Nokia Camera Update Brings RAW Support To Lumia 1520 And Lumia 1020

Nokia Camera Update Brings RAW Support To Lumia 1520 And Lumia 1020

Some of Nokia’s latest devices are known for their imaging capabilities, take the Lumia 1020 for example, its the only Windows Phone 8 device out there with a 41 megapixel camera. The company recently unveiled the Lumia 1520, a WP8 phablet with a 20 megapixel PureView camera. Nokia also released an app called Refocus recently, which lets users shift focus in an image even after it has been snapped. Today, a new update for Nokia Camera app has been announced which brings RAW support to the Lumia 1520 as well as the Lumia 1020.

Digital cameras typically save pictures in JPEG format as the pictures are automatically processed. An image in RAW format is untouched, which allows the photographer to process it manually using softwares such as Adobe Lightroom. While RAW compatibility might not appeal to the average user, it will definitely make photography enthusiasts salivate. Once the app is downloaded, users will have to manually select the RAW DNG setting in the camera settings menu. The file size of the image will be significantly larger than a JPEG file. Lumia 1520 isn’t available in the market as yet, but it will be on November 22nd. Customers who receive their devices that day will be able to download the Nokia Camera app right away. Lumia 1020 users will have to wait until early 2014 though, as support for RAW will be part and parcel of the Lumia Black update.

Google Nexus 5′s Camera Compared Against The Nokia Lumia 1020

Google Nexus 5s Camera Compared Against The Nokia Lumia 1020When it comes to smartphone cameras, safe to say the Nokia Lumia 1020 is currently dominating the rest of the competition, which is saying something as camera quality is a serious consideration when someone plans to buy a new smartphone. The question is, how does it stack against the recently released Google Nexus 5? While the Nexus 5’s camera was never really touted as one of its selling points, most reviews found the camera to be OK only, with nothing to shout about, and the comparison photos between the Lumia 1020 and the Nexus 5 certainly speak volumes.

The comparison photos were taken by Felix Hamer and to give the Nexus 5 a fair shot, the Lumia 1020’s zoom and Xenon flash were not used. One of the comparison photos can be seen in photo above, with the top portion of the photo coming from the Lumia 1020, while the bottom is from the Nexus 5. Surprisingly the Nexus 5 is able to hold its own and while the Lumia 1020 is a little sharper, both photos look relatively good and unless you’re planning on printing and framing them, they should be more than passable to be used on Facebook and other social media websites. To see the rest of the comparison photos, hit up AAWP for the details, but in the meantime what do you guys think?

Nokia Lumia 1020 Used To Shoot Ellie Goulding’s New Music Video

When it comes to smartphone cameras, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is no slouch. In fact some consider it to have the best smartphone camera on the market at the moment, beating out the likes of Apple’s iPhone 5 which some consider to be one of the better cameras on the market. But how good are we talking about? Would you be able to tell if a video was shot entirely with the Nokia Lumia 1020? Well we certainly couldn’t and if you have a few minutes to spare, you might want to check out the music video above which features Ellie Goulding’s “How Long Will I Love You” song. (more…)

Nokia Russia Offers Free Photography Lessons For Lumia 1020 Customers

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is probably one of Nokia’s best camera phones to date and so far based on what we have heard, it is comparable, if not better, than the top smartphones out there like the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S4. In any case what’s the point of having such a great camera on a smartphone if you don’t know how to use it, right? Well it looks like Nokia is attempting to right the wrong because over in Russia, it seems that Nokia Russia is offering their Lumia 1020 customers free photography lessons that will hopefully improve their photography skills, allowing to fully take advantage of the Lumia 1020’s camera.

The photography lessons are conducted online and will be held with Russian photography school, fotoshkola.net that is worth around $40. The tutorials will be delivered by famed Russian photographer, Vladimir Kotov, and students will also be expected to work on homework assignments and have their photos reviewed by a team. For Russian Lumia 1020 owner if you guys want to take advantage of this promotion, all you’d have to do is install the Fotoshkola app on your device, in which you will receive a PIN that allows you to redeem the lessons for free. This offer is valid until the 14th of January 2014. Pretty awesome idea we reckon; who else would love to see Nokia offer this to other Lumia users around the world?

Vodafone UK And Nokia Offer Netflix For Lumia 1020 Customers

Vodafone UK And Nokia Offer Netflix For Lumia 1020 CustomersIf you’re living in the UK and you were thinking of picking up a Nokia Lumia device, perhaps the Nokia Lumia 1020 might be a phone worth considering. Granted the device is considered one of Nokia’s high-end devices and will come with a more expensive price tag, the good news is that if you were to get it via Vodafone UK, you will be getting yourself a one year subscription to Netflix. As it stands this offer appears to be valid only for the Lumia 1020, so for those looking for a more affordable device, we guess you’d be out of luck.

This move comes as Netflix is hoping to gain more footing over in Europe, especially when they are faced with local equivalents such as LoveFilm, so together with this offering, would-be Lumia 1020 customers in the UK will be able to enjoy Netflix’s services for a year, which hopefully will translate into a longer subscription after that, not to mention this deal will probably make Nokia’s devices a tad more attractive to those who love watching videos while on the go. So, any of our readers in the UK planning on picking up a Lumia 1020 after hearing about this deal?

Nokia Lumia 1020′s Camera Wins In A Blind Camera Shoot-Out

Nokia Lumia 1020s Camera Wins In A Blind Camera Shoot OutWhen it comes to smartphones with great cameras, only a handful of devices come to mind and one of them is the Nokia Lumia 1020. Ultimately it does boil down to personal preference but it seems when it comes to a majority vote, the Lumia 1020 wins. This is according to the folks at Phone Arena who have conducted a blind comparison poll between some of the big name phones out there. This included the HTC One, the LG G2, the iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, Samsung Galaxy S4, and the Nokia Lumia 1020. All photos were resized to 13MP with their EXIF data removed so users won’t be able to tell which phone took which photo.

The readers were then asked to choose which photo they thought looked best and according to the polls, the Nokia Lumia 1020 beat out the competition by a large margin, taking 62.19% of the votes! Samsung’s Galaxy S4 was in second place with 20.91% of the votes, followed by the iPhone 5s, the LG G2, the iPhone 5c, and finally the HTC One. It was an interesting test and if you’d like to see the rest of the test, hit up Phone Arena’s website for the details.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Ad Pokes Fun At Samsung

Nokia Lumia 1020 Ad Pokes Fun At SamsungBoth Nokia and Microsoft have been taking digs at the competition in the past few months, with the most recent one from Nokia where the Finnish company made fun of the recent Apple Maps mishap. However thanks to a recent billboard sighting from Nokia over on Lombard Street, California, it looks like Nokia could be taking another jab at Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Zoom, especially since the ad for the Nokia Lumia 1020 reads, “The most megapixels you can fit into a pair of skinny jeans.”

For those who are unfamiliar with the Galaxy S4 Zoom, this is a smartphone by Samsung that shares some of the hardware specs of the Galaxy S4, with the main difference being that the phone will pack a 16MP camera on the back. However the design of the phone felt more like a camera rather than a smartphone, making it an extremely bulky device, at least when compared to the more svelte Lumia 1020. While the Lumia 1020 does pack more megapixels when compared to the Galaxy S4 Zoom, it should be noted that more megapixels aren’t necessarily a good thing, nor does it determine a camera’s quality, but it’s still a pretty funny ad nonetheless.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Sells Out At Indian Retailer

Nokia Lumia 1020 Sells Out At Indian RetailerFor some reason or the other, Nokia appears to be doing pretty well in India. We had heard reports of the Lumia 520 selling out in the region, and presumably so due to its affordable price tag which makes it an ideal purchase in emerging markets such as India, but interestingly enough it looks like the Lumia 1020 has managed to sell out as well. The handset has yet to officially debut in India (arriving soon) but according to reports, one particular retailer has managed to sell out of its inventory of the Lumia 1020 device in yellow, black, and white offerings.

Like we said this is an interesting case because it was thought that the main reason the Lumia 520 did so well was due to its low price point. However this is only one retailer in India and might not necessarily apply to all other retailers so we might be getting ahead of ourselves here, but if this is the start of something, it looks like Nokia might find themselves with another hit in India again.

It is not completely unheard of to find certain regions in the world preferring a particular operating system. After all it was a couple of years ago where a survey was conducted where it was found that Europeans liked the Bada operating system despite it not being popular in other parts of the world.

PSA: the Nokia Lumia 1020 arrives in the UK today

PSA: the Nokia Lumia 1020 arrives in the UK today

Let’s face it — we can’t be sure Nokia’s Lumia 1020 is worth the hype until it’s taken a thousand shots of Big Ben and Westminster tube station. Fortunately for us, the PureView-toting handset is landing in the UK from today. We’ve managed to wrangle confirmation that Vodafone, Three and O2 will be selling the unit, but alas, EE currently has no plans to offer the handset to its million-strong LTE customer base. We suspect more than a few of you, disappointed at Cupertino’s latest imaging update, may be throwing your cash at the screen right now.
