Hasta La Gadget!

Having launched an all-out blitz on the high-end of US smartphones, Samsung must be eager to conquer the mid-range as well. A Verizon rebate list finding its way to Droid-Life has the previously unknown Galaxy Stellar showing up amongst the carrier’s more budget-minded smartphones for a $50 discount sometime between now and an August 19th expiry date. There’s little we can definitively attach to that starry-eyed name so far, although we have our hunches: first and foremost is that it’s the Jasper, the Snapdragon S4-touting spiritual successor to the Droid Charge. It might alternately be the even more mysterious SCH-i415, which just showed up at the FCC this weekend and could be a world-roaming sequel to the Stratosphere (SCH-i405) with CDMA, LTE and GSM all rolled into one. Whether the Galaxy Stellar is one of these two devices or something entirely off of the map, there’s a strong indication between this, Sprint’s mystery SPH-L300 and the slightly more tangible Galaxy Reverb that Samsung will leave no CDMA corner unturned in the near future.

If the now-deleted @evleaks is / was to be believed, Samsung is preparing a low-price handset for Sprint’s big yellow network. The pulled feed revealed that the Galaxy Reverb (SPH-M950) will pack a Snapdragon MSM8655, a 4-inch 800 x 480 WVGA display, 768MB RAM, 4GB on-board storage and Ice Cream Sandwich. Photography enthusiasts should know that there’s a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facer for those self-portrait moments. There’s no word on if it packs LTE, but given the limited quantity of Sprint markets that can currently use the standard, we wouldn’t get our hopes up just yet.

We’ve seen a bevy of leaks and reports regarding the next iteration of Apple’s iPhone, and now some more information has come to light regarding the manufacturing of the sequel to the iPhone 4S. BGR reports that the next-generation iPhone is currently in the EVT3 phase. That means that engineering samples are still being used at this point in time, with the “design verification tests” still needing to be passed before the phone can go into full-scale production.

Even when the phone hits DVT, it can go through multiple iterations as engineers try to iron out any problems with the phone. The main piece of information to take away is that the iPhone hasn’t yet entered final production, so the leaked backplates that we’ve seen may not be the final story. Additionally, BGR has confirmed that the next iPhone will feature LTE connectivity, as well as NFC support. RAM has also reportedly been doubled from 512MB to 1GB.

Several reports have indicated that Apple plans to increase the size of the next iPhone to the 4-inch range. The resolution of the display will also be increased to 1136×640, marking a shift to a 16:9 ratio. Core iOS 6 apps will be redesigned to take advantage of the additional vertical space, and Apple will reportedly encourage developers to do the same when it unveils the change. Leaked backplates for the next iPhone have suggested a design not too far removed from the iPhone 4S, but with a two-toned aluminium back. The phone will also feature a smaller 19-pin dock connector and redesigned speaker holes.

If the LG Optimus Vu’s insistence on running Gingerbread was the sole factor keeping you from its 5-inch HD-IPS display and its goofy 4:3 aspect ratio, your prayers may have been answered. According to a leaked gallery of images at Android Police, the oversized slab’s rumored Verizon variant will be running Android 4.0.4. The images don’t reveal much else –save for big red’s standard logo, prominently stamped above the device’s face — but that’s one less negative you can count from our review.
