At Nokia World last month, the company unveiled its Lumia 1520 smartphone and also showed off its new Refocus app. The app does what its name says, it allows users to take advantage of multiple levels of focus in one single image. Nokia has now released the Refocus app for existing Lumia PureView smartphones, which includes the Lumia 920, 925, 928 and the 1020.

The app has been designed for scenes with great contrast in the depth of field. To obtain the best results, users are advised to first focus on the object that’s closest to them. Once the closest object is in focus, tapping the screen starts the capture process which will take a few seconds, having a steady hand will definitely be a plus. Basically it captures 2-8 images depending upon what’s in view, each image is at five megapixels at a different focus, they’re all aligned and combined into a single image in which objects can be refocused. Tap any part of the finished image to shift focus on it. Color pop, a feature in the Nokia Creative Studio, has been added to the Refocus app. The feature allows users to retain color in the section they want to shift the focus to, while the rest of the image turns black and white, with contrast being slightly adjusted on the way.

It was just the other day when we heard both the Nokia Lumia 1520 and 2520 might be released on November 22, which is already a big day for Microsoft seeing how their Xbox One will be releasing on the same day. Earlier it was reported that Nokia’s Lumia 1520 could make its way onto AT&T come 15^th of November. This “leak” came from Microsoft themselves as they had placed the device up for pre-order, but as it turns out someone at Microsoft might have jumped the gun as the link that takes you to the Microsoft page has since been taken down. Instead according to the folks at WPCentral, they claim that the release of the Nokia Lumia 1520 and the Nokia Lumia 2520 Windows tablet will instead see a release on the 22^nd of November. Wonder why that date sounds familiar? Well it’s because that’s the date that Microsoft will be officially launching their next-gen console, the Xbox One!

WPCentral has managed to “confirm” that the devices will be launched simultaneously on the 22^nd of November, with the Lumia 2520 tablet headed towards Verizon on the same day itself. Assuming their information is accurate, it sounds as if the 22^nd of November will be a pretty big day for the folks at Microsoft and Nokia, but we have to wonder if it’s wise launching so many products all at once? One of the features that Nokia touted about the Lumia 1520 during their Nokia World event was its display, with the phone not only sporting a Full HD 1080p display that puts other Windows Phone devices and even Apple’s iPhone to shame, but also its ClearBlack IPS LCD screen with Apica’s Assertive display technology that would allow the phone to work in the sunlight just fine. Of course these are merely claims and are used for marketing, right? Well perhaps not because in a comparison done by the folks at GadgetBoys, they have decided to pit the Lumia 1520 against the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and the iPhone 5s, with the results viewable in the video above.

For those who don’t have the time, well safe to say the Lumia 1520 was the clear winner and very obviously dominated the rest of the competition. Personally speaking, we think the iPhone 5s came in second, with the Galaxy Note 3 trailing in third, and with the Xperia Z Ultra’s display coming in at fourth place. What do you guys think? Nokia’s 1520 has been announced fresh off the news wires, where we do know that the device should cost $749 thereabouts prior to taxes and subsidies being applied. Of course, the selling price will be higher than that where unlocked units are concerned, as that had always been more of the norm than the exception. According to Nstore, a “Nokia premium partner” in Italy, they are already taking down pre-orders for the Lumia 1520, where they have asked €699.99 (loosely converted to $966) for it, and it will include an initial deposit of €99.90. It does seem as though the store will have the Lumia 1520 in stock from November onward.

Just to refresh our memories on what the Nokia Lumia 1520 comes with, it will be the first Windows Phone 8 smartphone in the world to come with a 6” Full HD display, a quad-core 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, LTE and HSPA connectivity, NFC support, active noise cancellation, a 20MP PureView rear camera with dual LED flash, 1,2MP front-facing camera, 2GB RAM, 32GB of internal memory, 7GB of free SkyDrive storage, a microSD memory card slot, and a 3,400 mAh battery with wireless charging capabilities.

What else do we know about the Nokia Lumia 1520? Well, for the model that will arrive at AT&T as an exclusive, it will come with 16GB of storage by default. Not only that, it has also been spotted with a Treasure Finder Tag, too.
