T-Mobile Announces Nokia Lumia 521 Again

T Mobile Announces Nokia Lumia 521 Again

T-Mobile already made the announcement of Lumia 521 at the MWC back in February, today’s press release is the second official confirmation we’ve received about this exclusive device. T-Mobile is partnering with Nokia to bring the Lumia 521 exclusively to its customers. This Lumia smartphone runs on Windows Phone 8, like all other smartphones in Nokia’s signature range. T-Mobile says that the Nokia Lumia 521 is a perfect, everyday smartphone that embodies a range of high end features at a very affordable price. The smartphone will run on T-Mobile’s nationwide 4G network.

The Nokia Lumia 521 has a 4-inch super sensitive touch screen display with a resolution of 800 x 480. It has a 5 megapixel camera on the back capable of 720p video recording. There’s 512MB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage with an option to increase externally via microSD card. Its just 9.9mm thick and is said to feel a bit cheaper than the high priced Lumia smartphones. Lumia 521 will be available in May from Walmart, T-Mobile Retail channels and Microsoft Retail Stores. T-Mobile says that exact pricing and availability details will be shared at a later date.

IRL: Moshi’s Digits gloves and the Nokia Lumia 620 on Telus

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we’re using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

Spring may have sprung two weeks ago, but believe us, it’s still winter somewhere. (Ed note: I’m typing this from underneath an NVIDIA Snuggie — Dana.) In fact, Darren’s had a reason to test out some touchscreen-friendly gloves, even in his southerly state of North Carolina. Up north, our own Jon Fingas has been playing with the Lumia 620 on Canada’s Telus networks. No complaints from him about the 40-degree temps, though.

Nokia’s Verizon-Bound Lumia 928 Spotted In Leaked Images Ahead Of Launch

nokia-lumia-928

It’s been a long time coming, but Verizon Wireless customers should soon have another high-end Windows Phone 8 device to lust after. After the handset was spotted both in both the FCC’s and Verizon’s systems, noted leaker @evleaks has come through yet again with a new image of the upcoming Nokia Lumia 928 (formerly known as the “Laser”).

There’s not a whole lot to be gleaned from the image save for the fact that the device seems to have done away with the rounded sides and flat top and bottom edges of its immediate predecessor the Lumia 920. As it turns out, one of the neatest potential features noted in early reports is nowhere to be found here — according to The Verge, the Lumia 928 will sport a more traditional polycarbonate body instead of the aluminum chassis that was originally slated for the device way back when. Most of the 928′s internals (think the 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage) are expected to remain the same as its cousin the 920, but Nokia may run with an OLED panel this time around rather than the IPS LCD as seen in the 920.

In short, it’s hard not to think of the Lumia 928 as what the Lumia 920 should’ve been when it launched.

According to recent figures from Kantar Worldpanel, Windows Phone has managed to pull away from BlackBerry in terms of mobile OS market share, and devices like the 928 should help Microsoft’s mobile efforts pick up a little more steam in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Nokia has been working to make its Windows Phones the most feature-rich out there with exclusivity agreements with companies like Zinio, so it’s clear that some developers are starting to see the benefits of embracing the prospect of developing for the Windows Phone platform.

That said, WP’s third place position isn’t completely safe at this point — BlackBerry posted some promising quarterly financials and if recent leaks are to be believed, a low-cost BlackBerry 10 device with a QWERTY keyboard could see the light very soon. Z10 shipments point to reasonably healthy demand, and an affordable device launched in key markets could be just what the doctor ordered for BlackBerry.

What Verizon’s Nokia Lumia 928 Will Probably Look Like

We’ve heard about the thinner, lighter and better variant of the Nokia Lumia 920 that Verizon is expected to get and now we get a look of what it’ll look like. Probably. The reliable leak happy @evleaks Twitter account has posted pictures of a black Lumia 928 and it looks great (it also looks like what you expect a Lumia to look like). More »

Nokia Lumia 928 for Verizon image surfaces

We’ve heard about the Nokia Lumia 928 off-and-on this year, reporting early in March that the handset had surfaced in Verizon’s inventory log, having been placed nearly two months earlier than that on January 17. A couple months later, it was tipped that the Lumia 928 would have an aluminum body and some other googies. Now an image of the handset has been posted by @evleaks.

Nokia Lumia 928 Verizon Leak

The image isn’t accompanied by much data, except that it is black, destined for Verizon, and will be available this year. According to information that surfaced in March, the Lumia 928, which is an upgraded Lumia 920, will have an aluminum body, a Xenon flash for the rear camera, and its new name. It’ll support 4G LTE, and will be available to Verizon subscribers.

According to that source, the handset was set to launch in April some time, meaning there’s a chance we could see it roll out this month. There’s said to be a “slightly curved back,” with the thinnest part measuring it at a svelte 10.2mm, making it smaller than the Lumia 920. It is also said that the device will have a more squared shape akin to the Lumia 720.

You can see in the image above that the handset is, indeed, rather square shaped, and you can also see the rounded edges on the rear shot. The image shows Verizon branding on the upper-right side of the device’s face. Aside from an 8-megapixel rear camera, there’s not much else currently known about the device, but while we wait for it to be unveiled, you can check out our Lumia 920 review to get an idea of what to expect.

Several troubled giants — HTC, BlackBerry, Nokia — are feeling a squeeze that may be hard to recover from.

Nokia Might Check out Solar Charging For Lumia Smartphones

Nokia Might Check out Solar Charging For Lumia SmartphonesThey say that a picture speaks a thousand words, so what happens when you check out an image of a Nokia Lumia handset that has the caption which goes, “Sun, sun, sun, here we come!” right under it? This particular quote might sound familiar to those who know all about George Harrison’s masterpiece “Here Comes the Sun,” although there has been some creative license attached to it that paves the way for such a change. Of course, you do not need to be a rocket scientist or a genius to figure out that Nokia could very well be working on some sort of solar charging capability with its Nokia Lumia range of Windows Phone handsets.

Remember early last year when Nokia actually laughed at the idea of relying on the sun as a potential energy source that is green, clean and affordable for smartphones? Sure, Nokia did have five prototypes to mull over the idea, whose performance of the handsets’ efficiency greatly depended on the geographical location where you are, but I guess the time is ripe at this moment to revisit the idea of solar charging capability for Lumia handsets. Surely those living in tropical countries would be able to appreciate such a move?

Nokia To Offer Software Updates For Lumia 920, Lumia 820, And Lumia 620

Nokia To Offer Software Updates For Lumia 920, Lumia 820, And Lumia 620If you so happen to be a loyal fan of the Finnish phone company Nokia, then chances are you are most probably rocking to a Windows Phone 8 device, or you could have fallen on hard times and are stuck with an older generation Windows Phone 7.5 device. Well, it would bode you well to perform an “upgrade” then by purchasing a newer handset, be it the Nokia Lumia 920, the Nokia Lumia 820, or even the more entry level Nokia Lumia 620. Why? Well, Nokia has just announced that they will be rolling out software updates for the above mentioned trio. It will not be a major update of sorts, but like what we believe, it would always be better if your smartphone had the latest firmware running on it, as that would (normally) make it run at its most efficient. Of course, there were times in the past where “duds” appeared, and the latest update had to be pulled back, but those moments are few and far in between.

Both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 will be on the receiving of an update to software version 1232.5957.1308.00xx, where it will include performance and stability enhancements, enhanced automatic display brightness adjustment, and better display stability during calls. The Lumia 620 that was recently launched will see its software version hit 1030.6407.1308.00xx, where it is touted to deliver system stability improvements, enhanced touch behavior, and camera picture quality fixes.

Nokia Lumia 928 tipped for Verizon with aluminum body

This week the folks at Verizon and Nokia appear to be closer than ever to releasing a Windows Phone 8 machine to beat the rest – an upgraded version of the Nokia Lumia 920 with 4G LTE. This new model will have 4G LTE as the AT&T version did, but with Verizon backing it up it’ll have a whole new aluminum body, Xenon flash for its back-facing camera, and a new name, as well. Welcome today – unofficially, for now – the Nokia Lumia 928.

sg_nokia_mwc2013_221-580x325

This tip comes from The Verge where they’ve got some sources familiar with Nokia’s plans. This tip also includes the notion that this smartphone will launch some time inside April and will be pushing up competition with the HTC One (not on Verizon quite yet) and the Samsung Galaxy S4 (to be revealed later this week). This machine will also be rolling out hard with an 8-megapixel camera not unlike the one included on the Lumia 920, PureView technology included.

Inside this device you’ll find a “slightly curved back” and a thinnest point at 10.2mm. This means you’ll be finding the Lumia 928 to be a lot less “bulky” than the 920 and, as it’s also been leaked, this device will be a lot more “squared”. In essence we’ll be seeing the power of the Nokia Lumia 920 in the body of the Lumia 720, another device we’ve just seen revealed this past month at Mobile World Congress 2013.

Have a peek at our hands-on with the Lumia 720 and be sure to kick back with our Nokia Lumia 920 review from a few months ago to get an idea of what’s coming to Verizon soon, and very soon. Meanwhile get pumped up about the rest of the top-tier offerings from Nokia and Verizon in our tag portals for each, and keep your eyes open for the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 for competition, too!
