, but the final build will be one heck of a whopper!

LG Optimus G2

• 5-inch display, 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution
• 13 megapixel camera back-facing, 2.1 megapixel front
• Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor
• Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
• LG User Interface
• Worldwide Launch

Have a peek at our LG Optimus G Pro hands-on experience as well as our original review of the LG Optimus G and get ready for the next coming of LG. This device should be revealed by the time Summer has begun, but no confirmation has yet been given by LG. Stay tuned!

LG Offers Optimus G Sequel This Q3

LG Offers Optimus G Sequel This Q3We do know that LG will be holding a press event this coming May 1st, which did lead to the question whether that would signal the launch of the LG Optimus G Pro. Well, it seems that the South Korean consumer electronics giant has more tricks up their proverbial sleeve, as it seems that LG might launch a new sequel to the Optimus G smartphone sometime in the third quarter of the year, which would be very different from the Optimus G Pro assuming it launches this May, which happens to be the second quarter of the year.

LG head of marketing, Won Kim, mentioned to Engadget that this particular new device will be “something different and something unique,” which means it could very well deliver far more than a mere increase in processing firepower, but rather, we could see a shift to a greater degree of refinement in design and features. There are no additional details concerning the possible device when pressed further. What do you think that this potential smoking hot LG smartphone would incorporate to make it be different and unique?

LG Curved OLED Televisions To Go On Sale In Second Half Of The Year

LG Curved OLED Televisions To Go On Sale In Second Half Of The YearEarlier this year at CES 2013, we came across a rather interesting setup by LG which was a trio of curved 3D OLED televisions. While it appeared to be quite an engineering feat, LG did not state if they were planning on releasing the television to the masses, or if it was simply a display of their engineering prowess. In any case for those who thought it would be cool to own such a device, you’re in luck as LG has announced that the curved OLED televisions will indeed be going on sale sometime in the second half of the year. While they did not state where the television would first launch, it is speculated that it could probably kick off in South Korea before the company decides that there is enough demand to warrant taking it to other parts of the world. No word on pricing either, but considering that this is something of a new technology, we don’t expect them to come cheap.

LG’s Curved OLED TVs Are Actually Going on Sale

When LG showed off the first curved 3D OLED screen at CES earlier this year, it was sure exciting—but seemed unrealistic as a commercial venture. Now, though, LG has announced that it’s planning to sell the curvy TV. More »

AT&T to launch PMA-wireless charging capable smartphones by 2014

The Power Matters Alliance has just received a huge increase in support from several, major businesses. HTC, LG, and Samsung, 3 of the most biggest smartphone manufacturers in the world, have joined the PAM, and will be integrating its wireless charging technology in their future devices. With these new additions, AT&T plans on launching smartphones with PMA-wireless charging technology integrated into them by 2014.

HTC LG Samsung join wireless charging alliance

Alongside these new additions, there are several other companies who are part of the PMA. Blackberry, NEC, Texas Instruments, IDT, NXP, ZTE, and Kyocera have all joined the alliance and are planning on implementing the wireless technology into their devices later on. Accessory makers Incipio, Sketch, and Otterbox are also following the lead of these companies, and will be launching wireless-charging capable accessories in the future.

PMA has become commonplace all around the world. It has over 1,500 charging spots all throughout the United States, located in various Starbucks locations, airports, and places like Madison Square Garden and The Garden State Plaza Mall. It’s starting to spread globally as well, including various McDonalds located across Europe. At these select McDonalds, all you need to do is place your wireless-charging capable handset on a McDonalds table to begin charging your device.

Previously, PowerKiss, the company that would be equipping McDonalds’s tables with wireless charging technology, planned on using Qi’s wireless charging technology to execute its plan, but it has dropped Qi in favor of the Power Matters Alliance. Many companies are starting to see the PMA as the new standard of choice for wireless charging. In just the past 5 months alone, its membership increased over 10x.

LG Optimus G sequel coming Q3 2013, will stick close to 5-inch screen size

LG’s been teasing a big reveal for the start of May over in the US and we reckon it’ll mark the official launch of the Optimus G Pro. But what about the not-so-humble Optimus G and the rest of the world? Well, we’ve been told that a (global-bound!) sequel flagship from LG will appear sometime in Q3. Direct from LG’s HQ in Seoul, Won Kim, Head of Mobile Marketing says that we can expect “something different and something unique”, which all sounds good to us. It’ll also be something that won’t skirt near the 5.5-inch screen size of the Optimus G Pro, and will instead stick closer to the five-inch mark. Unfortunately, he kept his explanation of new device tantalizingly vague for now, but it looks like LG will wait for the current flagship phone fight to settle a bit before it reveals its new weapon.

LG’s curved OLED displays to arrive in the second half of 2013

Alongside its wafer-thin 4K TVs, LG’s curved OLED display was another product that occupies a special place in our CES memories. Fortunate, then, that the product has taken a step away from vaporware, with the company’s Vice President of Home Entertainment Europe, Thomas Lee, confirming that its “world-first” curved OLED TVs will launch in the second half of this year. Given the Korean firm’s tendency to test new models closer to home, we’d suspect this would be a native launch, but given that the company’s 55-inch OLED display made it into at least one store outside of Korea, we wouldn’t count out seeing an overseas retail appearance soon after.

LG Washing Machine Needs No Water To Run

LG Washing Machine Needs No Water To RunSo, we did talk about how LG rolled out the latest version of their vacuum cleaner that could respond to the clarion call of your voice – which is going to be more than a novelty, and it would also work great for those who love living in futuristic conditions. Well, the next time you want to consider picking up a washing machine, perhaps it would bode you well to fork out money for a new washing machine from LG that get this – does not use water at all in its operation.

A washing machine that uses no water? What kind of sorcery is this? Senior Vice President for LG Electronics Home Appliance Division, Kevin Cha, did not want to share anything more about this particular washing machine, on whether it will be completely waterless or virtually waterless, but we do know that it is on its way to the market, never mind that right now, it remains in the early stages of development and will be a trade secret – hopefully not for long, though.

HTC, Huawei, LG and Samsung join Power Matters Alliance, AT&T pledges wireless charging by 2014

The Power Matters Alliance (PMA) just scored another major boost. AT&T has announced that it will integrate wireless charging within select smartphones by 2014. Those TBA handsets may be manufactured by BlackBerry, ZTE, or any of the organization’s latest members: HTC, Huawei, LG and Samsung. Notably absent is Apple, so don’t expect PMA-compatible devices to make their way out of Cupertino anytime soon, but with chipset makers like Broadcom and Texas Instruments on board, we could very well be seeing quite a few handsets pop up by early next year. Integration may be implemented directly within the chipset, or it could be delivered through an add-on device, such as the Wireless Charging Card (WiCC) in the image above.

A PMA membership doesn’t necessarily represent a commitment from manufacturers to release products that support the technology — joining the alliance requires just “a few thousand dollars” in dues, but Duracell Powermat President Daniel Schreiber seems confident that all of the smartphone makers now on board will have releases of their own in the near future. The next step, of course, would be a widespread rollout of PMA-compatible charging stations, such as those manufactured by Powermat and installed in Boston Starbucks stores and Madison Square Garden in NYC. PowerKiss, which has begun similar trials in Europe, also joined the PMA recently, and may have compatible devices in place in several McDonald’s restaurants and train stations throughout the continent by the second half of this year.
