LG Optimus Vu goes global, trades Snapdragon processor for NVIDIA Tegra 3

LG’s extra-wide handset appears to be embarking on a world tour, and its packing a new processor for the trip. The Optimus Vu will be taking NVIDIA’S Tegra 3 chip to select markets in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America this September. It’s still rocking that 5-inch 4:3 ratio IPS display, of course, but gone is any mention of LTE connectivity. There’s no word yet if we’ll see an LTE-equipped Tegra 3 handset hit Yankee shores when our time comes, but we certainly wouldn’t bat an eye. Read on for LG’s official press release.

Motorola Droid RAZR HD guides slip out to the web, pop the hype balloon (video)

Motorola Droid RAZR HD guides slip out to the web, pop the hype balloon video

Not that we were on pins and needles wondering what Motorola’s September 5th event would contain, but what vestige of mystery was left may just have been sapped away. A quartet of Motorola tutorial videos newly uncovered by YouTube user revowii walk users through the unannounced XT926, better known in unofficial circles as the Droid RAZR HD. It’s all about the looks in this leak: other than the conspicuous link to Verizon, what’s mostly validated here is the expected use of a customized Android 4.0 with on-screen navigation keys, much like the Atrix HD in AT&T’s corner of the universe. Earlier murmurings have the Droid RAZR HD carrying the same Snapdragon S4, 720p screen and LTE as well, which could leave the CDMA voice network, NFC and possibly increased storage as the only real differences. We’ll know the full truth in about two weeks’ time, but those who don’t mind a peek into the possible future can hop past the story break to indulge in some video time traveling.

AT&T: FaceTime over cellular feature to be included in Mobile Share plans at no extra charge, not available for other data plans

AT&T FaceTime over cellular will be offered to Mobile Share customers

AT&T is offering a bit of clarification on the rumors involving a standalone feature offering FaceTime over Cellular for an additional charge: the iOS6 feature (due out this fall) will actually be included at no extra cost, but only for those customers who opt for the Mobile Share plans. Anyone on the grandfathered unlimited data plans or traditional tiered offerings will only be able to rely on the good ‘ol WiFi whenever they feel the urge to use Apple’s video chat service. From the looks of it, it seems that AT&T is hoping to conserve the amount of network bandwidth that would be chewed up by unlimited customers, while also having it function as a value-added feature for its newest shared data plans. In terms of usage, this FaceTime capability will use up part of your data allotment (instead of minutes). So, the good news is that the feature is free — the bad news is that it won’t make unlimited users any happier. Find AT&T’s official statement below.

ZTE touts world’s first FD-LTE and TD-LTE mobile hotspot and USB modem

ZTE touts world's first FDLTE and TDLTE USB modem and mobile hotspot

You likely know the uncomfortable feeling when family members refuse to talk to each other, and such is the case with FD-LTE and TD-LTE — two similar but incompatible LTE technologies that’ve gained traction across the globe. Now ZTE is looking to play peacekeeper with its MF820S2 USB modem and MF91S mobile hotspot, each which speak fluently in both LTE languages. While Marvell was the first to accomplish this feat with its modem chipset, ZTE’s two globetrotting products are the first we’re aware of that are ready for retail shelves. That said, both units seem best suited for users based in China, as the fallback technologies include only TD-SCDMA and EDGE. ZTE’s USB modem is said to provide up to 68Mbps connectivity over TD-LTE networks and up to 100Mbps over the FD-LTE counterpart, whereas the mobile hotspot wields a 2,300mAh battery. As always, you’ll find the full PR after the break.

Pantech Flex 4G LTE handset teased for AT&T

If you were planning on attending the Pantech Beach Championships this weekend in Ocean City, MD, you might be able to catch a glimpse of an upcoming handset by the manufacturer. Dubbed the Pantech Flex, not much information has been given out by the manufacturer except to say that it will be a 4G LTE capable device and will be making its way onto AT&T’s network in the coming months. Apart from that, photos and additional specifications remain unknown at this point, although we guess it would be a safe assumption to think that it will at the very least be powered by Android, but it remains to be seen if it will prove to be a high-end phone capable of holding its own against devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3, or a low-mid ranged handset that will come with an affordable price tag. In any case the details should be provided this weekend at the Beach Championships event, so we guess we will learn more then. Smartphone users who have enjoyed Pantech’s previous offerings in the past, be sure to check back with us as we keep you updated with the details!

Smart Communications' new 4G LTE launch details slip out in Philippines, quickly get pulled

Mabuhay, Philippines. We’ve covered the Pearl of the Orient Seas’ affinity for electric tricycles, green billboards and a certain cool-looking logo before. This time, it’s all about the Gs as select locations in Metro Manila are apparently in line to get high-speed wireless coverage via a new 4G LTE network being launched by Smart Communications on August 25th. The launch was first reported by Philippines-based site MisterJonjon.com, which has since taken down the post at the company’s request. Areas scheduled to get coverage include parts of financial center Makati as well as locations around the SM Mall of Asia and the University of the Philippines’ Diliman campus, to name a few. The site also reported that Smart will offer customers a Huawei USB LTE stick for free and charge a monthly rate of 3,500 Philippine pesos (about $83). All in all, the company is set to activate 49 LTE base stations during the launch. For more, check out the snapshot of the pulled post through the source link.

[Thanks, Neil]

Windows 8 RT tablets to sell for $300 less than Intel-based counterparts, says Lenovo exec

Windows 8 RT tablets to sell for $300 less than Intel-based counterparts, says Lenovo exec

Microsoft and its OEM partners haven’t been particularly forthcoming on how much the first round of Windows 8 tablets are going to cost, but one Lenovo executive just gave us a hint. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, David Schmoock, Senior VP of Lenovo’s North American division, said that full-on Windows 8 tablets would ring up between $600 and $700, noting that ARM-based Windows RT slates would sell for $200 to $300 less. “RT will play in consumer and retail at very aggressive price points,” he said. This echoes previous reports that suggested Microsoft would introduce the Surface with a competitive $200 price tag. The Lenovo VP didn’t reveal any specific prices, of course, but his estimates would put the ThinkPad Tablet 2 somewhere between $300 and $500. Schmoock also commented on Ultrabook sales, stating that he didn’t think Intel would meet its lofty saturation goals: 40 percent of the market by the end of 2012. “They’ll be a lot bigger than they are now,” he admitted, “but I don’t know if it will get all the way up to 40 percent.”

Motorola XT907 gets approved by the FCC with Verizon LTE on board

It’s just another day in the life of the FCC, but it’s a big deal to anyone looking forward to yet another Droid RAZR in Verizon’s future. The XT907, a rumored midrange handset, just got pushed through the federal approval process today with Big Red’s LTE bands, NFC and the standard CDMA / EVDO radios to boot. We’ll keep digging to see what else we can find about the device, but at least the FCC has blessed us with yet another fun mystery to solve.

Pantech Flex teased for AT&T LTE, will be available in the ‘coming months’

Pantech Flex teased for AT&T LTE, will be available in the 'coming months'Well, this is one of the more… creative ways to tease a forthcoming product. Pantech is ready to show off its latest AT&T LTE device, the Flex, but it’s taking to its popular Dew Tour to do so. Pantech is quite scant on specific information and isn’t providing photos yet, but it did mention that the new device will be available in the coming months. Hopefully this is the handset we saw go through the FCC not too long ago, but we’ll keep you posted as more information comes in. In the meantime, the Flex will be exhibited this weekend at the Pantech Beach Championships in Ocean City, MD. Check out the full press release after the break.
