Samsung SPH-L500 saunters by the FCC with Sprint-friendly LTE, hefty dimensions

Samsung SPH-L500 saunters by the FCC with Sprint-friendly LTE, hefty dimensions

Uncle Sam just played host to Samsung’s SPH-L500 smartphone at the FCC, and it looks like the handset’s next stop will be Sprint. With a 850 / 1900 CDMA radio and support for Band 25 LTE / SVLTE (simultaneous voice and data), the South Korean-designed smartphone carries the requisite kit to operate on the Now Network, and also packs WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth and NFC. Though other details are scant, digging into the government paperwork reveals one major clue: size. Measuring up at roughly 5.2 inches tall and 2.6 inches wide, it’s clear that we’re in store for a hefty device, as it’s ever so slightly smaller than the Galaxy S 4. Big Yellow and Samsung haven’t made the hardware official just yet, but that’s likely to change soon as it’s cleared one of the final hurdles left between it and US availability.

T-Mobile rolling out iPhone 5 software update, addresses battery and enables LTE

The official T-Mobile iPhone 5 doesn’t release until April 12, but those with unlocked models can take advantage of T-Mobile’s network right away. For those customers, T-Mobile is rolling out a software update that enables LTE on unlocked iPhone 5 models, as well as improves battery life and enables Visual Voicemail.

T-Mobile-iPhone-5-wont-support-WiFi-calling-580x3881

As expected, T-Mobile updated their support forums to address the software update, and it lists a roll-out date of April 5, so unlocked GSM iPhone 5 users should be receiving the OTA update at some point today. On top of the previously-mentioned updates, other features like improved Personal Hotspot settings, improved MMS settings, and HD Voice are also included.

It seems that T-Mobile is anticipating a lot of iPhone 5 users to switch over to the carrier after announcing new plans that start at only $50 per month. This gives customers unlimited minutes and text messages, as well as 500MB of data, which is usually enough for just the everyday user, while 2GB more will cost only $10 per month.

Of course, LTE is a hot topic, but T-Mobile users will only have it a select number of areas around the country. However, T-Mobile plans to cover 200 million people with LTE by the end of the year. And while the T-Mobile iPhone 5 will support HD Voice, it won’t support WiFi calling, something that could be a major blow for some users.

Verizon 4G LTE Router Announced

Verizon 4G LTE Router AnnouncedFor those living in the US, most folks would know that there are four major mobile carriers, and Verizon is one of them, with the mobile carrier company having introduced a fair number of 4G LTE hotspots. Well, to make sure that customers have another way to hook up to their LTE network, Verizon has decided to unveil the Verizon 4G LTE Router. Basically, the Verizon 4G LTE Router allows you to connect other kinds of compatible hardware up to Verizon’s LTE service, and this can be done via wired and wireless connections. It seems that Netgear would be the hardware manufacturer of choice, where the Verizon 4G LTE Router is capable of supporting a grand total of 20 Wi-Fi-enabled devices simultaneously. Oh yeah, wired connections, too, are more than welcome, when it comes with a quartet of Ethernet ports.

Verizon claims that their new 4G LTE Router can be purchased from today onwards, where it will sport a $99.99 price tag, and it is accompanied by a two-year contract – after a $50 mail-in rebate of course, and if you decide to pick it up without any commitment would have to fork out $269.99. In addition, you can opt to throw in a Share Everything plan for another $20 monthly. [Press Release]

Verizon 4G LTE Router available now for $99

If you’re wanting to take advantage of Verizon‘s 4G LTE in your home, and are wanting a device that both wired and wireless devices can connect to, Verizon just released a new router that does the trick. Simply named the 4G LTE Router, this bad boy can take on ethernet connections and WiFi connections at the same time. It can support up to a whopping 20 WiFi connections, and has four ethernet ports on the back.

The router is made by Netgear, and it looks to be a rather small and thin router, with two antennae that tower above the device. Verizon says that the router is available for purchase right now, and it’ll cost you $99 after signing a two-year contract and sending in a $50 mail-in rebate. Or you can buy the router outright for $269.

If you’re already on one of Verizon’s Share Everything plans, you can easily add the router to your plan for only $20 per month. Of course, you might want to bump up the amount of geebees that you have, since connecting multiple device to the router is sure to take a hit on your data allotment, especially considering how fast Big Red’s LTE can be.

However, it’s rather odd to see Verizon promoting a router, but we suppose that the company’s mobile hotspot device may not have enough oompf for some users. Considering that the router can support up to 24 devices total at once, we have to say that it’s one device that you don’t see everyday, and it could be great for larger parties or work events where people need to stay connected.

AT&T expands LTE to 14 new markets

It’s no doubt that AT&T is trying to catch up to Verizon when it comes to their LTE network, but AT&T is slowly gaining ground. The carrier announced today that they’ve added LTE in 14 new markets in various areas across the US, including Mount Vernon, Washington and Fresno, California. Customers in these areas will now be able to get faster speeds while browsing on the go.

AT&T

The 12 other markets that AT&T announced today are Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers, Arkansas; Fort Smith, Arkansas; Palm Coast, Florida; Lakeland-Winter Haven Florida; Fort Pierce, Florida; Mount Dora, Florida; Carbondale-Marion Illinois; Houma/Thibodaux, Louisana; Jefferson City, Missouri; Las Cruces, New Mexico; Binghamton, New York; and Temple/Killeen Texas.

While Verizon has the edge when it comes to the largest LTE network in the US, AT&T claims its LTE network is the fastest out of the two, claiming that users on the carrier’s LTE can reach speeds that are up to 10 times faster than 3G. Of course, that all depends where you’re at and how good your signal is.

AT&T now claims to be covering 288 million people with its 4G LTE network, and they plan to reach 300 million by the time 2014 rolls around. Back in December, Verizon boasted 250 million people were covered by their LTE network. We don’t know what the exact number is now, but we do know that over 470 markets in the US have Big Red’s LTE.

T-Mobile tipped to rollout carrier update bringing LTE to unlocked iPhone 5 users

Something interesting appears to be afoot for unlocked iPhone users on the T-Mobile network. T-Mobile announced not long ago that it would be officially offering the iPhone 5. T-Mobile also happens to have a large number of unlocked iPhones operating on its network already.

Screen-Shot-2013-03-26-at-5.35.03-PM

That fact taken into account with the fact that T-Mobile has seven live LTE markets makes a new rumor going around pretty easy to swallow. According to a couple of screenshots that have turned up online, T-Mobile is set to rollout a carrier update that will enable LTE connectivity on the unlocked iPhone 5 devices on its network. Apparently, in service areas where T-Mobile has LTE networks the only thing needed to enable access by the iPhone 5 is a carrier .ipcc update.

Screen-Shot-2013-04-02-at-10.45.48-AM

The screenshot appears to be taken from T-Mobile’s internal computer system shows that the update will be coming on April 5. April 5 is this Friday for those not close to a calendar and the image claims that the update will be rolled out OTA to all iPhone 5 devices on the T-Mobile network. IPhone users will want to be sure that they have updated their operating system.

The carrier update will reportedly only be rolled out to iPhones running iOS 6.1.x or higher. T-Mobile plans to launch its own iPhone 5 on April 12. In addition to enabling LTE, the update will also bring visual voicemail, MMS settings, and network/device optimizations that T-Mobile customers using the iPhone 5 don’t have right now.

Casio G’z0ne Commando reboots with 4G LTE

The Casio G’z0ne Commando has been a rather quiet option on Verizon’s network, but for those wanting a rugged and tough smartphone on Big Red’s network, the Commando is a very safe bet. It’s even a better option now because a new version of the phone was seen making its way through the FCC, equipped with Verizon’s blazingly-fast 4G LTE.

Screen-Shot-2013-04-02-at-10.59.59-AM-540x422

Formally called the Casio G’z0ne Commando 811, the new handset comes with an all-new look on top of the brand new LTE chip. Of course, it’s not the most beautiful phone to look at, but if it’s protection from rain, dust, drops, etc. that you’re looking for. the Commando 811 may be the phone for you.

It’s very similar to our recently-reviewed Kyocera Torque, only this newer version is getting a bigger screen, a front-facing camera, and possibly an upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean based on the new navigation-key arrangement at the bottom of the device. And of course, it’s got the black and red color scheme that Verizon is notorious for on its Android handsets.

Nothing is official yet, but we should be hearing from Verizon and Casio with an official announcement sometime soon. It just cleared from the FCC, so it should only be a matter of time before those that need a viable option for a rugged smartphone equipped with LTE will be able to grab the Commando 811 from Big Red.

iPhone 5 carrier update may bring T-Mobile LTE to unlocked GSM models

iPhone 5 carrier update may bring T-Mobile LTE to unlocked GSM models

Word on the street is that an update will be hitting the iPhone 5 on April 5th that will turn on access to T-Mobile’s LTE network on unlocked GSM models. While you’ll have to wait until April 12th to pick up the iOS handset direct from the magenta-hued carrier, those who have been running rogue with unlocked devices from AT&T or purchased direct from Apple should soon be able to run at full, blistering 4G speeds. (Where the fledgling network has been fired up, at least.) The internal notice obtained by TmoNews (which you can see after the break) reads:

“The T-Mobile Carrier Update is a minor iOS software update that enables official iPhone support by T-Mobile. When installed, the software update enables a handful of capabilities like Visual Voicemail, MMS Settings and Network/Device optimizations that customers do not have access to today. On April 5, the software update will begin being pushed via OTA to all iPhone devices on the T-Mobile network with iOS 6.1.x or higher.”

So it’s not just LTE, but also some of the basic features that make the iPhone such a compelling product, which will suddenly turn on for T-Mo customers. We’ll know soon enough if there’s truth to these rumblings, but we’d imagine the iOS update would need to be pushed out ahead of the official T-Mobile iPhone launch.

EE launches free 4G WiFi service in (some) London black cabs

EE announces free 4G WiFi in London's black cabs

So, previous taxi WiFi solutions were too slow, or you weren’t underground. What’s a smartphone-tethered Londoner on the hunt for WiFi supposed to do? The current answer is to flag down one of London’s 40 4GEE taxis, all of which will be loaded with WiFi router connected to EE, the UK’s only LTE network. If you’re not dahhn sahhf, you’ll still be able to pick up the signal in ten cabs that’ll be circling Birmingham. Ironically, these 4G-ready black cabs will no longer be black. Nope, they’ll be coated in the turquoise hues of the EE network, which should make them easier to spot. Anyone living in either metropolis should have no troubles keeping up with new Doctor Who, Downton Abbey or Peep Show ever again. At least for the next three months, which is how long the service is set to last.
