Apple’s iPhone 5c isn’t the low-cost phone you’ve been waiting for

Apple's iPhone 5c isn't for emerging markets so who is it for

The iPhone 5s was expected. The iPhone 5c, on the other hand, was merely rumored. Now that Apple has taken the wraps off of two new iPhone products, it’s the newest range that strikes us as the most curious. For months, pundits have wondered if and when Apple would attack two obvious markets: the large-screen market — which Samsung is lapping up in supreme fashion at the moment — and developing markets. The iPhone 5c addresses neither of those, which begs the question: who exactly is Apple targeting?

iPhone 5C Video Shows Off Purported Shell In Five Colors

There have already been a lot of rumors about the iPhone 5C, Apple’s much rumored low cost iPhone. The company is expected to unveil this device next month though Apple is yet to confirm its iPhone plans. Previous rumors suggest that iPhone 5C will be offered in multiple colors, five is believed to be the magic number. A new video has been posted on YouTube which shows off all five colors in which the smartphone is expected to be released. The shells or casings seen in this video are identical to the ones that have already been seen time and time again.

White, blue, green, yellow and red are the five colors which are expected to adorn Apple’s newest smartphone. Recently a similar casing was pictured in black, leading many to believe that iPhone 5C will be available in a total of six colors. Various analysts are of the view that the black casing was a fake, and that the smartphone will only be available in these five colors. Nothing has been confirmed as of now, not the colors and not even the moniker. Even if Apple does unveil the low cost iPhone next month, there’s a possibility that it might not call it the iPhone 5C.

iPhone 5C Allegedly Pictured During Testing

iPhone 5C Allegedly Pictured During Testing

Over the past couple of months we’ve heard a lot of rumors about the possibility that Apple might release two new iPhones at the same time, something that it has never done before. These two new smartphones are widely known as the iPhone 5S, the upgrade to iPhone 5, and the iPhone 5C, which is the much rumored low cost iPhone that the company has supposedly been working on for quite some time. We’ve already seen casings, parts and components of both devices leak. Now a new image has surfaced which allegedly shows off a score of iPhone 5C units being tested near the assembly line.

The picture was initially posted on Sina Weibo, which is China’s version of Twitter. Weibo is actually the initial source for quite a lot of rumors that originate from China or the Far East in general. These iPhone 5C units are apparently being tested for general operation and capacity, though there’s obviously no way to confirm that. For all we know these could be knock-offs based on all of the rumors about Apple’s low cost iPhone that have been circulating over the last few months. The company is expected to make an announcement on September 10th, though it is yet to confirm that. [Image via NoWhereElse]

Apple iPhone 5S Launch Will Be Most Successful Ever, Analyst Claims

Apple iPhone 5S Launch Will Be Most Successful Ever, Analyst Claims

We hear this phrase every year when Apple launches a new iPhone, every launch seems to break all previous records, essentially becoming the most successful launch ever for the company. The phrase has been thrown around this year even before Apple has unveiled its next generation iPhone. Analyst Trip Chowdhry, MD Equity Research at Global Equities Research, claims that the iPhone 5S launch will set a new record for Apple. It is worth noting that Apple’s share price has been steadily increasing over the past few weeks as anticipation builds for the new smartphones, expected to be announced next month. It appears that Wall Street has faith in Apple’s upcoming smartphones.

He also weighs in on the much rumored low cost iPhone. Chowdhry’s research reveals that customers in markets such as India, Malaysia and Thailand opt for cheaper Android smartphones as opposed to the expensive iPhones. He believes that by releasing a low cost iPhone Apple would be able to rope in a sizable number of these customers and establish a footing for itself in the mid-range smartphone market. Both new iPhones are expected to be unveiled on September 10th, it is believed that the smartphones will be released in the market towards the end of the month.

Apple’s Low Cost iPhone Might Not Come With Siri

Apples Low Cost iPhone Might Not Come With Siri

Apple is rumored to release two new iPhones next month, apart from the next generation iPhone, the company is also expected to unveil its first ever budget or low cost iPhone. Many monikers are being thrown around, this device is widely known as the iPhone 5C or the iPhone Lite. The moniker doesn’t matter that much, what most people are intrigued about are the specifications. It appears that there is a possibility of Apple’s low cost iPhone not having all of the features one can find in a full fledged iPhone, analyst Gene Munster at Piper Jaffray believes that Siri won’t be present on the budget iPhone.

Munster also says that Apple is likely to price this smartphone around $300. He mentions the possibility that instead of offering iPhone 4S free on contract, Apple would replace it with the budget iPhone, which will be sold for a fixed price and won’t require customers to take up a two year contract with a carrier. No concrete reason has been provided as to why Apple would willingly not provide Siri in the budget iPhone, not to mention the fact that the fifth generation iPod touch already offers it. Could this be a move to safeguard consumer interest for the full fledged iPhone, those who want Siri have to dish out a few hundred dollars more? It can’t be said for sure. Hopefully the official details will be unveiled soon, as per recent rumors, Apple might make an iPhone related announcement on September 10th.

iPhone Lite Initial Production Underway At Pegatron, Labor Report Indicates

iPhone Lite Initial Production Underway At Pegatron, Labor Report Indicates

Earlier today we reported that one of Apple’s suppliers based in China, Pegatron, has been accused of worker abuse. The allegations were leveled by China Labor Watch, a New York based non-profit. Its report indicates that the initial production of iPhone Lite, also known as the low cost iPhone, has already begun at Pegatron. The report has a section titled “A day in Pegatron,” in which a worker describers their activities at the Pegatron factory.

The worker’s account is of July 9th, when they had to “paste protective film on the iPhone’s plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines.” If you’ve been following the barrage of rumors about the iPhone Lite, you’ll know that it is expected to have a plastic back cover. The worker has also been cited as saying that mass production of this device hasn’t begun yet, but they believe that it will be released in the market soon. The report says that apart from building iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, Pegatron is also tasked with building “low-priced plastic iPhones” for Apple. Everything that’s mentioned in this particular section of this report lines up with all of the rumors we have been hearing about iPhone Lite. Apple is expected to announce it this September.

Plastic Casing For Apple’s Low-Cost iPhone Gets Confirmed In A Supplier Responsibility Investigation

    plastic-iphone

Apple’s plans to release a low-cost iPhone got a solid confirmation from a new report by China Labor Watch this morning. The unlikely source of the new product info was an undercover investigation into Pegatron to shed light on working conditions at the Apple supplier (which also acts as a partner to other consumer electronics makers).

A description plucked from a diary entry by an undercover investigator posing as a worker reveals the salient details around the low-cost iPhone and its plastic back, as first reported by Computerworld. Here’s the relevant segment in full:

Today’s work is to paste protective film on the iPhone’s plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple […] The new cell phone has not yet been put into mass production, so quantity is not as important.

The key details here are first that the leaks we’ve seen showing a plastic casing for an iPhone are likely true, and that the “coming soon” release window is also accurate, though there’s no telling whether this is gearing up for a fall launch. The phone is also notably not yet in the mass-production phase, though there’s still time for that to take place between the time the information was recorded in the report and a late fall release date, as appears to be most likely for Apple’s upcoming iPhone refresh.

The report isn’t meant to tease iPhone production details, of course; it’s actually supposed to depict working conditions at the factory, and suggests that Apple isn’t keeping up with the promises it makes in its Supplier Responsibility materials on its site and in its regular reports on the subject. The report says that Chinese workers are doing six-day weeks, with 11 hour shifts and making only around $1.50 an hour for a total of $268 per month, which is far under the local monthly average of $764 and not enough to qualify as a living wage for Shanghai, China Labor Watch says.

China Labor Watch and other groups consistently try to draw attention to working conditions in the country, often using Apple as a particularly high-profile example. Ironically, this report may be its biggest attention draw yet, since it features solid information about an unreleased product that many investors and consumers are watching in the West with bated breath.

iPhone Lite Allegedly Pictured With FCC Approval

iPhone Lite Allegedly Pictured With FCC Approval

Its all very confusing, to be honest. There have been rumors that Apple will release a low cost iPhone this year, we just don’t know what it will ultimately end up being called. Many monikers have been speculated, such as the iPhone Mini and even the iPhone 5C. There’s one faction that believes it will be called iPhone Lite. So for now, we’ll go with iPhone Lite. A picture has surfaced online which shows off the device’s back that contains all the relevant certification markings, including that of the FCC.

The FCC needs to approve a device before it can be sold, that’s why we often get to see rumored devices pop up in FCC filings. That gives us an idea of what to expect. No such filing for a cheap or low cost iPhone has appeared as yet, those this picture makes it seem like the FCC has already approved Apple’s budget iPhone. The shell of the device itself is identical to the ones that have previously leaked, and its in line with all of the rumors that we’ve heard. Nevertheless, there still exists the possibility that what we see here is actually not what Apple is going to be unveiling. Apple is rumored to announce both the iPhone Lite and iPhone 5S at an event on September 6th. [Image via Electronista]

‘iPhone 5C’ Packaging Pictured In China

iPhone 5C Packaging Pictured In China

We’ve been hearing a lot of rumors about a low cost iPhone that is just on the horizon. Apple is rumored to be releasing a budget smartphone offering alongside its next generation iPhone, the iPhone 5S. Up till now, the monikers rumored for this device include the iPhone Lite and iPhone Mini. Today we see a bin full of packaging boxes for an ‘iPhone 5C.’ This could be the packaging for a barrage of counterfeit iPhones, or this could be the moniker of Apple’s much rumored cheaper iPhone.

The packaging itself looks quite similar to that of the fifth generation iPod touch. The C in this moniker could correspond to the polycarbonate material that has reportedly been used for this device. The picture appeared on WeiPhone Forums, it originates from China. The country is well known for knock off products, so there exists a huge possibility that iPhone 5C is just a knock off that has been created based on the rumors of Apple’s low cost iPhone. Recent rumors suggest that Apple might conduct an event on September 6th to unveil both the iPhone 5S and the low cost iPhone.
