Nokia Lumia 720 USA release imminent: FCC tapped

Today the Nokia Lumia 720 has been spotted running through the hoops at the FCC, this being one of the prerequisites for a USA release and a generally OK indicator that a launch here in the states is imminent. We got to take a peek at the Lumia 720 just a week ago at Mobile World Congress 2013 and found it to be a rather impressive machine – especially considering how inexpensive the company aims for it to be. We’re to understand that this device may be heated to AT&T first, with the other major carriers coming up quickly behind.

This device works with a lovely 4.3-inch back-lit color display with a 1GHz dual-core processor from Qualcomm and will be arriving in the states in a variety of colors. Though we’ve seen the device in just Blue and White, you’ll be seeing Black and possible Red coming in as well. And then there’s the case options – case options galore!

UPDATE: We’ve seen black as well – the colors are endless!

This stand was more of a whole experience in and of itself, complete with massive shows of the devices revealed that week – Nokia Lumia 520 as well as the smaller devices too! Have a peek at more of our MWC 2013 content right this minute to see the full run-down.

Nokia Lumia 720 swings by the FCC in high style

Nokia Lumia 720 swings by the FCC

Take a good look: this may be the closest most Americans get to the Nokia Lumia 720 without going through an importer. The fashion-focused Windows Phone has passed through the FCC’s approval and, as expected, doesn’t include the LTE that most US carriers would demand. The agency does throw a few bones, though. The smartphone’s full manual is on display, and there’s support for HSPA+ on AT&T’s frequencies for those who just have to get this slenderest of Lumias running on a local network. We’ll keep an eye out for a version with US-native LTE should Nokia ever have a change of heart, but those who can’t afford to wait can have a gander at the source link instead.

Nokia and Burton intro a snowboarding app to prep and record epic runs (video)

Nokia and Burton team on a snowboarding app to prep for and record epic runs video

We can’t say that there’s a huge cross-section of the market that both owns a Lumia phone and likes snowboarding enough to want an app dedicated to the sport, but Nokia will at least have that audience sewn up through an exclusive team-up with Burton. Their newly publicized Windows Phone 8-only release lets hill carvers prepare for every stage of their trip, from shopping for gear and getting the local slope forecast through to that all-important motivational music playlist. Those who can’t brave the descent can still create a sequenced photo from video taken at the sidelines, or stream Burton’s Open Events from the safety of home. Anyone as likely to do a frontside 180 as carry a Lumia 620 can hit the source link or video below to get a peek — preferably before the grass peeks out from the hillside.

Nokia Lumia 928 spotted in Verizon Wireless’s inventory

Those of you on contract with Verizon Wireless may be excited to hear that the Nokia Lumia 928 has been spotted on Verizon’s inventory log. The Lumia 928 has actually been placed there way back in January 17th, and it should be coming out sometime in the near future. Verizon’s customers have been waiting anxiously for the Nokia Lumia 920 to make it to their carrier ever since it launched on AT&T’s network, and while there is the Nokia Lumia 822 on Verizon’s Network, it doesn’t have the same aesthetic appeal as the Lumia 920.

Both Verizon Wireless and Microsoft are said to be doing extra marketing for the Nokia Lumia 928. Verizon Wireless will be marketing the Lumia 928 alongside its other flagship smartphones, including the iPhone 5 and the HTC DROID DNA. Other than commercials, Microsoft will most likely also implement the Nokia Lumia 928 in various product placements throughout popular TV shows. Currently the HTC 8X has been receiving massive product placement in various shows, and it looks like it may be replaced soon.

The Nokia Lumia 928 has been confirmed to have the same display resolution as the Nokia Lumia 920, both utilizing a 1280 x 768 resolution display. There is also speculation that the device will look different compared to the Lumia 920 on AT&T’s network. The Lumia 928 should, however, still feature the same polycarbonate exterior as the Lumia 920, and should be available in various colors.

While the photo does confirm that the device is headed straight to Verizon Wireless, and soon, it doesn’t confirm an actual release date. On a side note, Nokia is also speculated to be releasing a new smartphone sometime in the future that utilizes a 41MP Pureview camera sensor. The device is speculated to be released on both AT&T and Verizon Wireless’s networks.

Nokia Lumia 928 possibly seen in Verizon’s system, spoils few surprises

Nokia Lumia 928 possibly seen in Verizon's system, doesn't reveal much more

We know that Verizon is adding at least one more Nokia Lumia to its stable in the near future. However, there’s been little in tangible evidence to suggest just what’s coming to the carrier’s Windows Phone line. A purported leak to Phone Arena from Verizon’s internal product listings could help fill in that picture. It mentions a Lumia 928, and not much else — but Nokia’s naming customs immediately suggest that this will be Big Red’s rumored variant of the Lumia 920, which is currently limited to AT&T in the US. The device isn’t necessarily connected to the RM-860 we saw at the FCC, although it does support murmurs that Verizon wants at least some kind of improvement over the strictly middling Lumia 822. If the 928 is real, we’re mostly left wondering whether or not it will come quickly enough to remain relevant.

Nokia To Go Downmarket At MWC To Better Compete With Huawei And ZTE, Report Says

Nokia 206

Windows Phone 8 is Nokia’s big play for the future, but as a result of focusing on those devices and their higher-end target market, the company is giving up ground to firms like Huawei and ZTE with lower end devices. But the Finnish company may be looking to get its budget-friendly groove back with the introduction of new, basic handsets not based on Microsoft’s mobile OS, to be unveiled at MWC next week according to Reuters.

The tails of new models come from “company sources,” according to Reuters, and suggest Nokia will introduce “cut-price” hardware in multiple handsets, as well as a single new Lumia device on Windows Phone 8, but one designed with affordability in mind. Nokia already offers the budget Lumia 620, a $249 smartphone with Microsoft’s latest OS onboard, but that’s still over $200, whereas the average selling price of Nokia mobile phones in general was € 31 in 2012, Reuters notes, with net sales of mobile phones accounting for € 9.44 billion in sales in 2012 for the company.

Nokia has had tremendous success with its Series 40 line of devices, as Natasha noted in an article late last year, but even that market where it has traditionally been strong is under attack from rival manufacturers. Nokia is failing to attract audiences in its traditionally strong markets with even low-cost Lumia handsets. And it’s losing share fast to Huawei and ZTE, which are quickly charging up the ranks of global handset manufacturers thanks to an emphatic focus on lower end devices.

Nokia’s candle is burning at both ends, with the company facing threats in both smartphones and with low-end devices. The company said to “expect a lot of things” in 2013 based on the Series 40 platform at the end of 2012, and it looks likely we’ll see some of those things unveiled at MWC. A revamped Series 4 line could definitely help shore up its shrinking share of the under $100 market, and if a new Lumia can break the $200 barrier, we might see Nokia win back some precious smartphone share as well.

Nokia Music+ now live for US Lumia owners

Nokia Music now live for US Lumia owners

After launching the service across the pond just a few short days ago, Nokia’s now ready to make Music+ available for the US — confirming to us today its availability on Yankee soil. To recap, the paid subscription service ramps up the free app’s offerings with higher quality audio, unlimited offline downloads and Mix Radio skips, multiple device use, as well as lyrics — all for $4/mo. It’s a significantly cheaper alternative to other freemium music streaming services currently available in the Windows Phone 8 ecosystem. So, if you’ve recently gone Lumia, you might want to check it out.
