LG outs Jelly Bean update itinerary (for the Korean market, anyway)

DNP LG outs Jelly Bean update itinerary

LG has released a schedule for the Optimus VU, VU II, G and LTE II to get Jelly Beaned with the latest Android 4.1.1 flavor — at least in its home market, Korea. It’ll start next month with the Optimus LTE II and continue in December with the Optimus G, a device we’ve pawed a number of times. The first quarter of 2013 will see refreshes for the Optimus VU and VU II, both 5-inch 4 x 3 aspect ratio models, the latter of which was only recently launched. There’s no word on how that’ll translate to stateside model upgrades, which of course depend on the vagaries of US carriers — and we all know how that goes.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 12, 2012

Welcome to Friday, folks. The weekend is here once again, and what better way to kick off the festivities than with a Windows 8 purchase? The new OS went up for pre-order today, while a number of other Windows 8-related stories were popping up all over the place. For instance, we found out that the marketing campaign for Windows 8 cost Microsoft a whopping $1.5 billion, and a collection of HP computers were spotted running Windows 8 on the show floor of one Best Buy store in Minnesota.

Dell is getting in early on the Windows 8 action, opening up pre-orders for a handful of new machines today, and we learned that a staggering 6 billion people around the world are now using a mobile phone of some type. A leaked T-Mobile release roadmap gives us an idea of when the carrier expects to receive a bunch of different devices, including the Windows Phone 8X. We received a rather in-depth look at an LG Nexus prototype today, and LG delivered a brand new Optimus G “product movie” that aims to get us familiar with the new handset’s features. Netflix released a Windows 8-compatible version of its app today, just ahead of the launch of the OS.

Google could be headed for an antitrust case from the FTC, and it seems that the Apple Maps controversy hasn’t done much to damage consumer enthusiasm for the iPhone 5. Speaking of the iPhone 5, Apple’s latest mobile offering has managed to overtake the Samsung Galaxy S III in web traffic despite being available for a much shorter amount of time, and Google is getting the Play Store ready for the holiday rush. SoftBank is looking to secure $23 billion to buy a majority stake in Sprint, and industry insiders are claiming that the long-rumored iPad Mini will be revealed on October 23 – just a couple weeks from now.

Star Citizen has already managed to raise an absurd $500,000 in funding, while Borderlands 2 was seen outshining its predecessor in a pretty significant way. We learned that the games industry is still on the decline, and ASUS unveiled a brand new Windows 8 VivoBook today. Amazon is now posting a disclaimer about the Kindle Paperwhite’s backlighting, YouTube is rethinking the way it ranks videos for search results, and Anonymous has cut ties with Wikileaks after the website started restricting access and asking visitors for donations.

Finally tonight, we have an unboxing and hands-on with the Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD for you to check out, and Chris Burns tells us why every little piece of Apple news seems to matter so much these days. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, here’s hoping that this weekend is a good one!

LG Optimus G “product movie” released

LG‘s most anticipated device yet is about to hit the US next month. The Optimus G will be the company’s flagship phone, and they created this four-minute-long “product movie” that showcases some of the more notable features of the Optimus G, like QSlide and the camera’s Live Shot and Time Catch Shot features.

The video is fairly odd in a way, and features dancing, archery, and weird hand-waving. However, it all has a purpose, and that’s to show off the LG Optimus G in an artsy kind of way that viewers might enjoy. The “movie” is four minutes long, and is split up into different advertisement spots of various lengths.

The device itself doesn’t get a lot of camera time, so we’re mostly succumbed to the interpretive dancing and the shirtless, muscular archers. However, throughout the video LG gives us a quick briefing of all the features coming to the new device narrated by wavy hand gestures that would put a magician to shame.

The LG Optimus G will come packing with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage. The display is a 4.7-inch True HD IPS+ screen that offers a 1280×768 WXGA resolution. We certainly wouldn’t mind one of these devices in our hands, and you can check out the device more by checking out our hands on.

NTT DoCoMo opens Japanese pre-orders for the LG Optimus G L-01E tomorrow, sales start October 19th

NTT DoCoMo opens Japanese preorders for the LG Optimus G L01E tomorrow, sales start October 19th

LG revealed Japan’s NTT DoCoMo would be the first carrier to offer its Optimus G (which it’s been proud enough to announce more than once) and now we have an exact date. Pre-orders for the L-01E start tomorrow ahead of it going on sale October 19th, bringing its quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon CPU, 4.7-inch True HD IPS LCD, 13MP camera, Android 4.0 packaged with the waterproofing, DMB tuning and FeLiCa wallet support local buyers will expect. While we wait for release details in the US on AT&T and Sprint (or another leak of that supposed LG Nexus phone) you can check out the red and black variants rolling out across the Pacific.

LG Nexus 4 smartphone launch tipped for October 29th

If you’re waiting for the next Nexus smartphone from Google with their own stripped-down version of Android (in whatever iteration they choose to deliver), you’ll not be waiting more than a month. A tip from French publication Le Figaro has delivered an inside source with a carrier source they’ve been speaking with anonymously that the 29th of October will be the availability date for the next-generation LG Nexus 4, with a December release date up for France specifically.

With an international release date of the 29th being tipped here, we must assume that Google will have the device for sale up on its Google Play web store rather quickly afterward with world phone capabilities. Here in the USA we’re expecting at least a device capable of working with AT&T and T-Mobile bands. If the past is any indication, this LG smartphone will also be sent to Verizon with 4G LTE in addition to AT&T’s 4G LTE network early on.

This LG device has been tipped as being based on the LG Optimus G, a quad-core processor-toting smartphone introduced rather recently internationally as well. The LG Optimus G is also coming to AT&T here in the United States as well as Sprint, the former getting an iteration with an 8 megapixel camera and the latter grabbing the 13 megapixel version of the device. Here with the LG Nexus 4 we’re expecting another 8 megapixel shooter simply based on the alleged leaked photos of the device and its thinness compared to the 13 megapixel toting Optimus G.

The All Things D conference Dive Into Mobile will be hosting Andy Rubin at the end of this month, this very possibly being the location at which the LG Nexus device will be revealed. If this is true, Google may have made an extraordinary effort with LG to not only keep this device a secret, but to release it at the same time as announcing it as well. This is relatively unprecedented in the Google/Android univer.

LG Optimus G for Sprint hands-on (update: video)

LG Optimus G for Sprint handson

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but we had the opportunity to get our hands on the LG Optimus G… again. This would make the excursion lucky number four for Engadget, but this one is a touch on the unique side since it’s heading directly to Sprint at some point in the not-too-distant future. Here’s what we knew up until today: like the Korean versions, this particular flavor of the G — also known as the LS970 — will feature a 13MP rear camera (AT&T’s will only sport an 8MP module), and otherwise carries the same set of features such as a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB RAM, 1.3MP front-facing camera, 32GB internal storage, 2,100mAh battery and 4.7-inch 1280×768 True HD IPS PLUS display. Much like it did on the Motorola Photon Q, Sprint has elected to keep its carrier-specific branding off of the device (it’s doing this so the handset can make its way to the network’s prepaid brands with relative ease), but we were disappointed to see that the SIM card is once again embedded and not accessible without taking the entire phone apart. Aside from these cosmetic differences there’s not much that sets it apart from the international models — something that is a pleasure to see, instead of the standard carrier practice of tweaking OEM designs to their own whimsy.

The performance expectations set by the Korean Optimus G seem to be met here, with the 1.5GHz quad-core Krait processor running the show. Despite the G using a custom build of Ice Cream Sandwich (which will be upgraded to Jelly Bean soon, according to Sprint), we were highly satisfied with how quick everything was during our time with the device — it truly acts and feels the same as its overseas counterpart. The downside that you’ll find with Sprint — as you might imagine — is Sprint’s infant LTE network; customers getting this phone in a city not blanketed by the next-gen network will find themselves frustrated with lackluster EVDO speeds. To get a closer look at the Now Network’s flavor of the Optimus G, go below to see a full gallery of images and then head past the break for a video tour.

Sprint adds LG Mach, Optimus G, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and tri-mode USB dongle to fall LTE lineup

Sprint adds two LG phones, the Galaxy Tablet 2 101 and a USB dongle to its LTE lineup

If simple vanity trinkets don’t excite you, Sprint has something else to tempt you in — four new LTE devices. The new line-up includes two phones, a tablet and a USB dongle, so hopefully something for everyone. The phones? The 13-megapixel toutin’ Optimus G (as we suspected) and Mach (a cheaper, 1.2GHz dual-core, 4-inch, 1080p capable QWERTY ICS phone), both by LG. If you need a little more screen real-estate, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will be joining the other Koreans with its 1.5GHz dual-cores and 1,200 x 800-screened ICS on the good ship Sprint too. Happy with your notebook, and just want the service? Sprint’s adding a Plug-in-Connect USB dongle to the menu also. No deets on cost and dates we’re afraid, with “fall” being all the info we’ve got right now. Feel free to delve into the PR after the break, in the meantime though.

LG E960 Mako surfaces in photos, may be the future Nexus phone (update)

LG E960 Mako surfaces in photos, may be the future Nexus phone update

Rumors have been swirling that LG will get its first crack at a Nexus phone this year. If there’s any merit to that claim, we might have just received an early peek. An XDA-Developers forum goer has posted a collection of photos for the E960, which appears to be a variant of the Optimus G — until you realize that it’s using software navigation keys, doesn’t quite resemble the international or AT&T Optimus G models and is oddly badged as the “Full JellyBean on Mako.” Given that Google likes to name its reference Android phones after fish, it doesn’t take much to suspect that a device codenamed Mako is more likely to become a Nexus than an Optimus. The completely stock but unreleased Android 4.1.2 build of Jelly Bean certainly helps fuel the rumor mill. If the E960 does carry Google’s honorific, though, some may be in for a disappointment knowing that the model that reached the FCC last week doesn’t have LTE. We won’t rule out that this is one of multiple Nexus variants, if it’s a Nexus at all, but the 3G edition’s filing hints that Google may not rock the boat for its 2012 flagship.

Update: More images have surfaced, this time with the anti-spy casing removed from the back of the phone. Click past the break for more.

LG Optimus Nexus specs leak, no microSD slot or removable battery

It’s well rumored that LG is making their own Nexus device on behalf of Google, but whether or not it’s the only Nexus device that we’ll see this fall is still up for questioning. However, more specs were leaked today about LG’s rumored and upcoming Optimus Nexus that are actually quite shocking and not what you’d expect.

Specifically, the Optimus Nexus is said to come in 8GB and 16GB flavors, but there will not be a microSD card slot anywhere on the phone, nor will there be a removable battery. This definitely comes at surprised to us since it’s almost a standard that all Android devices come with a microSD slot and a removable battery nowadays — two features that are huge selling points for Android. However, we might see wireless charging capabilities in the Optimus Nexus, so not all is lost.

We already know the Optimus Nexus will be based on LG’s Optimus G that we heard about a few weeks ago. The upcoming Nexus device is said to have most of the same specs as the Optimus G, including a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, and an 8MP rear camera, all packed in tightly under a 4.7-inch 1280×768 True-HD IPS display.

The Optimus Nexus is said to hit the market mid-November. The Optimus G is already confirmed for AT&T, no price or availability details were disclosed, but if rumors are true, we should be seeing it sometime next month. Hopefully we’ll see the next Nexus device by then as well.

LG Optimus G for AT&T hands-on (video)

LG Optimus G for AT&T handson

Well, we’re finally getting a look at the US edition of LG’s Optimus G and surprise, surprise, it’s not that terribly different from the version we got to play with in both Korea and NYC last month. We’re still looking at that stunning 4.7-inch 1280×768 True HD IPS PLUS display, a speedy Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, a hefty 2,100mAh battery and 16GB storage — on this model, at least. But what, if anything, has changed on this Android 4.0 handset now that it’s here in the US cruising along on AT&T’s LTE network? Keep reading after the break to find out.
