While plenty of mobile old hands appear to be holding back for later events, it looks like there’s no stopping Huawei. We’re expecting to see the official launch of several new phones, more network news, and hopefully a few surprises. Everyone’s getting settled into their seats, and we’ll be keeping you up to date with all the news as it happens.

It’s hard to believe a whole year has passed since the last time Intel held a keynote at CES. Back then, we got a glimpse of an early Medfield phone and also saw a demo of Fruit Ninja running on a touchscreen Ultrabook. (Remember when that seemed like a novelty?) Twelve months later, we still haven’t seen that many Atom-powered handsets, but touch-enabled laptops are already the new normal. So what’s in store for 2013? Personally, we’re hoping for longer battery life on touchscreen Ultrabooks, and that might be a real possibility if Intel comes out with those low-power Y-series chips we’ve been reading about. We’d also be shocked if Intel didn’t give us an update on Medfield, or show us some splashy laptop demonstration. Who knows? Maybe this is the year NFC in notebooks finally catches on. Or maybe, if rumors are to be believed, we’ll hear more about a “virtual cable TV service.” (Ed. note: don’t hold your breath.) In any case, there’s only one way to find out: stay tuned as we give you up-to-the minute coverage.

Apple teased that it had “a little more to show” us prior to today’s San Francisco event, but it’s clear now that the phrasing was humble at best. Not only has the much-anticipated, rumored and leaked 7.9-inch iPad mini been officially revealed, but so has a smattering of new and refreshed offerings across its range of gizmos. The standard iPad is seeing its fastest refresh yet (about six months) to a Lighting port and A6X-packing fourth-generation model, and the iMac has ditched its optical drive to go Air-thin in its Ivy Bridge-driven seventh-generation. Mobile power users should be especially be pleased, too, as a 13-inch variant of the MacBook Pro with a 2,560 x 1,600 Retina Display is now a reality. Lest we forgot that the iBooks app and iBooks Author have both been updated — right on cue with that book-like iPad Mini. With an iPad mini, refreshes of several other devices in smaller forms, and an updated software build quite likely in the wings, our [live update feed] (otherwise known as a liveblog) will be running rampant with colors galore. You can tune in on the Apple event starting at 10AM PST on October 23rd (thats Tuesday), and we’ll have already started updates earlier in the morning right here in the SlashGear main news feed. This event promises to be a doozy with “We’ve got a little more to show you” as Apple’s chosen tagline – miniature everything!
The Apple announcement for this event has many guessing that additional rainbow colors are coming to the Apple universe, but past examples of invites have shown colors regardless of the casing of the product. Also the iPod family has already brightened up once again at the iPhone 5 event, and the devices we’ll be seeing this week will much more likely be coming in any color you like – just so long as they’re black or white. Of course the aluminum family is set to get a bit denser too.
There’s likely going to be an announcement of availability for the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, an iMac with a teardrop-shaped body, and an improved Mac mini. These will each be working together – and with the new iPad mini – in a collection of ways that Apple will surely outline in many magical ways. The iPad mini is, of course, going to be the star of the show no matter what, so it’s going to be all things miniature in a bit of a dance around the tablet release.
The timeline below this post will bring you some more insight on everything this event may very well contain, from hardware to software updates. This event has most recently been tipped to be bringing an education angle in on the iPad mini, with low costs and iBook updates for the students of the planet – we’ll have to see if this tip, like the rest, pan out soon!
