Qualcomm outs global LTE chip, claims a world first

Global flavors of LTE bands can be a hassle for travelers and firms making multiple versions of the same device, but Qualcomm says its solved that quandary with a new radio chipset. Dubbed the RF360, the silicon is hailed as the world’s first mobile chip that packs support for global LTE, which translates to connectivity for LTE-FDD, LTE-TDD, WCDMA, EV-DO, CDMA 1x, TD-SCDMA and GSM / EDGE — breaking down the barriers separating roughly 40 different LTE bands. Not only does it lend globetrotters a hand, but Qualcomm claims the component carries a few other “world’s first” features that allow manufacturers to build thinner products with improved antenna performance, battery life and connection reliability. The outfit also unveiled the WTR1625L chip, which stakes claim to an industry first by sporting carrier aggregation alongside international LTE compatibility. Hardware made with the RF360 isn’t expected to arrive on shelves until the latter half of 2013, but for now you can mosey past the break for the nitty gritty details and a video to walk you through them.

Only this morning we were being teased with the idea of a touchscreen Chromebook. Well, good news for people who hate waiting — it’s here, it’s called the Pixel, and you can pre-order today. The all-Google laptop is aimed at those who live in the cloud, but want a little more from their machine. Built from the ground up for the web, the 12.85-inch 3:2 ratio display claims to offer 18 percent more vertical space than 16:9 does. The screen the Pixel has is — as you can imagine — one of its proudest features, sporting a 2,560 x 1,700 resolution, giving a PPI of 239, and offers a brightness of 400nit. Oh, and of course, it’s touch-enabled so whatever your input preference, you’re covered. On the inside, there’s a dual-core 1.8Ghz Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and two SSD options — 32Gb or 64GB. If that’s not enough, Google’s ahead of you, and is throwing in 1TB of Drive storage with every Pixel for three years — what it expects the life of the machine to be. You won’t be basing your choice just on storage though, as the smaller capacity model is WiFi only, while the 64GB comes with Verizon LTE baked right in, and a choice of plans.

As for the rest of the features, the Pixel also has a triple-microphone configuration — with one under the keyboard — which helps improve noise cancellation, including the rattle of your typing during excited hangouts. This is also where the speakers are hidden, so it will be interesting to see how those play nice together. Other features include an “HD” camera, a custom keyboard action for less finger-fatigue, and an enhanced smooth glass trackpad. As for ins and outs, there are two USB ports, a mini displayport, a mic / headphone jack and an SD card reader — notably, no Ethernet. Wirelessly, you have WiFi a thru n and Bluetooth (plus that LTE if you opt in). Wondering what effect that display might have on the (59Wh) battery? Well Google claims its open-source test (available for criticism online) has rated the Pixel at five hours. If you want to get yourself some touchscreen Pixel action, you can order starting today from the Play store, or Best Buy starting tomorrow. Update: The WiFi model is available now from the Google Play store and will be on Bestbuy.com starting tomorrow. You’ll have to wait until April before you can order the LTE version.

Qualcomm RF360 For Unified 4G LTE Smartphone Designs

Qualcomm has announced RF360, a solution that solves one of the biggest hurdles for LTE handset makers and customers: the need to build multiple versions of the same handset to address one of the many (40+) LTE bands worldwide. Interestingly, Qualcomm did a good job of keeping this a secret, since the company hinted before that a solution to it may take a long time to appear. For instance, the iPhone 5 comes in 3 versions (Model A1428, A1429 GSM, A1429 CDMA) and the Galaxy S3 has multiple versions as well (including a Qualcomm-powered one). For the traveler, this meant that LTE will not be available outside of their home market, because each carrier uses different frequencies, and even within a local market (US: Sprint, Verizon, AT&T),  LTE roaming may not be available. You may care even if you do not travel because the different hardware flavors delay smartphones availability in smaller markets or for smaller carriers. It also fragments the smartphone support (different hardware) and finally, it makes building those phones more expensive to build, design and update. ZTE to ship some of the first Tegra 4 phones by mid2013

When NVIDIA unveiled the Tegra 4 last month, there were questions as to when it would ship in a phone, or whether it was bound for phones in the first place. ZTE has settled that question with plans to be the first company shipping Tegra 4-packing smartphones. The Chinese phone builder won’t spoil the surprise by naming the devices in question, but the first models reach China by mid-2013. An LTE “super phone” is in the pipeline, ZTE says. With that fresh ground broken, we’re mostly left wondering how likely it is that these devices will cross the Pacific — as well as guessing which other companies are lined up for NVIDIA’s fourth-generation silicon.

UK 4G spectrum auction closes: All carriers winners but bid totals disappoint

The results of the UK 4G spectrum auction are in, with Vodafone the biggest individual bidder but spectrum acquired by most participants, despite the process falling short of predictions around how many billions would be made. In total, Ofcom raked in £2.34bn ($3.6bn) in bids from Vodafone, Telefonica (O2), Hutchison (Three), Everything Everywhere, and the BT Group subsidiary Niche Spectrum Ventures, less than the original estimates of £3.5bn ($5.4bn).

Vodafone splashed more than $790m on spectrum, including two paired 800MHz chunks, and three 2.6GHz chunks. Everything Everywhere (EE) came in second, spending almost $589m on four chunks (two in 800MHz, two in 2.6GHz), closely followed by O2, which spent $550m for two 800MHz chunks.

That left Three with a £225m spend on two 800MHz chunks, and finally Niche Spectrum Ventures, with £186m on three chunks in the 2.6GHz spectrum. MLL Telecom and HKT (UK) Company failed to acquire any spectrum.

Next up comes the “assignment stage,” where the companies bid on where exactly within the bands they’ve bought their new spectrum will be. In all, 250MHz of spectrum was awarded, which Ofcom points out is roughly equivalent to two-thirds of what radio frequencies are currently in use by operators. That process will begin imminently, Ofcom says.

It shouldn’t take long, either, since estimates for the first rival LTE services to take on EE’s network in the UK are by spring or early summer 2013. There won’t be full roll-outs until 2017, however, so expect patchy 4G concentrating on the larger cities, at least for the foreseeable future.

LG launches LTE-equipped Tab-Book Ultra and IdeaPad U460 in Korea

We weren’t convinced LG’s Z160 convertible was skinny enough for Ultrabook status when we went hands-on at CES, but the Korean company has run with the title and launched the Tab-Book Ultra in its homeland. The 11.6-inch slider runs full-fat Windows 8 on an Intel Core i5 CPU in the top-end configuration (GH5WK), and much to the joy of data-hungry users, packs an LTE radio in addition to standard WiFi. Those who want a more traditional laptop experience but also need 4G for the road can now purchase an LTE refresh of the IdeaPad U460, which has been launched in tandem. LG will be showing off the LTE-equipped Tab-Book Ultra at MWC later this month, although its ‘new series’ of smartphones is sure to steal all the attention. We’re still in the dark about when the Z160 will be available elsewhere, but Korean e-tailers are listing it at circa 1,400,000 won (around $1,300), so we can probably expect a similar price when it starts touring.

NTT DoCoMo’s Xi gets 10 million subscribers on the LTE bandwagon

Lately, NTT DoCoMo hasn’t had to push its customers to LTE so much as give them a gentle nudge. Just half a year after it notched up 4 million customers on its Xi service, the Japanese carrier has already reached 10 million — no mean feat when it took the carrier a year following the 2010 launch to get its first million. Of course, it’s not too difficult to explain just why adoption has been accelerating. Along with expanding coverage and improved speeds, DoCoMo has been releasing LTE phones aplenty to virtually guarantee that customers will move to 4G. Still, we don’t see any sign that the trend will stop when the carrier is launching a slew of high-end devices to catch 3G stragglers.

HTC One: All the carriers (but where’s Verizon?)

HTC’s new One flagship will launch on AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, EE, Vodafone, and O2 from mid-March, as part of a huge 185+ carrier roll-out, though Verizon is conspicuous by its absence from the list. The carrier launch partner roster – which covers more than 80 regions and countries – is already being described by HTC as its best-ever network engagement for a new phone, but Big Red being a hold-out in the US remains a mystery.

Of course, even if Verizon isn’t taking the One, that doesn’t rule out a variant of the phone for its network. The carrier has stuck to its DROID branding, for instance – including the well-esteemed DROID DNA by HTC – and it’s possible that is holding out for a specially named version that would fit with that.

However, the news is good if you’re on other carriers around the world. In North America, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Cincinnati Bell, and Best Buy will all be offering the One in the US, while Rogers, Bell, TELUS and Virgin Mobile Canada will offer it in Canada.

In Latin America, there’ll be support for the various América Movil regional networks, Movistar Venezuela, and Entel Chile, among others. China will also be getting the HTC One, with China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom all in line for the phone.

As for Europe, in the UK there’ll be availability across O2, EE, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Three, Carphone Warehouse, and Phones4U. EE has already confirmed that it will be offering the One for £69.99 ($108) on a £41 per month, 24 month package (1GB mobile data; unlimited UK calls and texts). Onto mainland Europe, and there’ll be support from Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange in various countries, and then further afield into Russia, the Middle East, and Africa.

We’ll update as we get more pricing information from other operators.

UPDATE: Straight from the carrier itself: “Vodafone will be offering the HTC One for sale from 15th March 2013, with pre-order opening two weeks before.”

UPDATE: Clove.co.uk lets us know: “The price is £425+VAT and the device is available in Silver or Black colours with 32GB of internal memory.” Shipping is “expected” to begin on the 15th of March – looks like a lock!

Did NVIDIA say it would stick to one new mobile processor design per year? If so, it’s not worried about its own rules: meet the Tegra 4i. The 4-plus-1 chip formerly known as Project Grey is a Tegra 4 mostly in name, and goes for integration rather than raw power. It sheds the newer Cortex-A15 architecture of the Tegra 4 for a spruced-up 2.3GHz Cortex-A9 with the i500 LTE modem built directly into the chip die — a move that cuts the surface area in half and simplifies the hardware, even as it supposedly outruns equivalent competition. The design is more than just an overclocked Tegra 3 with 4G inside, though. The 4i touts 60 graphics cores versus the 12 of its ancestor, and inherits the high dynamic range photography and video engine of the Tegra 4. NVIDIA is demonstrating the 4i’s chops through the Phoenix (pictured above), a 5-inch, 1080p reference Android smartphone that builders can use as a starting point. There’s no immediate customers mentioned for the CPU, although we suspect those are coming soon.

Speaking of that camera technology, NVIDIA has also given it a name. Chimera, as it’s now called, isn’t just about making HDR available for every photo and video. The mix of CPU and GPU processing can capture HDR panorama shots without requiring a single-direction sweep, letting a would-be Ansel Adams ‘paint’ the panorama out of order. The autofocusing engine is also smart enough to include subject tracking with an exposure lock. Both 8-megapixel Aptina and 13-megapixel Sony camera sensors can already support Chimera, which gives us a clue as to just what imaging we can expect with the first batch of Tegra 4 and 4i devices.

Tegra 4i Delivers Highest Performance of Any Single-Chip Smartphone Processor

SANTA CLARA, Calif.-February 19, 2013- NVIDIA today introduced its first fully integrated 4G LTE mobile processor, the NVIDIA(R) Tegra(R) 4i, which is significantly faster yet half the size of its nearest competitor.

Previously codenamed “Project Grey,” the Tegra 4i processor features 60 custom NVIDIA GPU cores; a quad-core CPU based on ARM’s newest and most efficient core- the R4 Cortex-A9 CPU- plus a fifth battery saver core; and a version of the NVIDIA i500 LTE modem optimized for integration. The result: an extremely power efficient, compact, high performance mobile processor that enables smartphone performance and capability previously available only in expensive super phones.

“NVIDIA is delivering for the first time a single, integrated processor that powers all the major functions of a smartphone,” said Phil Carmack, senior vice president of the Mobile business at NVIDIA. “Tegra 4i phones will provide amazing computing power, world-class phone capabilities, and exceptionally long battery life.”

Tegra 4i’s new 2.3 GHz CPU was jointly designed by NVIDIA and ARM, and is the most efficient, highest performance CPU core on the market.

“Tegra 4i is the very latest SoC solution based on the ARM Cortex-A9 processor and demonstrates the ability of ARM and our partners to continue to push the performance of technology and create exciting user experiences,” says Tom Cronk, executive vice president and general manager, processor division, ARM. “ARM and NVIDIA worked closely to further optimize the Cortex-A9 processor to drive performance and efficiency in areas such as streaming and responsiveness. This is an example of the collaboration and innovation that enables ARM technology-based solutions to be market drivers through multiple generations of SoC solutions.”

Utilizing the same architecture as Tegra 4’s GPU, Tegra 4i features five times the number of GPU cores of Tegra 3 for high-quality, console-quality gaming experiences and full 1080p HD displays. It also integrates an optimized version of the NVIDIA i500 software-defined radio modem which provides LTE capabilities, and makes networking upgradability and scalability fast and easy.

“NVIDIA’s Tegra 4i appears to outperform the leading integrated LTE chip significantly, and also benefits from an integrated ‘soft-modem’ that can be re-programmed over-the-air to support new frequencies and air interfaces – something other modem vendors can only dream of,” said Stuart Robinson, director, Handset Component Technologies Program at Strategy Analytics.”

Tegra 4i mobile processor’s camera capabilities include the NVIDIA Chimera[TM] Computational Photography Architecture recently announced in Tegra 4. This delivers many advanced features, including the world’s first always-on high dynamic range (HDR) capabilities, first tap to track functionality and first panoramic photos with HDR. SANTA CLARA, Calif.-Feb. 19, 2013-Forging a path for the next wave of advanced, consumer-focused mobile imaging experiences and applications, NVIDIA today announced new capabilities delivered by the NVIDIA(R) Chimera[TM] Computational Photography Architecture.

Available in the NVIDIA(R) Tegra(R) 4 family of mobile processors, Chimera[TM] architecture offers a number of features never before available on mobile devices, including always-on high-dynamic range (HDR) photos and videos, HDR panoramic and persistent tap-to-track capabilities.

NVIDIA developed Chimera to enable mobile photography to be as flexible and creative as it is convenient. Its suite of new features, supported by enormous visual computing power, delivers capabilities far beyond what’s currently available, even in high-end dedicated DSLR cameras, to mainstream smartphones and tablets.

“NVIDIA’s Chimera architecture takes mobile imaging far beyond what consumers have come to expect from the phones and tablets,” said Brian Cabral, Vice President of Computation Imaging at NVIDIA. “Capabilities that until now have been reserved for professional photographers – like instant HDR and HDR panoramic shots and flawless image tracking – are now within easy reach for the rest of us.”

Previous mobile device architectures have made it difficult to use the best tools for different parts of complex image processing. Chimera architecture removes those boundaries by providing the power to conduct nearly 100 billion mathematical operations per second to perform image processing, using computational techniques used in X-ray CT scanners, deep space telescopes and spy satellites.

First revealed at CES 2013, the architecture redefines mobile imaging with always-on HDR photos and videos. This allows camera users to instantly capture high-quality, HDR images similar to how the human eye sees the world – in a vast array of locations and scenes, and under diverse lighting conditions.

Additional new features include HDR panoramic, which takes wide-angle, or “fish-eye,” shots that normally require an expensive digital single-lens reflex camera. The Chimera architecture captures a scene while the camera moves – from side to side, up and down or diagonally – effectively “painting” a panorama in real time from many angles and in any order the user wants. In contrast, competing offerings must either be moved in one direction along a single horizontal plane, or require significant amounts of post processing – taking up to 35 seconds – to stitch together the panorama.

In another industry first, the Chimera architecture includes persistent tap-to-track technology, which allows users to touch the image of a person or object to focus on within a scene. The camera then locks in on that subject whether it moves or the camera is repositioned to a better angle, while maintaining proper focus. Persistent tap-to-track also adjusts the camera exposure depending on any movement, helping avoid under- or over-exposure of the image’s subject or background.

NVIDIA Chimera is available as technology integrated into the Tegra 4 family, including Tegra 4 – the world’s fastest mobile processor – and the new Tegra 4i – the first integrated Tegra LTE processor.

Support from Leading Industry Players

Device makers can use the architecture to create differentiated imaging solutions to ship with their smart phones and tablets. The architecture also provides an application programming interface (API) that developers can use to create enhanced imaging apps for the growing Android mobile customer base.

Two important players in the camera imaging sensor market, Sony and Aptina – with others to be announced – have already added support for the Chimera Computational Photography Architecture. Sony’s Exmor RS IMX135 13 MP sensor and Aptina’s AR0833 1/3″ 8MP mobile imaging sensor support Chimera architecture, bringing always-on HDR capabilities to market. Device makers can now adopt this technology into their Tegra 4-powered devices; dramatically enhancing their photo and video capabilities.
