LinkedIn acquires Pulse news reader for $90 million

LinkedIn acquires Pulse news reader for $90 million

LinkedIn has been pretty clearly repositioning itself as a source for news as of late, and it’s now made that shift even clearer with a fairly major acquisition. The company announced today that it has acquired Pulse, maker of news reader apps for mobile devices (in addition to a web-based offering) at a cost of some $90 million. In its own blog post announcing the news, Pulse says that its apps will remain as they are for now, although they will now offer a “LinkedIn Influencer” feed featuring the company’s hand-picked contributors. According to Pulse, its apps currently have over 30 million users around the globe, with approximately 40 percent of those outside the US; for its part, LinkedIn recently topped 200 million users.

LinkedIn begins rolling out Facebook-like mentions feature

LinkedIn is now rolling out a new feature very similar to a feature already offered by Facebook. When you begin typing out a person’s name or a company’s name in your status update, a drop-down menu will pop up that will allow you to “mention” the person or company you’re discussing. The other party will be notified about your mention in real-time, providing much more engaging conversations.

LinkedIn states that its starting to roll out the new feature to English-speaking users at first, however, it plans on rolling out the feature to its global members soon. You can also utilize the new “mentions” feature in the comments section on your LinkedIn pages as well. You will be able to hold much more organized conversations with individuals in a community, enabling convenient one-on-one conversations.

This new rollout works seamlessly with Twitter as well, despite the two companies severing ties with each other back in July of 2012. If your Twitter account is linked with your LinkedIn account, the mentions in your status updates will transfer over to Twitter seamlessly. The mentions, while appaering as a full name on your LinkedIn status update, will change itself to the mentioned person’s Twitter username.

LinkedIn provides professionals with an easy way to connect to other professionals in their fields, as well as search for new and better jobs. Speaking of jobs, LinkedIn also rolled out a revamp to its jobs page back in February that made it even easier for people to find jobs relevant to their interests and work experience. LinkedIn says that “there’s more to come”, but we should expect no less from a network whose members “are some of the most engaged professionals online.”

Mentions Added To LinkedIn For Striking Up Conversations

Mentions Added To LinkedIn For Striking Up Conversations

The mentions feature has been made popular by Twitter. It has become one of the most widely used ways for striking up conversations online. LinkedIn, a network focused towards professionals, brings mentions for its users in a bid to make it easier for them to start conversations. Dubbing it a new way for users to engage with their network, LinkedIn says that mentions make it easier for users to share knowledge with each other and ultimately become better at what they do. They now have the ability to mention their connections and companies in conversations on the network.

It is pretty straight forward to use mentions on LinkedIn. Simply type the name of a company or connection that you want to mention in your status or in a comment on the Homepage, select the relevant connection from the list that drops down and proceed to share. Those who have been mentioned in the update will receive a notification about the mention. It is also possible to mention other LinkedIn members that are in conversation in the comments section of posts on the LinkedIn Homepage. Users will be able to respond in real-time when someone begins a conversation with them. Today LinkedIn starts rolling out mentions for English speaking members, promising that it will be rolled out to users all across the globe soon.

Even LinkedIn Can Be Beautiful

I believe that what makes LinkedIn special is the actual content. I would like to propose a more “content driven” LinkedIn where users feel that it’s more engaging and relevant towards their own interests. Business sites do not need to be “stale”, and it could be a layout that is both professional and attractive. More »

Model Tracks Down Pervert Via His LinkedIn Profile

Model Tracks Down Pervert Via His LinkedIn ProfileWith phones these days packing cameras, just about any pervert will be able to take upskirt photos of unsuspecting females without them knowing. A 22-year old model, Brittanie Weaver, got a taste of that being done to her and she was none too pleased about it.

According to the New York Daily News, Weaver popped into a pet store with her dog when this guy followed her around and under the pretense of petting her dog, he sneakily snagged some photos of her by using his iPad. Weaver was suspicious at first but was unable to confirm it, and it was finally when she was at the counter that she caught him and the CCTV footage (screenshot above) proved it.

However when she approached the police, they told her that they were unlikely able to track down the pervert, but luckily for Weaver she caught a glimpse of his ID badge, and from there she tracked him down via LinkedIn and identified him with “150 per cent” certainty. The police are expected to move in and charge the man for his offense. The use of social media to help identify criminals is starting to become commonplace these days, and it just goes to show that we are never, truly anonymous.

SociaLink Makes Social Network Connections a Snap

If you’ve ever met someone at a party or meeting and wanted to exchange social networking information, you know it can be kind of a pain. Sure, you can hand them a business card – even one with a QR code on it – but that exchange of info still isn’t instantaneous, and requires the other party to follow up later. Now, there’s a new app which makes it easy for you to trade information – assuming you both have the app installed, of course.

socialink

SociaLink provides users with a fast way to share their Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram info, instantly adding both you and your new connection to each others networks. Simply start up the app, let it search for nearby phones or tablets, and then choose the networks you want to request access connect to. The other party then accepts, and you’re connected. You can also send social network info via email, but what fun would that be? Check out how SociaLink works in the video below:

You can download SociaLink over on the iTunes App Store for free. There’s not an Android version yet, but there should be one coming in the not-too-distant future.

Twitter, LinkedIn apps updated for BlackBerry 10, now function like the real deal

Twitter, LinkedIn apps updated for BlackBerry 10, now function like the real deal

Two new app updates are currently on deck for owners of BlackBerry’s Z10 aimed at enhancing the native Twitter and LinkedIn experience. And by “enhance,” we mean achieve parity with app iterations on rival mobile OS platforms. With the newly tweaked Twitter for BB10, users will have the option to add or take photos while creating a tweet, delete messages, send direct messages from the ‘Me’ tab, report users as spam and browse conversations in a threaded view. So basically, the new version of Twitter for BB 10 is now fully baked. LinkedIn is also getting a minor overhaul, now letting users view and search for “Recommended” jobs, filter news by industry, message contacts from their profile pages and view images in full-screen. The updates should hit the BlackBerry World store within 24 hours, so practice some patience. Your Z10 just got that much more useful.

Linkedin will be revamping their ‘Jobs’ page

Linkedin will be revamping its job search engine to help its users find the jobs or careers of their dreams a whole lot easier. Their redesigned job search engine adds a bunch of new features that make it easier to search for the jobs that people both want and qualify for. There will be a whole new look and feel for their job search engine as well as more tools to help you search for the specific jobs that match the qualities you’re interested in.

Linkedin is about to get a whole lot easier

The first major feature being added is what Linkedin calls the ‘first degree connection’. The Linkedin job search engine will show you companies where you know someone who can get you through the front doors. This is similar to the mutual friends system on Facebook, except these people will be your ticket to getting a new career.

Another feature being added is the ability to filter your job search by country, zip code, industry, and function. This advanced search feature will help you pinpoint careers that more specifically addresses your needs. You can also now view the latest job postings within your saved searches. There will be a new notification that will let you know when new job opportunities show up matching the criterias you listed before. There will be “Save Job” button that will let you keep track of your favorite job postings. And finally, there will be easier access to jobs that match your interest based on the information you place in your Linkedin profile.

For those with a subscription to Linkedin Job Seeker Premium, you will have a feature in the advanced search engine that will allow you to look up jobs that match the salary requirements you want. There will also be tips that appear during your job search to help you utilize Linkedin to its highest potential. All of these new features, as well as the redesign of the job search engine, will be rolled out to everyone within the next few weeks.

LinkedIn Rewards Employees With iPad minis

LinkedIn Rewards Employees With iPad minis

LinkedIn CEO Jeff Wiener announced today to give employees free iPad minis. Roughly 3500 iPad minis were passed on to employees. “We wanted to acknowledge the hard work and accomplishments of all of our employees in 2012. During today’s biweekly All Hands meeting, we surprised our employees with iPad Minis as a small gesture of the company’s gratitude for their contributions” a spokesman confirmed the gift after a communications manager from LinkedIn UK tweeted about it.

The move comes in with LinkedIn reporting greater profits for the last quarter. The minis given out are 32 gigabyte and cost $429. According to Business Insider the total cost comes around $1.5 million. That’s a nice way of sharing the profits with employees. The idea is good as employees are not only  happy, but the iPad’s can be used for greater productivity as well. LinkedIn CEO Jeff Wiener might have gotten the idea from Brad Garlinghouse, CEO of YouSendIt, who gave iPad Mini’s to all of his employees over the holidays.  At this point it doesn’t matter how he got the idea, we can surely say LinkedIn employees would be excited to say the least.
