Arcade Lights Bring the Arcade Experience Home (Minus the Games)

While many of us fans of classic arcade games would love to have a whole roomful of old arcade cabinets, we don’t always have the space, the money, or the understanding significant other to allow for such dalliances. ArcadeLights has the next best thing.

Instead of filling up tons of space with a complete arcade cabinet, ArcadeLights takes original game marquees and mounts them into wall sconces. They come in a wide variety of designs, and are the perfect addition to your gameroom. Whether you’re looking for Pac-Man, Asteroids, Moon Patrol, or TRON, they’ve got you covered.

Prices range from about $85 up to $225(USD) depending on the rarity and cost of the particular marquee. Head on over to their Etsy shop now to check their current stock. Keep in mind that due to the age of these marquees, they’re not all in perfect condition, but that just adds to the arcade-y charm, IMHO.

And if you miss playing the classics, you can always load up some games on your arcade emulator while you admire your shiny new wall light.

Stained Glass Octopus Chandelier: Eight Arms to Light You

As far as I’m concerned, your dining room can never have too many tentacles. So if you have an extra few grand, this stained glass octopus chandelier can be yours. It even has detachable limbs that can hold candles and glow.

Imagine that Octopus looking down on you are you eat all of your meals, just glowing as if almost ready to attack you and drag you into it’s lair. It was made by Mason Parker of Mason’s Creations. Parker says that each of the tentacles would be about 30 inches-long if they were stretched out, and the lamp itself measures four feet across as it is.

The body and the tentacles can light up separately or all at once. So how menacing it is, is up to you. If you want it, it will cost you $18,000(USD). When you think about it, that’s just $2,250 per tentacle.

Philips SlimStyle Flattens the Light Bulb

Throughout the years, a lot of things have evolved, including light bulbs. The latest of these is the SlimStyle by Philips, which is different from all the others because it’s a flat light bulb.

Flat Light Bulb 620x451magnify

It’s still shaped like the typical light bulb, only it’s not as three-dimensional as you’re used to anymore.

The SlimStyle is covered by rubber and has LED lights arranged in a horseshoe shape on the inside. This configuration disperses heat throughout the bulb more efficiently than conventional LED bulbs, eliminating the need for aluminum heat sinks. This makes the flat light bulbs cheaper in comparison to the non-flat ones, and they’ll be priced below $10 when they finally hit the market.

The SlimStyle will go on sale today, January 2nd at The Home Depot, with the first bulbs offering the equivalent of a 60-watt incandescent for only 10.5 watts.

These Water Balloons are for Lighting, Not for Fighting

Water balloon fights are fun and they are a mandatory part of childhood. Adults love to get in on the action too whenever we get the chance. So if you are looking for some fun lighting that has a bit of nostalgia and a playful attitude, check out these water balloon pendant lights.

These unique and playful lights are inspired by water balloons inflating under a faucet. They were designed by Torafu Architects and they were displayed at the IFFT interior design show in Tokyo last month.

They’re not light bulbs in the usual sense, though they do have the shape. Each of these glass bulbs is backlit by an LED which highlights the bubbles and curves in the glass. They look like they emit a nice soft glow.

Too bad you can’t pluck them from their leads and throw them at each other for a light/fight show.

Janus Dynamic Fabric Lights up or Warms You up, as Needed

Janus gives interactive fabric a whole new meaning. Not only is it strong and versatile, but it also comes with integrated heating or lighting capabilities. It sounds like something from the future, and it probably is, but here’s to hoping someone can actually turn it into a reality.

Janus Fabric 620x287magnify

Janus is a concept desibn for a textile that could be integrated into a variety of base materials, such as fabrics, leather, or film. After the material is decided, a lighting or heating system can be applied before using the textile to create the intended product.

So far, three products have been designed with the special features of Janus in mind: an umbrella with an integrated lighting system, bulb-less light that uses the material’s lighting properties to provide illumination, and a wheelchair with integrated heating in its seat.

The lighting or heating system is basically sandwiched in between a layer of polyurethane and polyester. For example, for the umbrella, the system is described as follows:

In the rain, the city seems to be darker and gloomier than usual. Janus Fabric senses the sounds on the street and expresses various light patterns in response.

Futuristic? Yes. Impossible? We’re hoping it isn’t.

Janus Fabric is a Red Dot Design Award 2013 winner and was designed by Kim Hyemin, Kim Minki, and Lee Jisu.

A Little Vitamin B Is All That Makes This Worm Glow Bright Green

This might look like the result of some wild nuclear accident, but in fact this worm is perfectly healthy. It just happens to glow bright green when exposed to certain wavelengths of light.

How would you change Vizio’s Thin + Light (14-inch, 2012)?

Vizio Thin Light review 14inch, mid2012 what happens when a TV maker enters the PC market

When Vizio announced that it was making laptops, people flooded our inbox demanding we review the Vizio Thin + Light (14-inch, 2012). After all, the company’s reputation for undercutting rivals with quality hardware meant that its debut entry had to be taken seriously. Out of the gate, it won points for us for its cracking build quality and amazing display, but lost marks for a bad trackpad, keyboard and short battery life. In the end, we couldn’t recommend this device, but we bet plenty of you went for it anyway. In which case, you’ll be expertly placed to tell us, after a few months of use on this thing, what would you change about it?

Star Wars Mood Lights Light up Your Dark Side

While Darth Vader and his Imperial stormtroopers are officially on the Dark Side of the Force, it doesn’t mean there’s not a little bit of light inside of them. At least that’s the way I’ve decided to interpret these awesome Star Wars inspired mood lights.

star wars mood lights 3 620x620magnify

Each one of these lamps is illuminated by bright LEDs inside – Darth Vader with red ones, and stormtroopers with white. Since they’re battery powered, they have no cord and can be set anywhere. Heck, you can even use them as a mood light the next time you go camping in the forests of Endor.

Choose from two models – a small light that measures about 5.3″ high or a large one that measures about 9.8″ high. Bigger is always better when it comes to Darth Vader. Just look at those Death Stars.

All four lamps are available from Firebox. The small ones go for about $24(USD) each, while the bigger ones are about $64. So use the Force to open up your wallet, and order one today.
