Nokia Lumia 928 for Verizon hands-on

Nokia Lumia 928 for Verizon handson

The Lumia 928 isn’t the first of Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 handsets to hit Verizon — that distinction goes to the 822 — but for all intents and purposes, it’s the first true flagship Lumia to bear Big Red’s branding. From the jump, you’ll note that Nokia’s bent somewhat to Verizon’s heavy hand, customizing the 928 in a way that shucks the smooth polycarbonate unibody of the 920 for something more hard-edged and angular, yet still plastic. So, what’s so new about this Lumia? Apart from its Xenon flash, nothing at all really. It bears the same 4.5-inch, 1,280 x 768 PureMotion HD+ display (now, OLED), 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor with 1GB RAM, 2,000 mAh battery, integrated wireless charging, NFC and 1.2-megapixel front-facing / 8.7-megapixel rear camera setup as the Lumia 920. Naturally, the 928’s made to run on Verizon’s network, so you’ll find support for LTE / CDMA, but there are also radios for HSPA+ making it “global ready.” We’ll have a review for this deviant Lumia coming shortly, but in the meantime follow along for our first impressions.

Nokia reveals another new Lumia smartphone in UK ad, teases ‘more than your eyes can see’ (video)

Nokia reveal new Lumia smartphone in the UK ad, teases 'more than your eyes can see' video

We’re still days away from Nokia’s London media event, but the comapny’s apparently got a real taste for teasers. A new 20-second promo clip aired today in the UK, and although it doesn’t outline any outright specs or model numbers, we we get a (very) up-close look at a dual-flash arrangement (unlike the xenon flash seen on Verizon’s Lumia 928), a glossy white shell and some metal detailing. We’re relieved that Nokia has something new to unveil in the UK next week, but we’re now itching hearing exactly how this Windows Phone will differ from the now-public Lumia 928. We’ll have all the details on Tuesday morning.

Update: The Verge has managed to upload a digital copy of the ad. See it for yourself right after the break.

Latest Nokia Lumia 928 teaser demonstrates OIS skills (video)

Latest Nokia Lumia 928 teaser demonstrates OIS skills

Nokia is continuing its trail of breadcrumbs to the official Lumia 928 launch, with today’s drop including this rendering of the phone in white and a video meant to show off its optical image stabilization chops. The phone pulls off some high quality video recording attached to a remote control helicopter flying through the forest, as it attempts to keep blur to a minimum. It also shows off a flash that, to our eyes, looks like the xenon bulb featured in the 808 PureView. There’s no comparison to other devices this time around, so you’ll just have to imagine what other phones could capture in similar circumstances (or, do the test yourself and send us the video — whatever works). Check out the demo after the break to see the results yourself, or hit the source link to sign up for more info.

Nokia pits Lumia 928 against Galaxy S III again, challenges Samsung to audio recording contest

Ready for round two? Nokia is: it’s put the Galaxy S III and its own Lumia 928 back in the ring, challenging Samsung’s handset to an audio recording duel. The company’s latest video tasks both phones with capturing a musical performance in a New York subway. Naturally, Nokia uses the clip to promote the Lumia’s strengths, flipping back and forth between the 928’s clear, undistorted audio, and the much noisier recording captured on the Galaxy S III.

A graphic overlay jumps and dips with the volume, peaking into the red distortion threshold whenever the view switches to the Samsung phone’s perspective. “Nokia Lumia retains audio quality under high volume recording with no distortion,” it reads, and indeed the Lumia’s footage does sound clearer by comparison, if a bit muted. What Nokia’s handset lacks in volume, however, it makes up in balance — not only is the audio free of distortion, it also lacks the echo picked up by the Galaxy S III. Even so, the test should be taken with a grain of salt — the proctor has an interest in the Lumia coming out on top, and the GSIII isn’t Samsung’s latest, exactly. Smartphone audiophiles with a discerning ear can find the full video after the break.

[Thanks, Emmett]

Nokia Teases Color-Focused Global Even On May 9

Nokia Teases Color Focused Global Even On May 9

With Nokia accidentally outing its Lumia 928 yesterday prior to its expected unveiling on May 14, we’re not sure what else the company has up its sleeves, but it has announced a global event that will take place this Thursday.

Nokia sent out an invite to its scheduled global event which was accompanied by an image of what looks to be an oval along with a yellow background and the message asking if customers are ready to “add some color to your week?” Nokia will be making its announcement in New Delhi at 12 p.m. local time, which is around 3 a.m. ET and 12 a.m. PT, which leads us to believe its “global announcement” will have something to do with the Indian market, but the company could certainly be teasing additional colors of an already released handset.

For those who will be awake at the time Nokia makes their announcement in New Delhi, you can watch the action live from the company’s Conversations page where a webcast can be viewed.

Nokia pits the Lumia 928 against the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III in low-light video shootout

Nokia pits the Lumia 928 against the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III in low-light video shootout

Now that the Lumia 928’s mere existence is official, Nokia’s posted a video comparing its footage-shooting chops against the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III in low-light conditions. The folks in Espoo also revealed that the handset will be toting an 8.7-megapixel camera, matching the Lumia 920. Naturally, the film showcases just what PureView tech, paired with a Carl Zeiss lens and proprietary OIS can do. After letting the 928’s footage do the talking for roughly 50 seconds, Elop and Co. turn to side-by-side comparison shots, pointing out better color saturation, sharper image focus and less noise. Head past the break to catch the shootout in its entirety, and get a sense of deja vu.

Nokia Max 4.7″ And Catwalk Lumia Smartphones Rumored

Nokia Max 4.7 And Catwalk Lumia Smartphones Rumored

These days a number of alleged Nokia Lumia smartphones and phablets are in the news. These include the EOS, the highlight of which will be a rumored 41 megapixel camera and the Lumia 920 successor ‘Catwalk,’ which will reportedly be fashioned out of aluminium. Today, Catwalk is in the news again, and so is a device we’ve never heard of before, the Nokia Max. This smartphone will be the cheapest LTE device on the market which will tout the biggest display size in the entire Lumia range.

The Nokia Max, a purported image of which is posted above, reportedly has a 4.7 inch 800×480 SuperSensitive LCD, a 1.2 GHz processor with 512MB of RAM, LTE and a 2,000 mAh battery. There’s no word on how much internal storage this device will have. The Nokia Max will end up with 6xx branding, its expected to be called the Nokia Lumia 625. It is expected that Nokia Catwalk smartphone will have internal specifications similar to that of the 920, though its camera will have enhanced OIS performance with an enhanced UI that offers both Smart and Pro mode for shooting. Reportedly, it will also be thinner and lighter than its predecessor, 50 grams and 2.3 millimeters to be precise, respectively. [Image via DoSpy]

Nokia Lumia 928 officially confirmed: PureView, OIS and Carl Zeiss camera goodies

Nokia Lumia 928 shows off PureView, OIS and CarlZeiss goodies in magazine spread

So, print is the new digital. At least when it comes to Verizon’s imminent — and now surely fully acknowledged — Lumia 928. The billboard spotted over the weekend enthused about the camera, but told us little else. This magazine spread spotted in Vanity Fair, however has a few more details. As hinted at, we can expect PureView goodness (though we’re guessing a-la 920, rather than the 808), plus a Carl Zeiss lens and Nokia’s proprietary OIS. As for the rest of the phone, well, that’s still largely under wraps, we’ll just have to wait until the next print run — or not.

Update: The Nokia link in the advert is now live, at least enough to show an official image.
