AT&T LG Optimus G Jelly Bean update rolling out today

AT&T announced today that they are beginning to roll out Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean for the LG Optimus G. Rumors have been flying around just recently about the possibility of the device receiving the latest Android version, but AT&T has made it official. Those wielding an Optimus G should be seeing the update show up soon.

Jelly Bean comes with some impressive improvements compared to Ice Cream Sandwich. Jelly Bean users can take advantage of improved notifications, Google Now, and some UI tweaks that make performance a lot smoother thanks to Project Butter. However, the AT&T update specifically comes with support for Isis Mobile Wallet, which is available to use in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah.

AT&T also mentions that the LG Optimus G is the “official mobile device of NCAA March Madness,” which is still going on now, with the final four teams ready to face off this Saturday. As for what this means for Optimus G users, you’ll be able to watch the games using the March Madness Live app, and the only requirement is that you have to login using your cable subscription credentials.

In any case, if you don’t see the update automatically hitting your Optimus G, you can head to Menu -> Settings -> General -> About phone -> Software Update and see if the update has made its way to you. If it has, simply connect to a WiFi network and off you’ll go. Be sure to tell us how you like it in the comments below.

ComScore: Apple up to 39 percent US smartphone share in February, Android on top at 52 percent

ComScore Apple was up to 39 percent smartphone share in February, Android on top at 52 percent

While there’s no question that Android is thriving on the global scale, the situation is a little more complicated in the US when looking at ComScore’s market share data for February. The platform is still comfortably ahead in the American smartphone sphere at 51.7 percent, but the figure represents the second consecutive dip in recent months, and roughly matches share that we saw back in June. Apple is headed in the opposite direction and appears to be the main beneficiary of Google’s drop, albeit at a less-than-breakneck pace: the iPhone continued a gradual climb in February that put it at 38.9 percent. We’re not surprised that BlackBerry declined once more in its last month before the Z10 reached the US, although Microsoft will be happy to hear that Windows Phone inched forward again to 3.2 percent.

Among individual smartphone makers, it’s more of a familiar story. Apple’s platform control gave it the lead at 38.9 percent, while Samsung at 21.3 percent was hovering roughly around the same share it had in January. As for everyone else? It’s a bit ugly, to be honest. HTC, Motorola and LG all lost share in February, leaving the US firmly in a two-horse race. That said, we wouldn’t be surprised if the market plays a different tune around April and May: with 2013 Android flagships like the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4 just around the corner, there’s room for a potential upset.

LG Pocket Photo debuts in the UK

If you happen to live in the UK, you might want to make a beeline to The Gadget Show Live 2013, as that is where the LG Pocket Photo would make its debut across the pond, allowing consumers to have an alternative when it comes to a creative mobile photo printing experience. The LG Pocket Photo is a mobile printer as you can tell by its name, where it is touted to deliver high quality photo prints without having to be bogged down by wires and other kinds of nasty cables, hence making it the ideal companion for Android powered as well as iOS powered smartphones. After all, are we not an extremely visual tribe these days, capturing just about anything and everything on our smartphones with a mountain of data to clean up afterwards?

In order to get started with the LG Pocket Photo, all you need to do is download the LG Pocket Photo app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, and you are good to go after installation. Once you have performed the relevant kind of image edits on the captured photo from the device itself, or even embedded a QR code of your choice, go ahead and print it out, and your eyes will be pleasantly surprised by the kind of results that you see.

Not only that, you are also able to share photos on social media platforms as well as taking the more direct online route, straight from the LG Pocket Photo itself. Just what kind of wireless bridge does the LG Pocket Photo use to communicate with your mobile devices? Well, I see that it will most probably fall back on Bluetooth connectivity to get the job done, and for those with more advanced handsets, there is also Near Field Communication (NFC) thrown into the mix for easy, one-touch printing. You won’t have to worry about expensive and potentially messy ink cartridges with the LG Pocket Photo though, as it makes use of inkless printing technology from ZINK.

Japan Gets LG Optimus G Pro

Japan Gets LG Optimus G Pro If you so happen to live in the Land of the Rising Sun, then you will be pleased to hear that folks over there have already gotten hold of the LG Optimus G Pro, which is to follow in the footsteps of their brethren living in South Korea. South Koreans naturally gave the LG Optimus G Pro quite a warm reception, and LG might be keeping their fingers crossed that they too, will be able to obtain a similar level of warmth from the Japanese, or at least folks living in that region. NTT DoCoMo will be the mobile carrier of choice to offer the LG Optimus G Pro, but there is one difference between it and the South Korean model – the display has shrunk to 5” instead of 5.5”.

Still, the 5” display should be enough for most users, considering how it continues to retain the Full HD resolution, running on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice on top of a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 Processor, accompanied by 2GB RAM, has a 13-megapixel shooter at the back and a 2-megapixel shooter in front, with a 3,000mAh battery ensuring adequate power supply for the day. Just in case its 32GB of internal memory is not enough, there is also a microSD memory card slot thrown into the mix. [Press Release (Korean)]

LG’s 5-inch Optimus G Pro launches in Japan

LG's 5-inch Optimus G Pro launches in Japan

South Korea gave the Optimus G Pro a reasonably warm reception after debuting, and now LG’s hoping to pull off a similar victory in Japan. Those in the Land of the Rising Sun can now pick up the smartphone from NTT DoCoMo. Though the handset bears the same name as its Korean counterpart, it forgoes a 5.5-inch 1080p display for a smaller 5-inch screen with the same resolution. In case you’re in need of a refresher, the hardware runs Jelly Bean 4.1.2 on a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 Processor and 2GB of RAM flanked by a 3,000mAh battery, 13-megapixel rear shooter, 2.1-megapixel front-facing cam, 32GB of built-in memory and a microSD slot. LG still hasn’t pinned down just when in Q2 the phone will launch in North America, but with a Japanese release behind it, a US arrival shouldn’t be far off.

AT&T LG Optimus G Receives Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Update

AT&T LG Optimus G Receives Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean UpdateSprint introduced the Android Jelly Bean for a variant of the LG Optimus G in March this year, and it seems that rival mobile carrier AT&T is going to follow in their footsteps as well, serving up a nice dose of Jelly Bean goodness for the LG Optimus G. Of course, there was no official fanfare or announcement made, although there were owners of the LG Optimus G who ride with AT&T and they have shared a fair amount of tips as well as screenshots like the one you see above, showing that this is no belated April Fool’s joke, but rather, the real deal itself.

So, LG Optimus G owners on AT&T, how has your smartphone fared so far? Have you received the official update Over The Air automatically? I am quite sure that if this is the case for some folks, an official confirmation should be well on its way in due time, all we need to do now is sit tight and play the patience game. Of course, it would not hurt either to perform manual checks on your device for the new software.

LG Optimus G on AT&T starts seeing Android 4.1.2 updates (update: official)

DNP AT&T's LG Optimus G Jelly Bean update

Last month, Sprint served up a dose of Jelly Bean for its variant of LG’s Optimus G, and today it appears that AT&T is following suit. We’ve received a flurry of tips and screenshots like the one above denoting that Ma Bell is slowly starting to trickle out Android 4.1.2 to its Optimus G owners. Seeking confirmation, we’ve reached out to AT&T and will provide an update of our own once we receive official word on the matter. Until then, if you’re rocking an Optimus G on Big Blue’s network, now might be the time to manually check your device for new software.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: It’s official — the Jelly Bean rollout has begun on Big Blue’s network. Along with the usual upgrades associated with the OS, AT&T’s over-the-air patch enables Isis mobile payments for those who happen to live in Austin or Salt Lake City.
