Hasta La Gadget!

For several years now, it seems Nicholas Cage has been in every movie possible, or at least has attempted to be somewhat included in nearly every film. Because of that, the internet has decided putting his face on pretty much anything and everything should be a thing, the results of which will probably terrify you and make you wish you could have the power to unsee things. This might be one of those times.

YouTube user Criken created a video called “The Legend of Cage: Beneath the Mask” and what it highlights is a texture mod that replaces characters and pretty much anything else’s face in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask with Nicholas Cage’s face. Behringer made a bit of a splash as CES last year with its oversized iPhone dock, this year it’s keeping things a little more front-room friendly. Launching its new OMNI system, the audio maker hopes to bring a little AirPlay magic to your house, without excluding some of your legacy hardware. The system consists of modular elements that let you add your passive speakers into the mix, as well as work together as a whole. More specifically, the OMNI SP3 and SP5i units are all-in-one 2.1 systems, and there’s a dedicated subwoofer too. But, if you don’t have or want their own breed, you can bring in your own. The OMNI Amp is a 2 x 40W stereo amplifier and AirPlay receiver that lets you play your music with your existing passive bookshelf or floor-mounted gear, and active speakers can be looped into the AirPlay party with the OMNI link box. The speakers are provisionally set to cost $249 (for the SP3i) and $349 (for the SP5i and sub), while the amp and link boxes will likely set you back $199 and $129 respectively. Activity bracelets and other fitness gadgets are a great way to get motivated to get into shape. Instead of relying on paltry humans, your love for gadgets will keep you running when the lactic acid starts to settle into your legs! Well, that might still be a pipe dream, but check out Lark’s latest release. It’s kind of like a minimal version of the Nike+ FuelBand.

The LarkLife will track your activity, from sleep patterns to food intake using a bracelet and a mobile app. For now, this will work only with iOS devices. It’s not waterproof, but splash-resistant, and has a pedometer inside to count your steps. It will be able to measure how long you sleep and how long it takes you to go to sleep. There’s a vibrating alarm built-into this band as well.

Just like other bracelets, you have to manually enter your food intake, which is a bit of a downer in my book, but the band uses Bluetooth Smart to automatically sync with your iPhone. It can also tell whether you’re running or walking, meaning that the app will log workouts even if you forget to enter them. The device will dish out advice during the day and reward “good behavior” with badges. It’s available for pre-order from Lark for $150(USD) and will be available before the holidays.

I love the idea of an intelligent home, one that has a lot of functions that can be programmed and controlled from far away, but the overall cost of such automation has generally been pretty high. Thanks to SmartThings, you might be able to do almost the same but at a fraction of the cost.

SmartThings is a new system that will let you link up your house to your iPhone or other devices via the Internet. It promises to let you control and receive notifications from a variety of different devices, such as remote outlets, open/shut, motion, and presence sensors. There are more on the way, such as door locks, thermostats, smoke alarms and flood sensors.

SmartThings was launched as a Kickstarter project, and with 25 days left of funding, it has already surpassed its $250,000 goal. Currently, it stands at $320,000. The basic kit gets you the hub and three sensors for $149(USD). For $500, you get 10 sensors and won’t have to pay any monthly fees to use it.

It’s a great way to double-check if you’ve locked your front door, switched off the AC, or turn off a light from anywhere in the world.
