Nokia Lumia 510 Gets Second Windows Phone 7.8 ROM Update

nokia 510 wpupdate Nokia Lumia 510 Gets Second Windows Phone 7.8 ROM UpdateDo you feel or think that Windows Phone 7.8 is the final and polished product? Well, all I can say is, if you think so, good for you, and let us leave it at that. Microsoft on the other hand, thinks otherwise, and that Windows Phone 7.8 is clearly a work in progress as Nokia has just pushed out a second ROM update for the Nokia Lumia 510, which should overwrite the Windows Phone 7.8 that shipped with the Lumia 510 in the first place.

Apparently, the latest Lumia 510 firmware has appeared on Navifirm, where it will bump up the operating system version from 12460 to 12490. We are absolutely in the dark as to what is new with this particular build, but chances are all updates and upgrades should squash some notable bugs, make the entire experience more efficient, and in this case, one can safely presume that it will deliver performance and stability tweaks. Have you installed the new Windows Phone 7.8 ROM update already, and how do you find it?

Windows Phone 7.8 On Nokia Lumia 510?

The Nokia Lumia 510 is the first of Windows Phone-powered smartphones from Finnish phone manufacturer Nokia, and it has come some way, only to be superseded by the chart topping Nokia Lumia 920 – the new flagship for the label. Well, it seems that owners who are still rocking out to their Nokia Lumia 510 will be pleased to hear that there might just be an operating system update rolling out for their handset, where it will be Windows Phone 7.8. This would mean the Lumia 510’s relative low specifications are not an issue for the Windows Phone 7.8 update, but you can bet your bottom hard earned dollar that it is unable to deliver all the goodies that Windows Phone 8 brings with it. What do you think of this bit of news – does Windows Phone 7.8 running on your Nokia Lumia 510 sound appealing to you, or have you already decided to take the plunge and enter into the world of the Lumia 920 (read our review)?

Nokia Lumia 510 hands-on

Nokia Lumia 510 handson

Squeezing in between Nokia’s Asha series and the Lumia 610, the wallet-friendly Lumia 510 has been unveiled in India. The smartphone will be priced around $199 when it ships next month in India and China. It will eventually make its way to other Asia-Pacific countries and South America, but there’s no news yet on any stateside availability. We did expect this Microsoft-powered device to turn up with version 7.8 of its mobile OS, but instead, there’s Windows Phone 7.5 and the promise to an eventual upgrade. We’ve got more impressions after the break.

Nokia Lumia 510 announced, carries Windows Phone 7.5 with it

Nokia did make quite a splash with their high end Windows Phone 8 handsets being announced not too long ago, where the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 certainly brought about its fair share of fans. In fact, the Lumia 920 is shaping up pretty nicely to be able to hold its own against other flagship models in the market, but what about those who do not have the kind of freely flowing cash? I guess this is where a compromise comes in handy – settling for somewhere in the middle, or in the case of the Nokia Lumia 510, it would be somewhere more towards the entry level market.

After all, the Nokia Lumia 510 will not run on Windows Phone 8 at all, but rather, it will ply its trade on the Windows Phone 7.5 platform, which is a half-way point between Windows Phone 7 and its successor, the powerful Windows Phone 8. Having said that, the Lumia 510’s announcement would clearly make it the Finnish company’s most affordable Lumia to date, and this does not mean that Nokia has compromised on quality and style, as you can choose from five eye-catching colors: red, yellow, cyan, white and black.

I am quite sure that many of us would ask, just what kind of entry level specifications could we be looking at over here? For starters, there is a 4-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display at 800 × 480 resolution, while its 256MB RAM will be accompanied by 4GB of internal memory. Power users, you know for sure that this is not the handset for you. Nokia has also thrown in a 5-megapixel auto-focus that does video recording in VGA resolution @30fps, which is nothing to shout about – but rather, you will not find the likes of this in higher specced handsets.

Nokia expects the Lumia 510 to be available from next month onwards in India, China, South America and Asia, with an approximate price tag of $199 prior to local taxes and operator subsidies. Would you be interested?

Nokia Lumia 510 launched

Nokia knows that not everyone is able to afford a high end smartphone, which is why when they walked with Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, there is a market segment that is crying out for an affordable model. I guess that clarion call has been met with the launch of the Nokia Lumia 510, an entry-level smartphone which does not burn a hole in your pocket, and yet looking stylish like all get out, coming in five different colors – red, yellow, cyan, white and black.

The hardware specifications one can look forward to would be a 4″ TFT display at 800 x 480 resolution, 256MB RAM with 4GB of internal memory, a 5-megapixel shooter camera at the back that does VGA videos at 30fps, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi and WCDMA connectivity. A Snapdragon S1 runs proceedings from underneath the hood, and you will still be able to enjoy Windows Phone’s signature Live Tiles, letting you check out at-a-glance updates as well as enjoy speedy access to all that you want to work with. Having said that, bear in mind that this is a Windows Phone 7.5 device, so you know for sure it will not be a handset to use if you want to remain at the cutting edge.

Microsoft Office Mobile apps have also been thrown into the mix, while the Internet Explorer 9 web browser helps you use the Nokia Lumia 510 right out of the box as it arrives in India, China, South America and Asia for $199 thereabouts from next month onward.

Nokia launches budget Lumia 510 Windows Phone 75, 4inch display and 5megapixel camera

Confirming all those rumors we’ve been hearing, Nokia has officially taken the wraps off its latest budget smartphone, the Lumia 510 — slotting it somewhere between the Asha range and the Lumia 610. With the notable exception of the 4-inch (480 x 800) screen, which is a tad larger than its slightly more accomplished Windows Phone sibling, the other specs are very much in line with its low-cost stance: there’s a single 5-megapixel shooter at the back (no front-facer), a lowly 800MHz Qualcomm processor, 256MB RAM and 4GB of non-expandable storage. We’ll be bringing you further details as the story unfolds. In terms of the OS, it’ll ship with WP Mango but we’re told it will be upgraded to Windows Phone 7.8 at some point in the future.

Nokia’s Lumia 510 might have been spotted catching the noonday sun

If a rolling stone gathers no moss, then the rumors surrounding Nokia’s ultra-low-budget Lumia 510 have grown very mossy indeed. The folks over at GSMArena have snagged this glare-a-riffic snap of the prospective handset catching some rays in the finest of blurrycam traditions. Their tipster is also reiterating the specs we’ve seen before, talking up a Windows 7.8 handset with 256MB RAM, 800MHz CPU and 5-megapixel camera that’s destined to stand between the Asha and Lumia 610 at the lower end of its smartphone pantheon. For those who prefer blurry pictures that move, My Nokia Blog has turned up a brief hands-on video of the phone — check it out after the break.

Nokia Lumia 510 spotted in the wild, expected to be priced at $150

Towards the end of September, Nokia Europe announced the availability and pricing of the Lumia 920 and the Lumia 820 for certain countries in Europe. Given that the Nokia Lumia 920 is the Finnish company’s flagship phone, its price was somewhat expected, although personally it was higher than I expected. Either way if those prices put the Lumia 920 way out of your price range, then perhaps Nokia’s low-end Lumia phone, the Lumia 510, might be of interest to you. (more…)

Nokia Lumia 510 put under the regulatory limelight, hints lowcost Windows Phone 78 on the way

Here’s a contradiction in action: a Nokia phone that goes down a model number, but up in features. That’s what we’ll see if regulatory screenings and leaks surrounding the unreleased Lumia 510 are any indication. China’s TENAA, the FCC and Indonesia’s DG PosTel have all taken a look at the device ahead of time and point to a short, squat design that won’t have the budget chic of the Lumia 610. However, if Baidu tips are correct, the 510 may be an ever-so-slight upgrade to its higher-digit predecessor with a larger 4-inch screen and a likely fast track to Windows Phone 7.8. Just don’t anticipate more than the existing 800MHz Snapdragon, 256MB of RAM and 5-megapixel camera — or a US release, for that matter. The FCC has only tested the Lumia 510 against American GSM bands, which hints that its 3G support is meant for China, Indonesia and other countries where low-cost smartphones matter most.
