DOJ, FCC clear Verizon buyout of cable companies’ spectrum, require giving up some airwaves

Verizon logoVerizon has been fighting hard to get its acquisition of cable companies’ wireless frequencies past legal hurdles, and it just surged over the most important of the bunch: both the Department of Justice and the FCC have signed off on the agreement. To get the $3.9 billion deal through the door, Big Red will have to offload some of its spectrum to other companies. The DOJ, meanwhile, is more concerned that Verizon is getting a little too cozy with Bright House, Comcast, Cox and Time Warner Cable in terms of marketing and reselling bundles that include cellular and cable access. Closing the deal also requires setting up a new joint venture in technology research. We’re still working to learn the full details of the deal, but the spectrum handover will likely give a swift kick to Verizon’s 4G capacity — and anger a few rivals who wouldn’t have wanted any handover to go through.

Dish Network’s nationwide satellite broadband service could be ready to launch soon

Dish Network's nationwide satellite brodband service could be ready to launch soon

While the various strands of Dish Network’s “Seinfeld strategy” have yet to come together officially, Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal are reporting it could be ready launch satellite-based high speed data services nationally as soon as September or October. This would be separate from the service based on ViaSat’s Exede that’s available in some areas, and Bloomberg‘s sources say it could accommodate up to 2 million customers right away through a satellite Echostar launched in June, although more satellites may be needed to add more customers. Other than hooking up data connections for customers in rural areas, it would let Dish compete directly with data / TV bundles offered by wired pay-TV providers. Of course, this is all dependent on a favorable ruling by the FCC on its technology — you can just ask LightSquared what happens if that doesn’t work out.

Verizon's LTE network hits 34 new markets tomorrow, set to cover over 75 percent of the US

Big Red’s push to blanket the entire US with those lovable Long Term Evolution waves just got a heck of a lot closer, as the carrier’s announced it’s bringing true 4G to 34 new markets and expanding coverage in other parts of the country. For starters, folks around Hot Springs, Arkansas, Reading, Pennsylvania, Longview, Washington and Laredo, Texas will finally be able to get the most out that marvelous Galaxy S III — or, perhaps, something like the newfangled Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. Meanwhile, Verizon’s also let it be known it’s expanding LTE coverage in previously covered markets, including big-name cities such as New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New Orleans. There are more cities involved in the process, but for that our friends, you’ll have to peek at the presser located right after the break.

LTE equipped Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 lands on Verizon August 17th

The WiFi version of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 has been available for some time, but now Verizon will be offering an LTE-enabled version of the tablet starting from August 17th. Previously if you wanted a tablet in the 7-inch range and wanted LTE, you’d have had to cough up a hefty amount of money for the Galaxy Tab 7.7, but Verizon will be offering the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 for a reasonable $350 off-contract.

The LTE version of the tablet features similar same specs to the WiFi-only version, with a dual-core 1.2Ghz processor, 7-inch PLS 1024×600 display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage with a microSD card slot, and three megapixel camera. The Tab 2 7.0 also comes with a front-facing VGA camera and runs Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box.

As Samsung has fitted the tablet with an LTE radio, customers will be able to surf the information superhighway with fast speeds on Verizon’s network rather than relying on WiFi. On top of that, the Tab 2 7.0 is Samsung Approved for Enterprise, featuring 256-bit AES encryption and support for Microsoft’s Exchange ActiveSync as well as support for VPNs and MDM solutions.

At $350 off-contract, it’s not a bad deal at all, even if you won’t be getting the latest and greatest specs. Still, if this sounds like your next tablet, then make sure to pick one up on Verizon’s website or in a retail store starting from August 17th.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 packing 4G LTE comes to Verizon on August 17th

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 70 packing 4G LTE comes to Verizon on August 17th

Verizon subscribers jonesing for a 7-inch LTE tablet won’t have to consider springing for the pricey Galaxy Tab 7.7 any longer. The carrier just revealed plans to offer up a 4G-equipped (and previously hinted) version of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 starting on August 17th. There’s no revolution under the hood outside of the cellular link: it’s still toting Android 4.0, the rear 3.2-megapixel and front VGA cameras, a (slightly faster) 1.2GHz dual-core chip and a somewhat thin 8GB of built-in memory. At the $350 contract-free asking price, however, the tinier Galaxy Tab is low-hanging fruit for data lovers.

LG Achieves sale of five million LTE Smartphones around the world!

LG announced that that it reached a new milestone with global sales of five million LTE smartphones to date. After reaching sales of four million LTE smartphones last month, an additional one million smartphones were sold in the month of July – one LTE smartphone roughly every two and a half seconds.
LG released the first LTE smartphone “RevolutionTM by LG” in the U.S. in May of last year through the largest carrier Verizon Wireless and expanded its LTE target markets with its global LTE …

4G LTE Blackberry Play could be headed AT&T’s way

While RIM’s Blackberry Playbook tablet isn’t exactly the device that everyone’s queuing up for or selling out, the company has made it a more attractive device by adding 4G LTE support to it. Unfortunately at this point in time, the 4G Playbook is only available in Canada, although plans to roll it out to US, Europe and the rest of the world is definitely in the cards, but how soon, and more importantly, which carriers in the US will be supporting it?

Thanks to the latest developer beta OS for the Playbook that has been rolled out today, bundled AT&T apps were spotted, thus suggesting that AT&T could be one of the carriers to support RIM’s 4G LTE Blackberry Playbook. It should also be noted that Verizon is another possibility as the Verizon Wireless store tab made a brief appearance in the App World in the past. In any case this isn’t a confirmation but if you are looking forward to the 4G Playbook, then perhaps you might want to keep an eye on both these carriers. Until then be sure to check back with us for more updates.

LG sells five million LTE smartphones worldwide

Everyone may be scrambling to get their hands on Samsung’s Galaxy S III or lusting after the HTC One X, but LG has poked its head up just to let everyone know it sells smartphones too. The company has announced that it’s managed to sell five million LTE handsets across the world. One million of those were sold in the month of July alone, with LG citing strong LTE markets like South Korea, Japan, and the United States.

LG says that by far the most popular LTE handset is the Optimus LTE, managing to amass two million devices sold. The Optimus LTE II, meanwhile, became one of the fastest selling LTE phones, reportedly selling 500,000 units in its first 70 days of life. As for the quirky Optimus Vu, LG says that its managed to shift 500,000 since its release in South Korea in March. The handset will be making its way to the United States shortly on Verizon, so we’ll have to see how receptive an American audience is to the device.

The company is planning a variant of the Optimus LTE II in the United States on Verizon’s network, the VS930. Pictures emerged of the handset last month, showing off a fairly basic design, with reports indicating the handset will feature a 4.7-inch IPS display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, NFC support, and LTE connectivity as well as world roaming capabilities.

A leaked service manual for the phone indicated that Ice Cream Sandwich will be onboard out of the box, and the handset will pack a 2,150mAh battery. The release date for the handset was tipped for July 13th, but the date came and went without any form of an announcement. No doubt Verizon will reveal it in due course, and we’ll let you know when the company does.

LG sells five million LTE smartphones, plans ‘second to none’ lineup soon and girds for patent battles

LG five million LTE smartphones, plans 'second to none' lineup soon and girds for patent battles

While LG’s dollars and cents return on its cellphones have been up and down this year, the company just announced that since starting the LTE trend with the Revolution in May 2011 it’s sold five million high-speed data connected handsets and has no plans to slow down. The counter ticked over three million back in May, four million in June and, according to LG, sales continued at a pace of one phone every two and a half seconds. That includes two million Optimus LTEs, over 500,000 Optimus Vus and about the same number of Optimus LTE IIs in the first 70 days alone. Now the Korean company is preparing to take its Optimus Vu phablet global, and CEO Dr. Jon-seok Park says its LTE phones in the next few months will be “second to none.” Finally, there’s a note about LG having the “largest overall” total number of patents, claimed to be worth $8 billion, which is possibly intended to ward off the kind of patent trouble currently chasing Samsung.

Samsung SGH-T899 for T-Mobile emerges on the web with potential Windows Phone 8, LTE

Samsung SGHT899 for TMobile emerges from the web's depths with potential Windows Phone 8, LTE

User agent profiles on the web aren’t always guarantees of what you’ll get in a future device, but this is one of those moments where we’d like the details to be true. A Samsung-made Windows Phone 8 device for T-Mobile, the SGH-T899, lines up closely with the higher-end Odyssey we’d previously only seen in a purported roadmap. Along with alluding to the OS itself through the presence of Internet Explorer 10, there’s a reference to the hinted-at 1,280 x 720 screen that you won’t find on any Windows Phone 7 gear. The profile even contains a suggestion of LTE support, although we’re still wondering whether or not this would be very aggressive futureproofing or just an incidental aspect of the possible Snapdragon S4 chip — Magenta isn’t flicking the LTE switch until 2013. At least the rumored fall release date gives us a comparatively short wait before we learn whether the Odyssey and T899 are one and the same, or real at all.
