LG outs Jelly Bean update itinerary (for the Korean market, anyway)

DNP LG outs Jelly Bean update itinerary

LG has released a schedule for the Optimus VU, VU II, G and LTE II to get Jelly Beaned with the latest Android 4.1.1 flavor — at least in its home market, Korea. It’ll start next month with the Optimus LTE II and continue in December with the Optimus G, a device we’ve pawed a number of times. The first quarter of 2013 will see refreshes for the Optimus VU and VU II, both 5-inch 4 x 3 aspect ratio models, the latter of which was only recently launched. There’s no word on how that’ll translate to stateside model upgrades, which of course depend on the vagaries of US carriers — and we all know how that goes.

LG Optimus Vu II arrives to battle Note II

The fight of the phablets continues, with LG rolling out the new Optimus Vu II to take on Samsung’s second-gen Galaxy Note II. The 5-inch Vu II keeps the unusual 4:3 aspect ratio of the original Vu – which we reviewed in Verizon LG Intuition form – but slims the bezels to make a phone that’s 7mm shorter and 5mm wider; there’s also VoLTE for voice calls over 4G in addition to high-speed data, and a new, second-gen “Rubberdium Pen 2.0″ stylus.

That new pen has a slimmer nib for more accurate handwriting, and is paired with LG’s Q Memo app for digital notetaking that can sync with an LG notebook and also be printed. Inside, there’s a 1.5GHz dualcore Qualcomm processor and 2GB of RAM running Android – version unspecified – along with a 2,150 mAh removable battery and memory card slot.

LG will offer a couple of more unusual accessories with the Vu II, including a wireless charging pad, and a “One Key” remote that, at the touch of a button, will make the smartphone beep just in case you’ve lost it down the back of the couch. The waterproof One Key also includes a multicolor LED, which flashes to show calls, messages, charging status, and other alerts.

In Korea, meanwhile, there’ll be integrated DMB digital TV reception, with the ability to view TV and other apps on-screen at the same time using the same system as in the Optimus G. There’ll also be Q Translator to translate  dozens of languages using the camera.

No word on when the Optimus Vu II might go on sale, nor for how much, at this stage.

LG Intuition review: Optimus Deja Vu with a Verizon LTE twist

LG Intuition review Optimus Deja Vu with a Verizon LTE twist

It’s not uncommon for US carriers to take an international smartphone under their wings, make a few adjustments to hardware and firmware, stamp their fat logos in multiple places and then sell it to the masses. Verizon is no exception: the LG Intuition is its interpretation of the Optimus Vu, a 5-inch phablet we reviewed over the summer. Perhaps calling it an “interpretation” is a bit of an overstatement: aside from a bump in firmware and Big Red’s LTE, it is the Optimus Vu. In fact, going into this review, we had a difficult time believing our experience would be much different than our run-in with the Korean version.

Our first reaction is that this doesn’t bode well for the carrier. If Verizon opted for the Intuition in order to fill a gaping hole in its lineup, we have a hard time understanding why it would choose to greenlight this particular device with the Samsung Galaxy Note II coming within the next two months. The device’s quiet launch is a solid enough indication that the network isn’t planning on throwing a lot marketing dollars behind it, so it feels as though the Intuition’s main reason for existing is to bolster Verizon’s rapidly expanding LTE portfolio. Is there something intriguing about the Intuition ($200 with a two-year commitment) that wasn’t there when we first played with the Vu? Or will we find ourselves in the Twilight Zone, reliving the same moment over and over again? Let’s find out.

Intuition by LG hands-on: a pen-enabled competitor to the Galaxy Note for Verizon (video)

Intuition by LG hands-on

It’s a silly name as smartphones go (and one that conjures images of lady-focused razors), but regardless, LG’s Intuition is now officially a member of Verizon’s lineup. The 4G LTE device, shown off today at the manufacturer’s launch event, is nigh unchanged from the South Korean model we reviewed this past July (known as the Optimus Vu). With a 5-inch 1,024 x 768 True-XGA IPS capacitive display, dual-core S3 CPU clocked at 1.5GHz, 8-megapixel rear camera, NFC, 2080mAh battery and that Rubberdium pen, the only thing separating this stateside iteration from its SK Telecom cousin is the skinned Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS onboard and $199 on contract price. So how does it fare in this Big Red debut? Follow along as we attempt to find what’s been lost, if anything, in translation.

LG Intuition with Verizon 4G LTE gets official: $200 on contract starting September 6th

LG Intuition with Verizon 4G LTE gets official $200 on contract starting September 6th

Just as rumors predicted, the LG Intuition for Verizon has been made official in time for a September 6th launch date. The phone, which is essentially the Optimus Vu with the carrier’s 4G LTE connectivity thrown in, will be available for $200 on contract on Verizon’s website starting tomorrow, and it will hit stores on September 10th. To jog your memory, the handset runs Android 4.0 on a 5-inch display, with a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor under the hood. The phone features the LG Tag+ app, which uses NFC to control phone settings, and two reprogrammable NFC stickers are included. Check out the press release for more info.

LG Intuition 4G LTE may become available on Verizon September 6th

LG Intuition may launch on Verizon September 6th

The day of September 6th is gearing up to be a rather hefty one for Verizon: earlier we reported that the Samsung Galaxy Stellar is slated to launch on that date, and it’s also the day after Motorola unveils its latest lineup for Big Red. Why not throw in another device that we’ve heard so much about, such as the LG Intuition? Indeed, docs detailing the CDMA-clad Optimus Vu is now beginning to make the rounds in Verizon’s internal system — and its intended launch date is among the trove of treasures to be found within. According to the docs, we should expect to see the 5-inch device available online in time for the 6th, while all channels won’t be ready to go until the 10th. We can’t imagine that too many people will be upset over having to wait another four days, however.

In terms of specs, here’s what we can anticipate from the Intuition: Ice Cream Sandwich, a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8660 (Snapdragon S3) processor paired with MDM9600 LTE modem and 1GB RAM, Gorilla Glass, a 5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1024 x 768, 15 hours of talk time, 8MP rear camera with 1.3MP front-facing cam and no microSD expandable storage option. Ultimately, the Intuition is Verizon’s variant of the Optimus Vu, and boasts that commonality right down to the components and design — you won’t find much difference in specs, weight or dimensions between the two. We’ve compiled a few images for your enjoyment, so head below to see. As before, we had to be creative in how we treated these images to protect the identity of everyone involved.

Leaked LG Intuition image gives away possible release date

Well this is interesting: the folks over at DroidDog have come across a new press shot for the LG Intuition, and this leaked image might just give us some insight on when the phone will launch. The hint appears to be hidden in the date displayed on the phone: September 15, 2012. While that may seem like nothing at first glance, DroidDog points out that companies frequently like to hide information like this in press shots, so that date displayed on the phone’s screen might just turn out to be the date that the LG Intuition is launching.

Recently, we’ve been hearing word that the LG Optimus Vu has been rebranded as the Intuition in time for its launch at Verizon, and this image seems to confirm it. The Intuition looks exactly the same as the Optimus Vu, with that same 5-inch screen putting out a 4:3 aspect ratio. You can see the front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera in the leaked press shot, and the phablet will come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich running and 32 GB of storage.

Of course, until LG makes an official announcement, we can’t be sure that September 15 is the date the Intuition is launching, so it may be best to remain on the skeptical side of things for the time being. However, LG has said previously that it hoped to launch the US version of the Optimus Vu before the end of its Q3, which wraps up at the end of September, so at least a September 15 release date for the freshly-rebranded Intuition doesn’t seem too absurd.

Sadly, we’ll have to wait for more details. September 15 is coming up pretty quickly though, so if that is indeed the launch date, don’t expect Verizon and LG to make us go much longer without pricing and release information. Keep it right here at SlashGear – we’ll have that information for you once LG and Verizon spill the beans.

LG Optimus Vu II adds universal remote to the phablet mashup

Infrared is making a comeback, and LG is hoping its new Optimus Vu II special edition – and a companion universal remote app – will earn it pride of place in the living room. Set to arrive in South Korea in September, the Optimus Vu II will control over 300 brands of TV, set-top boxes, A/V equipment and other technology, with the new QRemote app automatically recognizing when you’re at home.

When the Vu II figures out you’re connected to your home WiFi network, it automatically adds remote control shortcut buttons to its lockscreen. That way, even if your phone is locked, the rest of your family and your friends can use it to control your home entertainment system.

That addresses one of the main complaints about such multi-function gadgetry: making it convenient for several users often undermines security for one. Samsung has a number of tablets that offer universal remote features, for instance, but you’ll need to leave them unlocked – or tell everyone your PIN – if you want them to be able to access the control app itself.

LG hasn’t said much else about the Vu II, which implies the phone will be otherwise akin to its Vu sibling: big screen, somewhat odd 4:3 aspect ratio, and stylus support. No word on whether it will launch outside of Korea.

LG Intuition spied in press shots, leaves one piece of the puzzle left to go

LG Intuition spied in press shots, leaves just one piece of the puzzle left

The LG Intuition may be one of Verizon’s more poorly-kept secrets of recent memory. Apart from LG itself having confirmed that an Optimus Vu rebranding is due for the US within weeks, there’s been pricing and even an uncannily detailed FCC filing to fill in the gaps. Why not throw official press images into the mix? From the renders DroidDog has managed to obtain, the Intuition is a bit more than just a one-for-one port of the original Korean phablet. While Verizon’s influence is light outside of that attention-grabbing logo, there’s a switch-up in the navigation keys to reflect that Android 4.0 will be there from the beginning — a nice break from the ancient-feeling Android 2.3 layout of the original. About the only question left at this stage is that of the exact release date. There’s a September 15th mention in one of the images, but we all know how dates in press imagery can be misleading.
