Reusable e-Ink Luggage Tags Improve the Chances Of Your Bag Arriving

Outside of the fear of flying, the most anxious part of traveling around the world is hoping your bags get to the same destination as you do. The paper tags in use today work, but if they get accidentally torn off your luggage, who knows where it might end up. So starting next month, British Airways will begin testing a brilliant re-usable luggage tag featuring an e-ink display that can be reprogrammed again and again using your smartphone.

British Airways teams up with Designworks for electronic bag tags that nab info from your smartphone

Tired of ripping off those old luggage tags after a trip? Well, those could be a thing of the past if all goes according to plan — at least when flying British Airways. The airline cooked up an electronic bag tag that looks to discard the paper version with the help of the folks at Designworks. Once passengers have checked in, they simply need to hover a smartphone over the tag to beam (via NFC, we’d surmise) both flight info and the requisite barcode to the tag’s display. The idea behind the whole thing isn’t only to keep the paper-changing to a minimum, but to also save precious time at the check-in counter. A live trial of the tagging gadget is planned, so we’ll soon be able to see if the concept stands up to baggage handlers.

Airbus Bag2Go Smart Luggage: All It Needs to Do Now Is to Follow Me Automatically

Luggage hasn’t changed much in the last few decades, but there’s hope on the horizon. How about having suitcases with built-in GPS that you will never lose again? I’d certainly consider that, since losing your luggage can certainly get painful at times.

The Airbus Bag2Go is a prototype and it’s a sort of “smart luggage,” carrying sensors that work with an app in order to bypass the usual airport BS. It has got an RFID that lets travelers check in their bags and link to it on every step of their itinerary. GPS tracking will alert travelers to potential tampering. The luggage is being developed by Rimowa and T-Mobile.

While spending a lot of money on luggage isn’t my cup of tea, renting one of these on long trips could be quite useful.

Airbus Bag2Go smart luggage wields GPS, RFID to skip airport hassles

Many of us avoid flying with checked baggage when possible, and for good reason: even a simple delay can sour a whole trip. Airbus’ new Bag2Go prototype could save us from having to pack light, however. The smart luggage carries a raft of sensors that work with an iOS app to bypass the usual airport drudgery. Its RFID chip lets travelers check in their bag and link it to every step of their itinerary; in theory, couriers can ship baggage to the hotel at a lower cost than usual. Bag2Go should also provide some reassurance through GPS tracking and alerts to any possible tampering. Airbus is still early into development, but it foresees a business model where customers can either buy a Bag2Go suitcase at a premium or rent one for a long vacation. As for us? We’ll just be happy if our luggage avoids an unexpected detour to Belize.

Trakdot Luggage Tracking Thingamajig Pre-Orders Begin

Back in early January, we talked about the Trakdot luggage tracking device. At the time, we knew a lot of the details on the product with the exception of one of the most essential – when you could buy it. That final piece of the puzzle has now been unveiled.

GlobaTrac has announced that the Trakdot tracking system is now available for pre-order and will ship in late June. The pricing remains the same at $49.99(US). The device uses a cellular network to triangulate your bag’s location rather than GPS.

There is an activation fee of $8.99, but those the pre-order before April 27 won’t have to pay that particular fee. The annual service fee is $12.99 for a year of cellular-based tracking. You have to be seriously concerned about the whereabouts of your bag to resort to this sort of equipment. I have a much easier method of keeping track of my bag, I simply don’t fly anywhere where everything I need can’t fit in a carry-on.

Pre-Damaged Luggage: You Don’t Have to Worry, It’s Already Dinged Up

Whenever you go on a plane and check your luggage, it always feels like a gamble. You might never see it again or it might be all banged up when you get it back, because we know that luggage gets tossed around a lot on planes.

The Crash Baggage line was created by Venetian designer Francesco Pavia, after observing that new suitcases can easily get beaten up, creating added stress while traveling. This new design is supposed to be a workaround. If your luggage is already beaten up, you never have to worry about it getting damaged.

The hard-shelled plastic luggage already comes with the typical dents caused by frequent use. Over time, any new dents will just add more character. Crash Baggage will be available for purchase April 1st and will come in four sizes – including 2 carry-ons – starting at $135(USD) each.

Pre-Damaged Luggage Makes a Baggage Handler’s Job So Much Easier

The staff at your local airport responsible for getting your bags onto a plane in a timely manner are particularly skilled at damaging and destroying even the most rugged of suitcases. So why not beat them to the punch with pre-distressed luggage that looks like it’s already been through countless flights—at least two. More »
